VIDEO: Shirley Sherrod’s Husband Says, ‘We Must Stop the White Man and His Uncle Toms From Stealing Our Elections’

Posted on | July 26, 2010 | 81 Comments

Dan Riehl has the big scoop today at Riehl World View:

And just so you know where the Sherrods are coming from: When their daughter was born in 1967, while America was at war with communist North Vietnam, Charles and Shirley named their baby girl Russia — “with love,” no doubt. Read the rest at Riehl World View.

UPDATE: Yesterday, I called Dan out of the blue — more or less randomly, because I hadn’t talked to him in a while and his name came up in a conversation at the Right Online conference– and he told me about this scoop, which caused me to Tweet:

In phone call today, @danriehl told me, “I swear, I’ll hunt you down and kill your family.” Kinda out of context. #tcot

The “out of context,” you see, was kind of an inside joke, allusion to the charge of “raaaaacism” against Andrew Breitbart after he published a video of Shirley Sherrod. Breitbart says he only later learned had been edited to omit Sherrod’s “moral of the story” explanation that changed the meaning of comments that, in the edited version, were explosively inflammatory — but not as inflammatory as Sherrod’s subsequent accusation on CNN that Breitbart wants to reinstitute chattel slavery.

Dan worked very hard to find this new video and then to document the facts about Charles and Shirley Sherrod’s political history. So when he told me yesterday what he was preparing to release this morning, he made me promise not to breathe a word prematurely to anyone about the content, on penalty of death.

Was this threat merely a figure of speech? Probably. He laughed after he said it. But it’s Dan Riehl, and I certainly wouldn’t want to risk discovering whether he meant ”hunt you down and kill your family” as a metaphor.

Dan’s from Jersey, y’know.

UPDATE II: OK, so the Sherrods named their daughter “Russia,” what about their son, Kenyatta? No doubt, he was named for Kenyan dictator Jomo Kenyatta. Because I’m in Vegas today, I don’t have access to my home-office reference library, but from Wikipedia we learn:

In 1932 to 1933, he briefly studied economics in Moscow at the Comintern School, KUTVU (University of the Toilers of the East) before his sponsor, the Trinidadian communist George Padmore, fell out with his Soviet hosts, forcing Kenyatta to move back to London. . . .
He made the Kikuyu-led KANU practically the only political party of Kenya. He consolidated his power greatly, and placed several of his Kikuyu tribesmen in most of the powerful state and security offices and posts. State security forces harassed dissidents and were suspected of complicity in several murders of prominent personalities deemed as threats to his regime . . .
In the 1969 elections, Kenyatta banned the only other party, KPU . . .
He remained president until his death . . . in 1978.

So, like Mussolini, Kenyatta was a communist-turned-nationalist. He made Kenya a one-party state and thus became one of those typical Third World despots who suppress all opposition and surround themselves with corrupt cronies.

This was the man for whom the Sherrods named their son. And because we wouldn’t want to be accused of taking that out of context, we’ll point out that Kenyatta Sherrod seems to have turned out to be an upstanding citizen, a health care executive for Pfizer-Thermacare in Albany, Ga.

Another triumph of capitalism. Is America a great country or what?

Dan’s now got his own Memeorandum thread, and gets the “Hmmm” heard ’round the world from Instapundit.

Isn’t it the white man’s elections too? Just wondering.

So, let me get this straight:

The Sherrods think Brietbart wants to put blacks back into slavery, Obama is not really a black man, a black that happens to be a conservative is an Uncle Tom, yet I am the one who is racist?

By the way, have any of the people that constantly use the Uncle Tom reference actually read the book? Uncle Tom was not a race traitor. He was killed because he refused to hurt an older black slave and wouldn’t turn in the runaways. He was a man of character. I wanted to understand the reference so I read the book a few months ago.

Wow. You know I thought that not only was Shirley Sherrod mysteriously silent over the weekend, after going on every network except Fox last week – but also Ben Jealous of the NAACP (unless I missed an appearance).

I figured there was a whole more to Ms. Sherrod that would come out. Of course the Obama lobbyists (disguised as “news organizations”) will ignore this.

Hmmm. Did Breitbart really make a mistake posting the NAACP video, or is he a grandmaster at 3-D media chess?

    ?Our Elections?

    Huh?

What happened to Majority Rule with Minority Protection?

Charles Sherrod thinks he OWNS American elections? There is a strong smell of hubris coming from the Sherrods.

Did Breitbart really make a mistake posting the NAACP video, or is he a grandmaster at 3-D media chess?

Almost certainly the latter. Even if he had known about the editing, he could hardly have found a better way of getting MSM (unintentionally) to focus scrutiny on the question: “What kind of people are getting agency jobs in the Obama administration?”

When you’re as deep into the Zen of things as Breitbart is, sometimes even your “mistakes” work to your advantage.

gg, read the book, you dummy. He becomes a martyr.. The moral hero of the story.

Uncle Tom almost succumbs to hopelessness, as his faith in God is tested by the hardships of the plantation. However, he has two visions, one of Jesus and one of Eva, which renew his resolve to remain a faithful Christian, even unto death. He encourages Cassy to escape, which she does, taking Emmeline with her. When Tom refuses to tell Legree where Cassy and Emmeline have gone, Legree orders his overseers to kill Tom. As Tom is dying, he forgives the overseers who savagely beat him. Humbled by the character of the man they have killed, both men become Christians. Very shortly before Tom’s death, George Shelby (Arthur Shelby’s son) arrives to buy Tom’s freedom, but finds he is too late.

The Shirley: when a third party initially appears to be an innocent victim of an attempt to bring someone else’s misdeeds to light, although the innocent victim (the “Shirley”) is subsequently revealed to deserve everything they got, and then some.

The Shirley becomes The Full Shirley when the Shirley responds by calling people racists.

To Pull a Shirley: to try to deflect valid and highly visible criticism from yourself by suggesting that some other innocent party is being wrongly harmed by the publicity surrounding your malfeasance.

Wow, wiki. What a great reference for interpretation of a major historical novel.

i read the book when i was 12 years old,

I was going to mock you for having a faulty memory, but then realized that means you probably just read it last year. You might want to read it again in a few years when you’re applying for college, just so that it’s fresher in your mind.

While I know I am wasting my time arguing with someone who is probably a precocious teenager on summer recess, the point is that in any context, “Uncle Tom” is a ridiculous smear. Whatever the merits of contemporary literary criticism, the idea that Uncle Tom was some kind of race traitor is farcical, especially considering that there were characters in the same exact novel (Sambo and Quimbo) that more accurately capture the essence of what is meant by the term.

And while I don’t mind wiki for the purposes of getting the essential facts of a story correctly, it’s no substitute for using one’s own reasoned analysis.

I didn’t bother with the quotes because it should have been obvious for what it was… cut and paste from internet’s version of Cliff Notes.

Conservative Girl referenced the novel first, you responded back, completely ignoring her point about the book…

Love it! “The Shirley” will now join the ranks of the term “to pull a Gates” – meaning of course to accuse someone in authority of racism, when none was intended nor expressed.

PS – can we agree to just ignore gg – let’s starve the little beast. He’ll slink away looking for another forum to crash.

What part of this the Zummoron doesn’t get?

There is only One Interpretation, and that’s Literal–Creationist morons et al–I suppose.

Is this even supposed to be English?

Again, lay down the crackpipe. Have a cup of coffee, and get back to me when you graduate high school.

  • Estragon

Of course Sherrod is a marxist. She was appointed by a marxist President to work for a marxist regime.

Lets imagine RSM’s TOM time shifted back to the Slavery era in America. He would be–a confederate sympathizer(minus racism, of course! that he is?–would be zealously pimping the Anti-Tom literature (authored predominately by southern white women) on his blog.

Nice premise Kejda, but for summer reading on this topic go with Island in the Sea of Time.

Of course sometimes history does not play out the way you think it will…

Have you ever confided to your boss John Podhoretz about your affection for Charles Johnson? Just wondering. And do not take your laptop to the beach. It is bad for it. Then again, given your pasty complection, you might consider taking some Vitamin D supplements.

gg/Kejda? Your racist slip is showing. How was Colin Powell an Uncle Tom? He worked for the Bush Adminstration, disagreed with Bush’s policies, left the administration and voiced his opposition. Then he supported Obama for President.

As for Ms. Rice, she supported Bush’s policies. She was consistent in that. She obviously had some disagreements over policy, just not to the same degree as Powell. So you are of the belief any black person who supported Bush is an Uncle Tom (or Aunt Thomasina)?

    Are you nuts?

As for Black History Month, perhaps you missed Smitty’s post of this guy. I guess he is an Uncle Tom to you too?

I thought you were supposed to be a libertarian (misguided, foolish, and addled by too much LGF exposure). But you are obviously just a lunatic.
