It’s 5 a.m. and I Haven’t Been Able to Sleep All Night
Posted on | September 6, 2010 | 113 Comments
Last night, just after 11, I decided to go to the store.
And hit a deer.
The car that my son worked so hard to fix?
The car I just spent $700 to fix?
Totalled.
The insurance probably won’t pay as much as we owed on it.
So . . . the trip I’d planned to Delaware today is canceled.
Probably no BlogCon, no 9/12.
Probably no more travel for weeks, even months.
Completed immobilized, just at the onset of the campaign season.
An irretrievable disaster.
I’m emotionally wiped out.
UPDATE: TERRORISM ON FOUR HOOVES!

I’m reminded of a prayer given by someone at the end of their rope:
“Please, Lord, give me a break…and don’t let it be my back!”
This pain will pass, to be sure.
—
Is a deer accountable for its “choices”?
To the extent that he will experience the effect of his actions, certainly!
If a deer runs in front of a car, he’s apt to get run over.
If a deer watched a couple of his buddies be run over by passing cars, it’s possible he would learn not to run into a street.
Accountability and responsibility do not necessarily require a distorted sense of identified entification.

I hit the tip jar for what I could. God bless you and your family.
Believe me, I know how you must feel. As someone on the outside looking in this time, I also know that Smitty is right, and your wife and children still have a husband and a dad who loves them. Thank God for that.

For the last time I will attempt to hit the tip jar in another fashion, please send me an email with an address so that I can send a you a money order. It does not need to be your home, perhaps in the care of a business that you frequent? I would love to help out.

I know you’ll be able to joke about his later, but right now it’s unbearable. These are the thin margins that freelancers live with – it’s worse than running a restaurant. Still, glad you’re OK. Try to get some rest; your mind will feel better for it.

C’mon, if god wanted you to have a car he wouldn’t have sacrificed one of his deer to get you off the road.
Now, perhaps if you pray, no, scratch that idea, … just get a job save up and you will find your way into another car.
This on-line pan-handling, is not pretty.

Stacy,
I am just glad you are okay my friend. I about pooped my drawers when I saw that tweet last night.
Welcome to my World on the car business. I had to scrap mine. Too many issues. But I can feel for you on the money out the window thing. I’ve been there too myself; more times that I will ever care to admit. I am quite sure you have good care insurance; if you are still making payments. It would be full coverage. If it’s a total loss, they’ll just write you a check for a replacement car. Might not be as much as you’d like. But you’ll be back in wheels in no time flat.
Hang in there Buddy, things will turn around and as your Wife said to me in a message over on facebook. “This too shall pass, and what does not kill us, makes us stronger!”
Your Friend in Detroit,
-Pat

I am sorry you are going through this.
I know things seem bad for you now, but things could be worse.
If you had the vehicle insured (and fortunately it appears you did), you will at a minimum get the blue book for it. Do not let the insurnace company low ball you. You can fight on the value of the vehicle and win. You use facts, comp sales for KIAs, etc. In fact, with used car prices up, that is more reason to get a higher value on the insured value.
Put this all in perspective. You just got an exclusive with Todd Palin. No one got hurt (except for the deer). It was a KIA.
With autosales crashing, I suspect there will be really good incentives on vehicles this fall. Get something you can afford and you will have a new vehicle that will be perfectly dependable for years.
