Kate Zernike of the New York Times:

TRENTON — To measure the decay here in New Jersey’s capital, residents could have counted the unfilled public pools, the shuttered libraries and police stations, the block after block of boarded-up stores and homes.
But they did not need to go that far. The city was falling apart from the top.
It started just a month after Mayor Tony F. Mack took office in 2010, when his housing director quit after it was revealed that the official had being indicted on charges of forgery and theft. Two months later, one of his judicial appointees quit over bad checks and unpaid debt, and his business administrator — the second of seven, during just nine months — resigned, having stolen from a Congressional campaign.
Then the mayor’s half brother was indicted on a charge of using city resources to do private work. And the chief of staff who Mr. Mack promised would finally bring order resigned after the police said they found him near City Hall with heroin.
So it was momentous but not surprising when the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided City Hall on Thursday morning after descending with search warrants the morning before on the homes of the mayor, his brother and one of the mayor’s chief donors. . . .

Keep reading and you’ll eventually discover that the corrupt incompetent mayor is, in fact, a Democrat.

    Of course those of us familiar in this technique knew this corrupt politician was a Democrat by the fact it was not declared he was a Republican in the fist sentence or headline.

    Heall, I knew he was a Democrat the instant the Times didn’t print “Republican” Mayor Tony Mack.

    Well, that and the stealing and drugs and abandoning his constituents…

    “Name That Party!” has always been a fun game to play in media scandal stories.

    New Jersey has its own storied record of political corruption.  In the late ’70s, con artist Mel Weinberg was working scams there when one mark suggested they could buy off a County Commissioner to make sure their “business deal” went through.  Weinberg demurred, because he had no money to pay, but he filed it away.

    Soon thereafter, Mel found himself pinched by the FBI.  With his record, he was looking at serious time, so he wanted to make a deal, but had nothing to offer the feds until he remembered the crooked commissioner.

    So they wired him up, the guy went for it, so did the Mayor, and before you know someone tells Mel and his phony Arab sheik they can buy a congressman with $10 grand.  So the operation moved to DC, and was beginning to snare congressmen with some ease, and one Senator (Williams of NJ, Name that party!).  They were working on others, our old pal John Murtha wanted the cash, he just wanted to send an aide for it rather than take it directly.

    According to Weinberg, they were also scheduled to pay off Herman Talmadge of Georgia, but early that morning someone from the FBI briefed Attorney General Griffin Bell about it for the first time.  Talmadge cancelled an hour before he was to pick up his loot.  Bell shut down the whole operation when it was really just getting started.

    They called it “ABSCAM.”

    Also his being Black.

    That’s become more and more an undesirable descriptive adjective when writing a story about criminality.

    Wouldn’t want the rednecks to get all uppity about there being so many corrupt Black Democrat Mayors you know.

    (although I have to say that Black Mayors are pikers compared to White corrupt Mayors in the amount stolen or misappropriated.)

    Here in Cali with the manifold multiple government courruption scandals, the Leftywhore media NEVER mentions what party the corruptocrats belong to. Which means they are Dems, of course! So at least the people that READ the whole article in TNYT do know it is a Dem. I wish the Left Angeles Times would put that info SOMEWHERE in its coverage.

    In New Jersey Tony Mack is small potatoes, a piker when compared to guys like Hugh Addonizio.  Everything in New Jersey local government is for sale. Everything. Here and there a lone Dudley Do-Right rides in and cleans up some superficial mess. But the system remains, and it always ends up eating him alive. There are 650 some-0dd municipalities and school districts in the state. Far too many for any one reformer to tame. Each and every one has its hand out. You can’t get anything done in this state without paying somebody off. That’s just the way it is.
