Debbie’s Very Bad Day in Iowa

Posted on | August 22, 2011 | 44 Comments

During my Iowa trip, I got lots of photos and videos I wasn’t able to upload at the time due to connectivity issues and the very hectic schedule. One of the items that never made it to the blog was an incident at the Iowa State Fair where DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz got heckled offstage by an angry liberal. I was able to phone in a report to The American Spectator, but never got around to uploading video of the incident.

The video is about two minutes, and at about the 40-second mark, you see Wasserman-Schultz say, “The difference between Barack Obama and congressional Democrats and all the Republican presidential candidates is that all of them committed to end Medicare as we know it . . . and privatize Social Security.” This elicits a predictable chorus of boos from her Democratic audience, but it also inspired the angry liberal heckler – you’ll see him in a yellow T-shirt — to start yelling that the debt deal “put Medicare on the chopping block!” He also yells: “Stop caving in to Wall Street!” Watch:

As you see, at the 1:15 mark, Democrat loyalists try to shout down the heckler by chanting, “Debbie! Debbie!” But at the 1:30 mark, Yellow Shirt starts heckling again, which prompts Wasserman-Schultz to cut straight to her peroration – something about the great “victory” that awaits in 2012 – and end her speech well before her allotted 15 minutes were up.

Following her offstage in hope that she would hold a brief press conference, I then caught the denouement as other angry liberals – the first one wearing a “Catholic Worker” T-shirt – interrogated her about the same basic issue. Wasserman-Schultz evidently knew this guy, addressing him as “David.”

The exchange was interrupted periodically by the congresswoman’s entourage, but as much as was audible went like this:

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ:  “As someone who represents a district in South Florida, there’s nobody who fights harder to protect Medicare . . .”

FIRST LIBERAL: “You voted for the debt-ceiling bill . . . . Why don’t you have five minutes to sit down and talk?”

ENTOURAGE WOMAN:  “Because, David, it’s not built in. Don’t act like this is — you know how . . .”

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ:  “I’m happy to talk to you . . .”

FIRST LIBERAL: “You talk the talk, but your actions don’t back up the talk.”

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ:  “Oh, you know, with all due respect . . .”

FIRST LIBERAL: “Obama was the one that put cuts to Social Security and Medicare on the table.”

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ:  “That is simply not true and you know it and that is an unacceptable …”

SECOND LIBERAL: “He said everything was on the table.”

FIRST LIBERAL: “And you voted for the debt-ceiling bill, Debbie – you voted for that bill.”

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ:  “Because we needed to come together to address our deficit …”

SECOND LIBERAL: “Why is it always Democrats compromising with other Democrats?”

WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: “Call me, David. We’ll talk later.”

It was a very enlightening glimpse at how a powerful Democrat – herself a leader of “progressives” in Congress – cannot satisfy the implacable demands of her own party’s left-wingers. Just something to keep in mind, next time someone tries to tell you that Republicans are the party beholden to fringe extremist wingnuts.

UPDATE: Welcome, Instapundit readers!

And Ed Driscoll readers, too! (I’m sure the Trotsky reference was a just a coincidence, comrade.)

UPDATE II: Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s Left-Wing Iowa Antagonist ID’d as David Goodner.

“All due respect” to DWS would, I suspect, involve a hefty wad of phlegm.

I would have thought the abhorrent Debbie Wasserman-Schultz makes for an awful spokesperson for the Democratic Party, but never in a million years would I have imagined the reason was she isn’t lunatic-left enough.

I’m getting the idea that Democrats don’t understand Ponzi schemes; they call them safety nets and social justice and economic stimuli. Ignorance is curable but leftist stupidity is forever.

Which extremist view do you refer? That spending money you don’t have isn’t sustainable?  That  the Constitution should mean something?  That raising taxes ALWAYS results in additional spending, not deficit reduction?  This is extremist to you.  That says a lot.

“Call me, David.  We’ll talk later” is an attempt to satisfy the fringe element, not brush them off.  Unless you think Wasserman-Schultz is just brushing off a nutcase…..who she knows well enough to remember his first name.  And he has her number.

Projection is most unbecoming of anyone, but especially a sincere leftie such as yourself.

Yeah, she is trying to “placate” the extremists with mere soothing words (and they ain’t working) unlike the republicans who are  placating their own with actual deeds; iow, when the fringe is happy there is no actual need to “placate” them.  The fringe has won when they become “mainstream”. The victory is almost complete on the right, no way near on the left as the current example clearly illustrates.

No sane person with a nodding acquaintance with math – they don’t have to be good at it, just know enough to acknowledge it exists – can believe Medicare can survive without a drastic restructuring.

Social Security might be saved in something close to its present form by increasing retirement ages, cutting supplemental payments, means testing, and a bout of inflation every 20 years (after revising the CPI formula).  Gradual privatizing would still be better for everybody, but that is probably a lost opportunity after market volatility in recent years.

At some point the Baby Boomers do start dying off, so if the system can be rigged to make it that far . . . but not Medicare.  Costs are out of control and the system is already underwater.  Medicaid must feel the knife too, but that will probably be postponed until after a real recovery is well under way to minimize the effect.

These are serious issues, and somehow I just can’t see Debbie offering any productive input on a serious issue.

Heck, I wouldn’t even trust her judgment on hair and make-up.

Anamika – WHEN did it become ‘fringe’ – when did it become ‘right wing’ – when did it become ‘evil/extremist/something to be derided’ to believe that our elected officials would  be fiscally responsible? To keep spending under control?

Or, to put it another way – when did it become OK to spend $150 for every $100 you take in?

You may not realize it, but you are actually smearing Democrats.

Why do you think that people have no right to expect good management from the people they send to Washington?

Your way of thinking is bankrupting California, it is bankrupting this entire nation. I don’t know how you sleep at night.

Perry is right – you people are treasonous.

The politicians don’t care. Their golden parachutes are packed and their pockets lined. Their perks are protected and they need not mingle too much with the riffraff if they don’t want to. It is all play money to them and play days for them. The rest of us are just the mules that pull the cart.

Your argument is flawed as it presumes that ‘far left extremists’ are socio-politically equivalent to ‘far right extremists’.

The ‘far right extremists’ advocate smaller government that adheres strictly to the Constitution and founding principles such that the people once again have levels of individual liberty and freedom the nation was founded upon at the cost of what some see as the ‘good’ that can be accomplished by big government.

The ‘far left extremists’ advocate much larger, much more controlling government that manages, owns and/or regulates more or even most of the people’s economic activities and redirects/redistributes the earnings from those activities at the cost of less individual freedom and liberty for the average American. The Left generally want the government to be society’s ultimate source and decider of a person’s socio-economic rights (both as an individual and assembled with others as a business) to ensure equality of outcomes for politically-defined groups deemed ‘correct’ and/or ‘preferred’ at the cost of groups of people who are deemed politically incorrect or less deserving of government largesse and favors.

If one truly believes in the values that formed the foundation of this nation, then paying attention to the founders wisdom would then be mandatory:

Thomas Jefferson said: “The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits.”;  and: “Most bad government has grown out of too much government.”

A nation that is based on individual freedom and liberty is not ever going to be a collectivst’s idea of secular-heaven on earth – unless, by choice and/or deception, it devolves into tryanny of the soft or hard variety.
