Mr. Inevitability, Mitt Romney

Posted on | March 13, 2012 | 18 Comments

Quin Hillyer of The American Spectator lives in Alabama and reports on the ideological emptiness of the front-runner’s campaign:

At about 7:15, Ann Romney came out to say her husband would be out soon. They knew it was important to do it soon, she said, because they were looking at weather forecasts and were afraid everyone would get drenched.
Then she made her mini-pitch for her husband. It amounted to this: “He’s gonna win anyway, so you should help him win.”
Actually, what she said was this: “It is more and more clear that Mitt is going to be the nominee of the party.” And it’s important, because “I know women, and women are talking about the economy. They are mad. I am mad.” They are all mad about the debt that Barack Obama is leaving as a “burden on our children.” Her husband understands this. That’s why he’ll be out in a minute to tell you about why he should win the race we all know he is going to win. . . .

Read the whole thing. Meanwhile, Politico ‘s Jonathan Martin has details of the latest “inevitability” argument — call it Inevitability 2.0.

It’s inevitable in the same way as a drum solo at a rock concert.  Nobody particularly wants it, but they’re gonna force feed it to us anyway.  Ugh.

It becomes more inevitable when Rick Santorum does stupid things like going to Politico before Stacy, going out of his way to alienate libertarians, and making Guam jokes and wondering why its delegates all when to Romney.

Let’s keep our eye on the prize:  Barack Obama is not inevitable.

But if Rick Santorum wants to be the guy to take him on, he has to expand beyond his base.

Quin’s passage, ‘My wife and I drove around vast portions of the southern half of Mobile County and the city itself on Sunday, and saw not a single Gingrich yard sign, not a single Romney sign, and only about three or four Santorum signs on private property plus several at various public crossings,’ worries me.

The lack of enthusiasm, I think benefits Willard.  The Establishment will get out the vote.

It was the same deal in Michigan and Ohio, Bob: This hasn’t been much of a campaign from the yard-sign point of view, and I’m not sure why. In fact, the Ron Paul people have done a better job in terms of yard signs than any of the contenders.

I have not seen many yard signs anywhere.  Will they pick up in the general election?  Somehow I doubt it.

If you recall, the same situation happened in New Hampshire.

    NH, Michigan, Ohio…all Romney wins.

Lawn signs (as we call them up here in Canada) are a quasi-reliable sign of trends in “base enthusiasm”–none of which bodes well from the reports according to the reports of local observers in Ala and Miss.  ON the other hand, modern campaigns do not have dedicated “lawn sign crews” they way the used to  . . . .

Inevitability 2.0?  They’ve got to be up to at least 5.0 on that by now.

Mocking math just because you can’t do it isn’t much of a strategy.

If Romney wins either state today, the hopes of Santorum, Gingrich, and any other Not Romney will be dashed against the hard rocks of reality.  Look at the remaining states, who’s doing what in the remaining winner-take-all states, and what it takes to compete in bigger media market states, grab a calculator and your most optimistic attitude, and have at it.

Taking a distorted paraphrase of what Mrs. Romney said and making that your headline? I had hoped for better of you than that.

[…] -In a post from this morning, Stacy links a Quin Hillyer report from the campaign trail on a Romney event.  A highlight: By this time, the nine minutes or so of downpour had slowed again to a more gentle rain. Everybody who was there outside had already gotten drenched. Romney so far had spoken for just three minutes. […]
