Why Memory Matters

“People will not look forward to posterity who never look backward to their ancestors.”
— Edmund Burke
Our Army son posted the photo above, showing his baby girl manning the machine gun, with the caption, “These gun teams get younger every day,” and I thought it was an appropriate illustration for this Memorial Day.
As Americans, we are the heirs of a tradition, profoundly indebted to earlier generations, and owing them a certain duty of gratitude. We must recall that “We the People” ordained the Constitution in order to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.” If we are grateful for that inheritance — as we should be — then we ought to act in such a manner as to show ourselves worthy of our liberty, considering what tremendous sacrifices were required to obtain and keep it.
A few years ago, I told the story of my ancestor, Abraham Isham Bolt, who served in the South Carolina militia that defeated the British at the Battle of Cowpens, a crucial victory in the Revolutionary War, depicted in the climactic scene of the 2000 movie The Patriot. My ancestor was a mere teenager when he served in the militia, as I pointed out:
Every Fourth of July, we celebrate America’s independence, dating this to the anniversary of 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was made public. But it was not the fine phrases of the Declaration — those self-evident truths — that made the United States an independent nation. No, it was the soldiers who fought the war that won our freedom, and how many of those Patriot soldiers were just teenage farm boys like my ancestor?
Nine months of militia service for a 16-year-old is perhaps a small sum in the account balance of history, yet this is a priceless legacy of which I am immensely proud, and it is strange to me that so few Americans know anything about their ancestors, or care anything about history.
We had a little family gathering Sunday, with my son Jefferson in attendance. He’s just finished his second year of law school, and hasn’t been home since last Thanksgiving, so he brought with him a Christmas gift for me, delivered a few months belatedly: A family tree drawn by his girlfriend (who has a master’s degree in library science and does diligent research) showing five complete generations of my ancestors, going all the way back to my great-great-great-grandparents — all 32 of them!
How many people know the names of all 32 of their great-great-great-grandparents? And, I should point out, Abraham Bolt wasn’t among those; he was my great-great-great-great-grandfather, and his son James (b. 1783) was the earliest Bolt ancestor listed in the genealogy prepared by Jefferson’s girlfriend. An awareness of one’s ancestry provides a deeper appreciation of history, which is valuable to our sense of who we are, and gives us a perspective that we might not otherwise possess.
“To live for the moment is the prevailing passion — to live for yourself, not for your predecessors or posterity. We are fast losing the sense of historical continuity, the sense of belonging to a succession of generations originating in the past and stretching into the future. . . .
“Narcissism emerges as the typical form of character structure in a society that has lost interest in the future.”
— Christopher Lasch, The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of Diminishing Expectations (1979)
What could be more narcissistic than the impudence of the soft-handed intelligentsia who think themselves superior to that heroic generation of Patriots who fought for American independence? Patrick O’Donnell at Breitbart tells the history of the “Appeal to Heaven” flag about which liberals have recently become indignant. One suspects that none of those outraged at Justice Alito’s display of that flag could name even one of their ancestors as having served the Patriot cause.
“These gun teams get younger every day,” as my son says, and let’s hope our grandchildren will do better at remembering their heroic ancestors than most of the members of our generation have done.

When I was a young spud growing up in the suburbs of DC, my father used to haul me along on his weekend trips to the Knights of Columbus; in addition to the usual council hall with bar, this council had a swimming pool, which always opened on Memorial Day weekend and closed after Labor Day – never mind that it was usually hot and humid enough to open the pool at the beginning of May and keep it open until early October. So if you were wondering why I eschew swimsuit pics until this time of year, now you know. This week’s pic is courtesy of @kbdabear on X, he that linketh every post that falls from the keyboard of the Ewok and posteth copious quantities of attractive scantily-clad babes besides.

It was Blowout Week for my Senators, who lost two out of three to the Hated Yankees 4-11 and 2-9 after staking Reggie Cleveland to a 9-2 win against Skip Lockwood in the first game; on Friday, Pat Dobson won the first game against the Twins 8-2 before we got pounded 3-15…well, maybe we could have beaten Dick Woodson in Game Three, which was a 1-2 loss, but the hitters weren’t hitting, even with John Lowenstein and Cookie Rojas back in the lineup after five days on the DL. Somehow the A’s did even worse, which means we’re two games out of the cellar in the Beta Division. People are after me for Pat Dobson, offering draft picks for ’73, but it’s way too early in the season to be throwing in the towel. This week we’re facing the Cardinals on Tuesday and the Tribe on Friday, and I’m hoping for at least a .500 week.

Cognitive Decline as a Policy Principle: Understanding Biden’s Confused Agenda
Posted on | May 22, 2024 | Comments Off on Cognitive Decline as a Policy Principle: Understanding Biden’s Confused Agenda
Ed Driscoll at Instapundit had two posts today that, when juxtaposed, tell us a lot about the effect of having a senile president. First, Ed had a post about Bill Maher. Appearing on The View, Maher described Biden as “cadaver-like.” Appearing on Gutfeld, Maher contrasted Biden’s nearly-dead condition with the much more vigorous condition of Donald Trump, even though Trump is just four years younger than Biden.
Then, Ed had a post about the anti-Israel actions of European governments, in which he quoted Jim Treacher:
Biden is currently coddling the Jew-haters in his own party because he desperately needs their votes.
And yet he’s still moaning about Charlottesville in 2017. “Oh, can you believe those Nazis? Look how much they hate the Jews!”
Which is true. What’s also true is that you never saw any of those idiots again.
Seriously, who even are those dumb hillbillies? What are they doing now? It’s been seven years. Who are they influencing? Why should I care?
At the end of that post, Ed linked to a post at Hot Air: “Of Course: Biden Was Plotting With Iran Against Israel”:
Secret talks between Iran and the United States in Oman were making good progress, but have now been jeopardised by the sudden death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister.
Brett McGurk, US President Joe Biden’s senior Middle East adviser, held indirect negotiations earlier this month with Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s point man for negotiations with the West, according to three Iranian sources close to the talks. . . .
The talks focused on three subjects: a shared desire for a change in government in Israel; ending Israel’s war on Gaza; and preventing the conflict from spreading elsewhere in the region.
Stabbing Israel in the back to appease the mullahs in Tehran? As outrageous as that is, it is entirely consistent with the Biden administration’s policy of loudly proclaiming to be pro-Israel while at the same time doing everything possible to aid Israel’s enemies, both in the U.S. and around the world. And notice how Biden’s personal grudge against Netanyahu gets played out as a matter of official policy.
Just in case you forgot about this grudge:
In March 2010, Biden traveled to Jerusalem to push President Barack Obama’s ambitious peace plans on Netanyahu — the prime minister whom the then-vice president, upon landing, called his “close, personal friend of over 33 years.” Obama wanted a freeze on construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank to avoid depriving the Palestinians of land for a future state as U.S. special envoy George Mitchell restarted Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. But upon Biden’s arrival, Netanyahu’s government suddenly announced the construction of 1,600 new Israeli apartments in the disputed territory. This humiliated and enraged Biden, who retaliated by keeping his close personal friend “Bibi” waiting for an hour and a half at dinner that night.
“Close personal friend”? Probably just more Biden malarkey, I suspect, but if it were actually true that Biden and Netanyahu had been “friends” since the 1970s, that didn’t give Biden the right to dictate policy to Netanyahu, and the announcement of the expanded Israeli settlements in the West Bank was a necessary signal, both to the people of Israel and their enemies: “Don’t get any ideas. We’re not going to let this Obama guy bulldoze us into any bad deals.” Anyone who genuinely sympathizes with Israel (as Biden claims he does) would understand Netanyahu’s motives.
When you combine Biden’s personal grudge against Netanyahu with the pro-Hamas sympathies of the Democratic Party’s left-wing grassroots, you have a situation where Biden (who, as Treacher notes, has a habit of smearing Republicans as Nazis) becomes a de facto ally of anti-Semites, and the elderly occupant of the White House is too feeble-minded to find a way to extricate himself from this situation. Why do you think the White House staff is always having to “walk back” things that Biden says? Because he doesn’t even understand his own administration’s policies. Which is a problem I can relate to, because they don’t make any sense at all to me, but shouldn’t the man who is allegedly in charge of the Biden administration be able to understand them?
Would the policies be better if Joe Biden wasn’t senile? I don’t know — Democrats are Democrats, and their policies are always bad — but there might be more coherence to the administration’s policies if it were not for the blatantly obvious mental decline of the Geezer-in-Chief.
The good news is that we might only have a few more months to endure this catastrophic regime. Trump is currently leading the Real Clear Politics poll average, and is also leading in all the battleground states, which means Our Long National Nightmare may soon be over.
The bad news is, 45.8% will vote for Biden, according to the RCP average, and we don’t have enough mental health facilities to treat all these people, so crazy that they would vote to reelect Joe Biden.
