Why We Hate Gresham Barrett

Posted on | May 26, 2010 | 12 Comments

In case you haven’t been following the Folks-Haley saga — and really, this blog is 24/7 Folks-Haley lately — remember that it was supporters of Rep. Gresham Barrett, who’s running for governor of South Carolina, who were reportedly pushing the rumor about Nikki Haley.

Why would Barrett’s people seize on that sleaze? Because Haley is kicking Gresham Barrett’s butt in gubernatorial campaign, that’s why.

And why is Barrett losing? Because he voted for TARP. And that makes him a “leader,” as he explains in a new TV ad:

As a leader, I made a decision. . . . [L]eaders make decisions based on the best information that they have, and they go with it. That’s what I did.

Smearing Nikki Haley? Yeah, that’s what “leaders” do.

Unless some sort of real proof appears before the primary, Haley’s got the nomination locked up. Without real proof, all people are going to see is a scruffy, ugly blogger with delusions of relevance.
If there is some sort of proof, then all hell’s out for noon. I can’t think of a precedent where a female candidate was tagged for running around on her husband. I can’t imagine how it would play in S.Carolina.
In a saner time, Folks could be called out and killed. Legally. Alas.

Wait a freakin’ minute here! The only thing which points to Barrett is Folks himself, who cited unnamed “known Barrett operatives” as the ones “pressuring” him at first, and now points to the campaign official who used to work for Palin but now is with Barrett.

Barrett himself categorically denies any involvement by him OR ANYONE ASSOCIATED WITH HIS CAMPAIGN. So, if Folks’ allegation turns out to be true, Barrett needlessly has sunk his own run.

HOWEVER, since McMaster already denied involvement and stated flatly he does not believe Folks (“he will say anything”), that leaves ONE candidate who hasn’t uttered a peep. The same candidate who is one of the few SC pols on friendly terms with Folks.

Andre Bauer. Wouldn’t it be convenient if Folks were able to take down TWO of his rivals with one story?

Believe what you want to believe.

From my crash course in SC politics I get the impression that if you throw a brick into one of their political functions you’re pretty much guaranteed to hit a no-good, rotten son of a bitch.
