Occupy Wall Street Demonstrations Destroy Jobs for New York Cafe Workers

Posted on | December 14, 2011 | 14 Comments

Waiters, cooks, dishwashers, busboys — they’re the 99% whose economic interests the protesters never gave a damn about:

Milk Street Cafe, the restaurant whose business dried up in the face of the Occupy Wall Street barricades, is shutting down. . . .
Milk Street Cafe’s closure will result in the layoff of 70 workers. That’s on top of the 21 let go in October.

91 jobs lost thanks to Occupy Wall Street,” says Jeff Quinton of the Quinton Report, who got his first Instalanche today.

Maybe that’s not quite as big as being named Time‘s “Person of the Year,” but a blogger never forgets his first Instalanche.

Nice try, but there’s another, more informative, version of the story:

The Milk Street Cafe will close its doors for good on Thursday, after struggling for months with a loss of business due to police barricades that appeared on Wall Street during the protests this fall.

The international kosher food hall at 40 Wall St. saw its sales plummet by 30 percent after the Occupy Wall Street protests started in September, largely because of the metal barricades the NYPD used to cordon off large sections of the street and sidewalk, the owner said.

Even after the protesters were evicted from Zuccotti Park, many of the barricades on Wall Street remained in place …

Your version is like blaming the ash problem around Treblinka on those damn Jews.

Where is common sense?  Why would they do something like that when they know a business will suffer?  If I were the owner, I would have raised hell about it before I’d let my business fail.

    Rosalie,

We’re talking about New York here.

The barricades were almost certainly arranged so as to reward the businesses who grease the correct NYPD palms on a regular basis, and to punish / make an example of / send a message to those who don’t.

While your supposition is possible I would presume indifference.

The police didn’t put up the barricades for nothing.  The situation was created by the protestors who disrupted the neighborhood (which wasn’t even Wall Street).

In your anarchist world, I suppose the protestors would do as they pleased until homeowners and business owners in the area took up arms and cleared them out, right?

Which the homeowners and business owners should be able to do. When you have city officials putting up with these scumbags and giving them various levels of support, its going to get to that point eventually. Hopefully when it happens they’ll run the officials asses out as well, just like those Chinese villagers run those other commies out of their town.

I’m with knappster on this one.  “A former employee who worked at Milk Street Cafe … who left prior to the protesters setting up
camp, had noted upon resignation back in September the eatery likely
    “wouldn’t last past Christmas.”
