Who’s fired up? Rick Santorum’s fired up!

Some headlines from Friday. ABC News:

Rick Santorum Nabs Big Iowa Endorsement
JOHNSTON, Iowa – Rick Santorum got his biggest endorsement yet at a small hotel here: Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz.
Calling it the “best day of the campaign,” he said he is “committed to Iowa” and the campaign is beginning to “pick up that critical momentum,” despite his low poll numbers. “People have asked me, ‘Why haven’t you started to catch on?’ And I say, ‘Well you haven’t been in Iowa for the last week or so because we are definitely picking up momentum in the state of Iowa and across this country.’ We feel it coming,” Santorum told a crowd of more than 50 people at the Stoney Creek Inn here. . . .

CNN:

Santorum predicts last-minute surge
. . . During his introduction of Schultz, Santorum lamented that Iowans “take their time to make these decisions,” but he was optimistic in his predictions for the coming weeks.
“We think the timing is going to be just perfect for us to be able to catch that wave at the right time as people start to make their decisions,” Santorum said. . . .

Politico:

Rick Santorum’s Iowa endorser:
‘I tend to like the underdog’

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz became the first Republican statewide officeholder here to endorse a candidate in the presidential primary.
“I tend to like the underdog,” said Shultz, who won his own come-from-behind campaign in 2010, on Friday. “And slow and steady wins the race.”

Des Moines Register:

Iowa Secretary of State endorses
Santorum in GOP presidential race

. . . Schultz said he is asking Iowa GOP members to give Santorum a second look in the Jan. 3 Iowa Caucuses. He said he had been wooed by other Republican candidates, but felt the Pennsylvanian was the best person to put in the White House. He described Santorum as a strong voice for the pro-life movement who had fought for welfare reform and other conservative causes.

Santorum is certainly getting his momentum at the right time.

But the idea I’ve seen on here that he could finish third and ride the wave of excitement is just fantasy.  Third would be a noteworthy achievement, but not enough to trigger the sudden fountain of money and volunteers he’d need.

He has little or no organization in the other states, some good people but not nearly enough to be competitive.  Third in Iowa gets him polite applause, our thanks for playing, and some lovely parting gifts (including the Home Version of our game!).

Second place is better, maybe still not enough.  Second to Newt probably wouldn’t be, since he’s already staked out the frontrunner/Not Romney position.  But if he finishes second to Mitt, it could move him up in the pecking order, especially if Gingrich is well back in the field – a real possibility since he has no significant ground game in Iowa.

Naturally, a win shakes up the race completely and dominates the news for days.

For me…it’s Ron Paul than Rick Perry, Rick Santorum. If they all drop out of the race…it is a long dark road to election day.

Donald Trump may cancel debate that only Santorum and Gingrich are going to show for, may run as an indie to help Obama win.  http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/donald-trump-canceling-gop-debate-set-host-article-1.989150

Yeah, we should trust the short fingered vulgarian with the bad comb over.

What matters most isn’t the pecking order he falls in at but the percentage of his votes. If he finishes a strong third, or even a strong fourth for that matter, it could help him, provided the winner is no more than five or six percentage points ahead of him and he were to get say twenty percent, or close to it. Not that I think that’s going to happen, mind you, just saying. Similarly, a strong showing would help Bachmann even more, as she is building an organization in South Carolina that could capitalize on a strong showing in Iowa.

But I don’t think that’s going to happen either, unfortunately. I used to tell people to get ready to make their choice between Mitt and Newt. Now I’m telling you, get ready to settle for Newt.

Obviously a win would be giantic for Team Rick (which right now is mostly his family).  Second would also be huge for Santorum.  That means he topped either Newt or Romney.  Third would be too little too late.

Oh, yeah? Well, Mitt Romney is ‘fauxred up’, a precisely placed placebo emotion that should be enough for you bitter, cling-on Proles.

I thought it was “fat-fingered vulgarian.” From the old Spy magazine, right?

Even his old family photos look staged. I bet before they were taken he said “okay now everybody let’s smile and act like we enjoy each others company.

To credibly refer to Santorum’s “momentum,” you should have…evidence of Santorum’s momentum.

The guy’s been around for something like a year or more, and has campaigned in all 99 counties, so Iowans certainly know who he is.  And Iowa is disproportionately religious/social conservative (particularly as compared to, e.g., New Hampshire), the very group that Santorum is targeting.  And yet Santorum is polling the lowest of all the candidates, with the exception of Huntsman (and Gary Johnson, on the few polls that include him.)

    Santorum is getting around 5%.

    Short fingered.

Yes it is from Spy.  Trump hated that magazine.  Carter and Anderson are liberals, but they loved making fun of the Clintons and Trump.

If Team Rick had two more weeks, things would be a lot more certain for him.  The question….can he surge in time for Gingrich’s Flava of Da Month appeal to fade under the relentless assault aimed at the Really Smart Sorta Conservative Intellectual?
