Professor Herf Gets It Right

Posted on | April 12, 2014 | 15 Comments

Earlier this week, we noted Brandeis University’s cowardly surrender to the forces of political correctness (or perhaps, creeping Sharia). The president of Brandeis gets an earful from Jeffrey Herf, a University of Maryland history professor with a Ph.D. from Brandeis:

That the president of a university founded by Jews in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust should have rescinded an honor to a woman who has had the courage to attack the most important source of Jew-hatred in the world today is a disgraceful act and a failure of leadership. Instead of appeasing intolerance in your faculty, you should have taken this moment to reaffirm the values for which Brandeis has stood for so long and reconfirm the place of universities as models of tolerance and enlightenment in our troubled society.

Read the whole thing. If Brandeis University will not stand up against the forces of cultural jihad, who will?

Well, Jews aren’t exactly helping their public image in this country when the likes of Steve Cohen are running around viciously attacking our sacred Bill of Rights and Christians – at the same time!

Sunlight is the best disinfectant, someone once said.

It is a disgrace, but disgraceful conduct is the default for today’s university faculties and presidents. Major universities fight to help keep the climate fraudsters’ emails out of public view. The Duke “88” professors took out a full page newspaper ad basically saying their lacrosse team was guilty of the phony charges from a prostitute (and no, she wasn’t just a “stripper,” you’re a stripper if you work at a strip club, if you go to a house full of young men to strip, you’re a whore), to date none has yet apologized.

The anti-American Left has taken over the academy. All we can do is defund them. Get the federal government out of higher education altogether, no direct or indirect subsidies, no guarantees of student loans. Then if Brandeis and Duke and Penn State and U.Va. want to behave like communist enclaves, they can still do it – but on their own dime, not the taxpayers’.

I haven’t read Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s books, but have heard many of her interviews. She has a strong and courageous voice telling an important story to be heard. Who wouldn’t be anti-Islam with what she experienced?

    But to be clear,

Muhammad, with his many wives and daughters
did not in any way model that kind of treatment
    of women.
He sought to improve the lives and well-being
of women, not to abuse them.
He was married monogomously for 25 years to a
woman whom he adored and respected. She was his
best friend and most trusted confidant.
When she passed, and he had finally arrived in
Medina he began taking multiple wives mostly
women who needed to be cared for due to the
death of one of his supporters. He also married
for political reasons — as a way to create alliances,
which was common during that time.
His youngest and most controversial bride was very
young when he married, and she is what anti-islam
    writers bring up most often.
But if you hear the whole story of that marriage,
hear how, since she was born, he was an important
part of her life (her father was close to Muhammed)
    — how she adored him, and how sweet and kind he
was to her — and hear about her important contributions
    to early Islam — and how he died in her arms;
it’s easy to regard that marriage as fated, in a very

beautiful way – as hard as it is for the western
    culture to accept.

Clearly, extremists cultures who misuse women
are not following the example of Muhammad’s life.
They have twisted and hijacked ideas to justify
    their own twisted desires.
In that respect, there’s nothing new.

Because there is nothing weird with a 54 year old man having sex with a nine year old child wife.

To that I’ll add: A psychologically intact adult knows that sex is an adult activity — sexual attraction to children is a type of mental illness imo. Even on the most basic “animal” level, the requisite sensory cues are simply not there — when humans are healthy, they are “wired” to protect and nurture children, not to use them as gratification appliances.

Now then. Someone who has never read any scholarly biographical history of Mohammed could read the those comments (including mine) and assume that what is described above is an accurate historical depiction of the relationship between Mohammed
    and his child bride.

What they wouldn’t know is that Aisha, the wife married at a very early age, would never have considered herself as
an “appliance” for the Prophet’s gratification. All reliable accounts suggest an entirely different kind of relationship.

She is fondly referred to by many Muslims as the “Mother of Believers.” Considered to be the favorite wife of Mohammed (after Khadija’s passing
    — who was truly a partner to him in every way), Aisha was one of the first Muslim scholars responsible for the earliest historical narrations of the Prophet’s life and teachings. She was clearly devoted to him, and he to her. There is nothing whatsoever to be found in any historical
account to even remotely suggest that she displayed any evidence at all off of being the victim of a mentally ill sociopath.

Before Mohammed become ‘the Prophet’ he was considered a man of the highest integrity, whose judgment and advice was often sought. He was so well respected he was intrusted at a surprisingly young age by his first wife
(that’s how they met) to conduct business on her behalf. (Custom forbid a woman do it, and as a wealthy woman, she had to find the ‘truest’ man around.) But this information is not very sexy, I know. And it doesn’t help to promote further prejudice and hostility based on half-truths and misinformation.

So a 54 year old man can have sex with a 9 year old girl and still be a man of the highest integrity?

    You can see this:

The truth about Muhammad and Aisha Innocence of Muslims repeated the claim Muhammad was a paedophile, but the story is more complex and interesting than that

If that’s not something that made you to at least think about…

Only fair to have Ayaan Hirsi Ali the last word here on the subject, no?

“It’s worth discovering Muhammad through Deepak Chopra.” —Ayaan Hirsi Ali

I have not read Deepak’s book but I was surprised at this comment of her’s given the undoubted fact of her very courageous and implacable stance on Islam.

So in the end, you justify sex between a 9 year old and a 54 year old man because it was consensual. And radical Islam would kill Ayaan Hirsi Ali as a heretic (and probably Deepak too). And Brandeis U would wring its hands then look the other way.

    Interesting indeed. Revealing too.

From what i gather Ayaan is an atheist. Maybe Ayaan was endorsing Deepak’s “humanizing of Muhammed” …. I do not know the source of her comments and all I have been able to find are those seven words, supposedly from her. I would be interested to know the context in which she presumably endorsed his book.
