Barbara Espinosa’s Gingrich Files

Longtime readers of the blog will warmly remember Barbara Espinosa, whom I first met at Right Online 2009 in Pittsburgh (“Grandma Is an Angry Mob,” American Spectator, Sept. 18, 2009). Barbara doesn’t like it when I remind people that she’s a grandmother and a widow. She thinks those descriptions might discourage romantic overtures from the kind of virile suitors she prefers. So …

The Hot-Blooded Buxom Babe of Arizona™ was also angry at me for several months this year because, while I was on the Cain Train before switching to the Santorum Express, Barbara was riding the Rick Perry Bandwagon. She’s a native Texan, after all, and her patriotic allegiance to the Lone Star Republic was expressed in enthusiastic admiration for the handsome fellow from Paint Creek, Texas, who — if he were not married — might be the kind of virile suitor Barbara prefers.

Well, when the Smilin’ Texan said adios, he endorsed Newt Gingrich, but Barbara’s enthusiastic admiration is not quite so easily transferred. Newt is definitely not the kind of virile suitor Barbara prefers, and she has applied her online research skills to begin compiling a dossier on Gingrich, which you might want to check out.

I point this out because of Erick Erickson’s claim that all Republican opposition to Gingrich is coming from Beltway establishment elites who support Mitt Romney. But Barbara is about as grassroots as you can get in the conservative movement, and is not at all shy about sharing her thoroughgoing contempt for Newt.

There are other things Barbara is not shy about sharing — that is, if you’re the kind of virile suitor she prefers.

When I first met her in Pittsburgh, I had my handsome teenage son James with me, and within an hour of our meeting, Barbara asked me if I would mind having her as my daughter-in-law.

She’s a firecracker, that Barbara.

I point this out because of Erick Erickson’s claim that all Republican opposition to Gingrich is coming from Beltway establishment elites who support Mitt Romney.

I don’t think that’s a fair summary of Erick’s point. It’s roughly akin to saying that all of Santorum’s support is coming from SoCons that want to turn the US into a theocracy (which some silly Leftists actually believe).

I call that smart-to not trust politicians; I don’t call keeping a dossier on someone whom you supposedly support very supportive. She wants to do the Democrats work for them if he becomes the nominee? Sounds like a lot of people who claim conservatism want to do that. As long as it isn’t their candidate they’re happy to do a takedown. The circular firing squad does no favors to anyone running against Obama, but then I REALLY don’t want to see Obama back in office.

Actually, that sentiment is all over the righty blogs like Hotair, Rightscoop and others … that Santorum only cares about social issues. Just read any comment section.

Erickson’s bubble has burst – he just doesn’t know it yet.

Barbara’s dossier isn’t what we need right now, though. All the information is out there on Gingrich already. Those of us who lived through the period of his rise and fall should well remember why we gave Newt the boot. But somehow those who support him are willing to ignore all the reasons he could never be on a winning national ticket. They close their eyes, put fingers in their ears, and repeat “I can’t hear you neener neener neener” whenever Newt’s actual record comes up.

Their ranks include a number of intelligent and educated people, and experienced observers, all of whom should know better. We have seen this cultist behavior repeatedly in this campaign cycle. Discount Paul because his followers were acting this way years ago already. But up until Palin formally announced she wasn’t running, there were people who insisted she would and who treated the slightest perceived lack of enthusiasm in crowning her as a below-the-belt attack, and responded accordingly.

Similarly, when Cain had his own boomlet a cult-like cadre formed among his supporters, too. Question “999” and get attacked. Point out the weaknesses and get attacked. Point out in Cain’s own plan it was only a transition to a “Fair Tax” plan, and get attacked. Mention his utter lack of preparation on a wide range of issues or complete lack of seriousness as a candidate opposed to an author-on-a-book-tour, get attacked. Of course all his accusers were nut ‘n’ sluts out for a buck.

Perry’s crowd was just as bad, led by Erickson and his sycophantic lizard crew. No criticism could be valid, no critic left standing. They were even calculating paths to the nomination if he finished fifth in SC, that’s how delusional they were about it.

I suspect those who are now coalescing around Gingrich include many who were on one of the other Kool-Aid trains previously. It’s akin to mass hysteria. Any con man will tell you his biggest edge is his mark’s desire to believe in whatever nostrum he is selling.

Gingrich is absolutely the worst candidate we could put up. Pawlenty, Cain, Bachmann, Johnson, or Roemer would all do at least as well in the Electoral College with less damage to the down-tickets, as would any of the other three still onstage. The man is toxic, 20% approval with over 90% name recognition.

America knows Newt. America hates Newt. WHY does America hate Newt? Because America knows Newt.

Wake up and smell the coffee, people!

No, because what America cannot endure is another four years of Obama, and nominating Gingrich is the most likely path to that happening.

It’s possible the economy will doom Obama against any Republican, but not assured.

We could put up Ron Paul and not lose as many Senate and House races. Newt will awaken the disillusioned on the left to 2008-level states of excitation.

Dude I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but every single thing we’re dinging Gingrich on is a matter of public record drawn from public sources and has been since the 90’s. It’s not like we’re crawling through credit card slips in the Library of Congress with ominous music playing.

Funny you never hear them mention running Palin. It’s always somebody who’s an elitist, a RINO, or an out-and-out liberal like Christie.

Yeah, liberals are fine, but the Grand Old Party of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan just can’t bring themselves to try to promote somebody who is actually a constitutional conservative.

So what the fuck is it they stand for, exactly?

Byron York makes a pretty good case that Newt was “Palinized” before Palin: Hold the target to ethical standards no one can meet, bombard them with complaints, and hope something sticks or the costs get too high and they quit.

Of course, another thing they have in common is how eager Establicans (aka Mitt supporters this time around) are to help. No one turns down giving the scorpion a ride, for some reason.

That’s bullshit, Barb. If the Dems, like Pelosi for example, had any kind of legitimate info, they would do one of two things. They would either release it now and let the chips fall where they may, or they would sit tight on it and release it after Newt got the nomination. If they chose the latter course, they wouldn’t open their mouths about until he got the nomination. They wouldn’t drop little hints about it like they’re doing now, obviously hoping we won’t nominate him.

That was a damn good article by York. Everybody should read it, especially Newt’s detractors on this site and other Republican voters who have reservations about him. We all like to bitch about the RINOs and the Establishment GOP, but far too often we still cringe when they crack the whip.
