What the Liberal Media Don’t Want Americans to Know About Contraception

Posted on | February 18, 2012 | 8 Comments

The debate over ObamaCare’s mandated coverage for contraception raged for days before I finally managed to weigh in Wednesday, pointing out the absurd distortions and disinformation being promoted by liberals. Of course, I’m a Sexist Theocratic Right-Wing Misogynistic Patriarchal Oppressor, so no one believes a word I say on the subject.

Therefore it is helpful that Alexa Shrugged (who is a woman) has decided to help fight back with two important posts on the subject:

Part 1: Controlling the Birth Control Debate
First the Planned Parenthood-Komen kerfuffle, now contraception? Who would have thought 1 year ago that we would be battling the culture wars again 9 months before a presidential election when the economy’s in the tank. Well, maybe Obama. And that’s the point.

Part 2: Debunking the Myth that
99% of Women Are Using Birth Control

There’s a meme going around in the media that 99% of women are on birth control. First of all, if this is true, clearly there is no crisis of accessibility or cost — 99% is as universal for coverage as you’ll ever get. And if 99% of women already have a way of getting or paying for birth control, then why in the world do we need to make it free through an Obamacare mandate?? But anyway, we need to examine this 99% stat.

You can and should follow her on Twitter.

You wanted to look at that 99% statistic.  Here’s some info for you on it: http://www.stinque.com/2012/02/14/rhythm-methodology/

First, I have to totally agree that the idea that the government should mandate anything at all regarding birth control is idiotic and statist.

However, I heard Limbaugh going on and on about this yesterday, complaining that the left is trying to say that the GOP wants to ban birth control, and that this is moronic because no one is talking about banning birth control.  The left is saying this, that much is true.  However, the fact is that every single GOP candidate (and Santorum in the lead on this) agrees that “Life begins at conception.”

Laws passed that state that fetuses have full rights from the moment of conception not only ban what people “traditionally” think of as abortion (including Plan B) but also would outlaw all hormonal birth control (The pill, the vaginal ring, the hormonal IUD, shots, implants, patches, etc) and all IUDs (non-hormonal.)  So in effect, the idea that many in the GOP are endorsing the banning of contraception is (partially) true.  Even “libertarian” Ron Paul supports this.

So while the flap about the Obamacare mandate is indeed legitimate and I agree that NO ONE should pay for anyone else’s birth control, the new meme about the GOP opposing contraception is about 80% accurate.

I guess at least Santorum is honest in saying that he personally opposes birth control, although I believe, based on the passage of these types of “personhood” legislation, that he is disingenuous about not wanting to “impose” this by legislation on the rest of us who 100% disagree.

Unfortunately, in our current society, arguments are not accepted on their merits alone; it is necessary for the arguer to have certain demographic “credentials.” Although I hate this state of affairs, as long as it continues it is important that we conservative women, minorities, etc., speak up to further the message of conservatism. Thanks, Alexa. I also tried to do my bit to counter the hysteria over Santorum wanting to sneak into America’s bedrooms and steal your Pill pack. We’ve got to speak up because a large part of the country won’t take the argument seriously coming from a man.

polypolitical-  you are assuming a far-left mindset to Santorum that he doesn’t have.  Catholics believe that God “does not do violence to the creature” in bringing His people to Salvation.  We are to try to persuade people we are right, not use the heavy hand of the law in Force.

    Susan,
You are assuming that the desire to coerce the American people through the power of government is a “far left” position; it is not. It is a Statist position, and Santorum is a Statist Conservative the same way that Obama is a Statist Socialist. I agree that Santorum would be less detrimental to the country than Obama is, because he might spend a tiny bit less money than Obama will and will probably deregulate some portions of the economy to help economic growth.

On the other hand, he seems to have no qualms about using the power of government to try to throw the breaks on whatever evolution of social mores that he dislikes. The op-ed I just read on his website titled “We Hold These Truths” is a good example. While I agree with his point that (in a nutshell) Obama is a total weasel on social issues, when he states that, “…That’s the special work of marriage in law – to connect things that otherwise fray and fragment: love, life, money, moms, and dads.” he is totally wrong. This is a basic example of the type of “conservative” social engineering that Santorum wants to to do: he believes that marriage cannot survive without government encouragement, incentives and protection. If he is right that marriage is self-evidently the best thing in the world and solely the realm of heterosexuals, then it should succeed without government interference or incentives.

Santorum voted for No Child Left Behind, and was a big fan of earmarks and
other big government spending; he is not a bold new direction for this
country he is a slight variation in the angle of our dive as we plummet
    from the sky.
