Not News? Columbia Professor and Huffington Post Contributor David Epstein Pleads Guilty in Incest Case

Posted on | May 25, 2011 | 84 Comments

You will recall that Palin-hating blogger David Epstein was arrested in December and charged with felony incest for having sex with his adult daughter (now 24) from 2006 through 2009.

One of our readers has obtained court documents (for Case #2010NY090162) indicating that Epstein copped a plea to a misdemeanor charge of attempted incest. (Click the image to enlarge).

That ruling was on May 11 — two weeks ago — and yet I can find no news reports about Epstein’s conviction. You might think that at least the New York Times would find the disposition of this case newsworthy.

The alert reader who informed me of this previously unreported news also passed along the court documents to some members of the Columbia University faculty, resulting in this angry e-mail from Epstein’s lawyer:

Mr. [Redacted], I am an attorney and I represent Dr. Epstein. Please be advised that he does not wish to receive any further communications from you ever again. I have already alerted the District Attorney’s Office to the emails you have sent him thus far, and should you ever contact him or me again, we will make the appropriate criminal complaint to law enforcement.

Well, facts are facts and if Professor Epstein has now pleaded guilty, the presumption of innocence is over. Epstein is still listed as a faculty member on the Columbia University Web site

Is Epstein’s behavior something that the university tolerates or approves?

Someone should ask Professor John Huber (jdh39@columbia.edu), chairman of the Department of Political Science, or Columbia University President Lee Bollinger (officeofthepresident@columbia.edu).

Hey, pretty soon, “How to be a pedophile and get away with it” will be a course requirement to graduate at Columbia.

    I guess he felt entitled!

     They were both adults.

    “I guess he felt entitled!”

I think his first and worst crime was naming the poor girl “Entitled Epstein.”

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

She was an adult during all of this so why wasn’t she charged with incest as well?

And if they’re consenting adults, why do we care?

Hey, he’s a Columbia University professor.  One way or another, they’ve been screwing our kids for years.  Why should their own be any different?

If you don’t know, you aren’t a part of any “we” that includes civilized human beings.

I guess you really can’t call him a pedophile, considering his daughter is 24. And you can’t call him a rapist, since she evidently consented.  However, what you can call him is, one sick, twisted, disgusting, unnatural, perverted, piece of s**t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wyatt-Ironbridge/100002122973043 Wyatt Ironbridge

People who screw their children are disgusting. A father is in a position of authority, like a teacher or employer, and always will be. I would think a modern thinking liberal person would know this is similar to rape.
“We” should care because they must be identified and shunned to show our social disapproval. That is, if you’re capable of disapproving of anything, and I realize that sort of thing sounds judgmental to some people.

    Chain this animal.

I assume that you’re addressing me … Let me put it this way … You want to waste taxpayers’ money to prosecute a consenting relationship between adults?

Further, then one must assume that you’re willing to spend somewhere around $50,000/yr on each of them to put them in prison … They should have both been prosecuted or both let go … prosecuting only one is discrimination.

Further, you will deprive the state of the taxes they would have paid as well.

So now you’re looking at the taxpayers spending $100,000+/yr …

    To what end?

  • JeffS

Female students should not be alone with Perfesser Epstein.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

And what do you call her? She was half of this consensual  relationship.

  • http://pointofagun.blogspot.com/ Dave C

I think you’re protesting too much..

  • http://pointofagun.blogspot.com/ Dave C

And what relationship does David Epstein have with Jeffrey Epstein?

    (besides just the last name)

  • Anonymous

Well, actually, I was thinking about $5 for enough bullets for the firing squad. And to answer your question below, I’d call her everything I call him… and I guess I’d have to spend $10 bucks for bullets, because I wouldn’t deprive her of her ration.

”Female anything should not be alone with Perfesser Epstein.”

    FTFY.

  • http://pointofagun.blogspot.com/ Dave C

I think students are safe.. it’s his female relatives that shouldn’t be alone..

geez, Lobo, how many letters to Penthouse Forum have you been responsible for?

  • Anonymous

None other than a common surname and that they are both perverts.

The fact that you have to ask this question indicates that you wouldn’t understand or accept the answer.

There’s a question I could live without the answer to.

  • Alabster2k

    hahaha… so truish!!

    Heh!

    Heh!

  • http://2011.ak4mc.us/ McGehee

Remember when the same-sex marriage lobby insisted that allowing SSM wouldn’t lead to efforts to normalize polygamy and incest?

  • Joe

But Dan, he is into consensual sex.  How bourgeois.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

How so? Because I dare to tell you that it’s none of your business?

BTW, I don’t have a daughter … at least none that I know of.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

If you’re familiar with letters to Penthouse, then my guess would be fewer than you’re responsible for.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

The fact that you have no answer indicates that you can’t come up with a good reason as to why you want to stick your nose into their business.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

So now you want to kill two people who have harmed no one?

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

Not an effort to “normalize” either … But why should either be a criminal act? Is it your position that any behavior that isn’t “normal” should be criminalized?

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

Since your mother has a “position of authority” over you, would you obey her demand to have sex with her? … I doubt that you would but somehow you think that an adult daughter would cave in so easily.

Did it ever occur to your Victorian mind that she seduced him?

I don’t care if you shun them … but I do care about wasting taxpayers’ money to prosecute and imprison them. I think there are better uses for that money.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

Don’t you mean chain those animals? You can’t discount her involvement.

  • Drock55

You are trying to tell me that Prof. Epstein just so happened to have sexual relations with his daughter when she turned 19, and not a day before; I call BS. As far as the constantly adult argument, I think the Prof. is too deep into his daughters head for her to be a consenting adult.

  • Mzk1

I always said, incest is next.

But in truth, why is incest and polygamy prosecutable, but not adultery and “sodomy”? Heck, the latter two are more commonly condemned than polygamy, which seems to be an issue particular to only one religion.

  • http://lupussolusluna.blogspot.com/ LoboSolo

She was 20 when it she first had sex with him. So if he had some type of mind control thing over her why did he wait for two years after she turned 18?

The answer … He obviously didn’t have have her under his “control” or he wouldn’t have waited the two years. You need to toss out your Victorian mindset and realize that she was, at a minimum, a willing accomplice and possibly even the instigator.

First off it is illegal. Then we have the moral problems. I find it disgusting to be in a position of trust over another human being and someone takes advantage of that trust.

Then we have the physical problems. What if she would have gotten pregnant? Before you even think abortian shut the hell up.

Happy now? Go have a snit.

Except that they haven’t harmed no one. They are a horrible example, and there are boundaries no society should allow anyone to cross.
