SHOCKER: Joe McGinniss’s Credibility Destroyed by E-Mail to Jesse Griffin; UPDATE: Griffin Does Not Deny E-Mail

Posted on | September 22, 2011 | 43 Comments

“Jesse Griffin, the Alaska blogger who Saturday claimed in an ‘exclusive’ report that Todd and Sarah Palin were divorcing, will no longer work as an Anchorage kindergarten teaching assistant, school officials confirmed Wednesday.
“Griffin’s resignation followed revelations that the 49-year-old Griffin had posted (under the alias ‘Gryphen’) sexually explicit advocacy of pornography and masturbation on his ‘Immoral Minority’ blog.”

Robert Stacy McCain, Aug. 6, 2009

“I was introduced to author Joe McGinniss, who is up here researching HIS Sarah Palin book, and who also turned out to be a huge fan of both AKM’s and I.”
Jesse Griffin, Oct. 3, 2009

Having previously expressed shock that Joe McGinniss would associate with a proven liar like Jesse Griffin, it was an even greater shock today to see that Andrew Breitbart has reprinted what appears to be an e-mail from McGinniss to Griffin.

And I say “what appears to be” an e-mail, because neither Griffin nor McGinniss has acknowedged the e-mail. It would be incredible that (a) McGinniss would have been such a fool as to trust someone as dishonest as Griffin with confidential communication of any kind, and (b) Breitbart managed to obtain such an e-mail. So, having stated these caveats . . .

HOLY F–KING CRAP!

From: Joe McGinniss
To: Jesse Griffin

Subject: I have to ask you for help

Jesse–

Legal review of my manuscript is underway and here’s my problem: no one has ever offered documentation of any of the lurid stories about the Palins. . . .
[Y]ou write frequently that you know things you can’t yet post, but that soon “all will be revealed.” This has been going on since I first became aware of your blog, but as far as I know you haven’t substantiated a single claim or provided verification for a single rumor that you’ve posted about Sarah’s personal life, or the personal lives of any Palin family members. . . .
Neither from you, the Enquirer, AlaskaWTF, palingates.com or anyone else, have I seen a credible, identified source backing any of the salacious stories about the Palin family.
Thus — as Random House lawyers are already pointing out to me — nothing I can cite other than my own reporting rises above the level of tawdry gossip. The proof is always just around the corner, but that’s a corner nobody has been able to turn. . . .

If this e-mail is legit, McGinniss has made an admission so absolutely devastating that Random House would be entirely justified if they recalled the book, pulped it, and sued McGinniss for breach of contract.

Forget for a moment what McGinniss says about the “tawdry gossip” he repeated in the book and instead focus on this: McGinniss was privately communicating with — and revealing privileged information about his discussions with Random House lawyers to — an infamously untrustworthy person, who fabricated a clearly false divorce rumor about the Palins, and who was fired from his school job because of his NSFW blogging about pornography and masturbation.

For McGinniss to be associated in any way with a dishonest smear merchant like Griffin is bad enough. For McGinniss to be communicating in such a confidential and familiar way with Griffin — to divulge such things in writing, ending with a fond expression that he is “looking
forward to seeing” Griffin — reveals McGinniss to be a man of profoundly bad judgment.

McGinniss provides Griffin with a laundry list of “tawdry gossip” for which he admits there is absolutely no factual basis yet — as Andrew Breitbart details in a separate post — nearly all those salacious stories are included in McGinniss’s book as if they were true, and have been cited by the media as “revelations” allegedly unearthed by McGinniss’s investigative journalism!

READ THE WHOLE THING

UPDATE: At his blog, Jesse Griffin has confirmed — by not denying — the authenticity of the e-mail published by Breitbart:

[A] leaked email between Joe McGinniss and myself . . . is making the rounds, suggesting that Joe did not have the facts to back up the allegations in his book. (By the way he certainly does.)
Yes I have seen the article, as well as the vicious attacks directed at Joe and myself.
However at this time I cannot provide a comment because I believe that there is an ongoing investigation.
What I can tell you right now is that I DID NOT leak, or provide access, to any e-mails between myself and anyone else. Period!
I will also let you know that I will not help to provide traffic to that site by allowing a conversation about the article on this blog. I apologize, as I really dislike censorship, but I am sure you understand the decision.

Griffin’s nonsense about “an ongoing investigation” is obviously just a smokescreen to cover his own stupidity. In all likelihood, Griffin forwarded the McGinniss e-mail to people he thought he could trust, attempting to solicit their assistance. Griffin is such a damned fool he probably can’t remember who he sent it to, and he probably doesn’t even understand how damaging the e-mail is to McGinniss’s credibility.

BTW, readers are invited to contribute to my “unauthorized biography” of Levi Johnston’s sister, who is rumored to be one of McGinniss’s sources. I’m using The Joe McGinniss Method of Investigative Journalism, where vaguely sourced gossip is treated as fact.

UPDATE II: Attempting to defend himself, McGinniss e-mails Mediaite:

My email to Jesse Griffin was an effort to secure Alaskan help in obtaining further corroboration of allegations about Sarah Palin that came to my attention during my research. My reporting continued beyond the date of the email, and only information that checked out to my satisfaction and that of my publisher was included in the book. Ultimately, I published only those allegations which I found to be credible. Other allegations that could not be sufficiently verified, including some of those referenced in my email, are not in my book.

Again, refer to Breitbart’s point-by-point analysis of how the “tawdry gossip” appears in McGinniss’s book. Nearly every item on the list that McGinniss described to Griffin as lacking “substantiation” was included in the book with no proof whatsoever and usually with extremely vague attribution as to the sources making the claims.

It would appear, then, that McGinniss is offering as corroboration only his own personal judgment as to which allegations were “credible.” Other than Palin’s known political enemies — Colleen Cottle, John Stein, et al. — there are no named sources for these claims and, as Breitbart notes, McGinniss’s rather artful attributions to Cottle and Stein indicate that they are merely relating second-hand local gossip. But the subtitle of McGinniss’s book is not “Second-Hand Gossip From Wasilla, Alaska,” it’s “Searching for the Real Sarah Palin.”

What does this ugly and utterly unsubstantiated gossip, repeated by Palin’s enemies, have to do with “the Real Sarah Palin”? Nothing at all, except perhaps to indicate what a malicious pack of jackals her enemies are. And there is something profoundly ridiculous about idea that someone who relies on Jesse Griffin for research assistance is a sound judge of what is “credible.”

Mr. Griffin pretty much admits the e-mail is true in his latest blog post, where says, “Okay obviously I cannot address this issue without also addressing the story about a leaked email between Joe McGinniss and myself that is making the rounds, suggesting that Joe did not have the facts to back up the allegations in his book…  However at this time I cannot provide a comment because I believe that there is an ongoing investigation.

What I can tell you right now is that I DID NOT leak, or provide access, to any e-mails between myself and anyone else.  Period!”

Pretty much tells he that this e-mail is true. Also, given his track record,  it could mean Griffin is lying through his teeth when he says he didn’t leak anything.

Don’t you understand what Breitbart might be doing here? Its brilliant. Now this is pure speculation on my part, but I think Breitbart just turned the tables on McGinnis and the Palin haters.

Let me ask you this question. Does this email have to be real?
Read it again. Do you really think either Joe McGinniss or Jesse Griffin would sue if it were a total fabrication?
How do they counter what this email says?
For one thing, most of it is probably true, but in order to claim it isn’t or that McGinnis never sent it, he would have to sue Breitbart and you know he won’t do that because what McGinnis put in his book about Sarah Palin wasn’t true either…   it was all rumour by un-named sources. Can you imagine the discovery on that one?

I laughed all through the Brietbart posts… and the email. I think Breitbart is one of the more brilliant media guys around and I am glad he is on our side. He just crapped all over McGinnis and there is nothing McGinnis can do about it.

    Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

My take as well. Joe screwed Jeannie Devon, Sad Sack Frank Bailey, and their partner, some crazy a$$clown whose name I can’t remember.

I suspect that the Gryphen forwarded the email to one of the offended peeps and THEY got it to Breitbart OR one of of the OTHER anklebiters did, to protect Devon and Bailey from potential lawsuit.

Gryphen’s a man in clown shoes right now. He basically just vouched for the authenticity of the email.

Idiot. He should go back to working at a kindergarten.

    Oh, wait….

I believe that both McGinniss and Random House may be in for more than a few sleepless nights.  McGinniss knew that the only way to attract attention to his book was to come up with something that none of the other 60 books about Palin hasn’t already said.  To that end, he was willing to plunge into the sewer of the AK bloggers such as Griffin, Devon, Beagle, and the rest.  For their part, Random House wanted to damage Palin’s political career, and her family, so much that they were willing to overlook the fact that the book was a pack of lies.  Essentially, McGinniss and Random House put their trust in Griffin and the others, even though they are really dispicable people who will do anything to get their own names in the paper, and that would include screwing both McGinniss and Random House.

Random House, and McGinniss both richly deserve to be taken apart piece by piece.

Heck jesse griffen sold his email to Andrew—-would fit with his type of activity—-anything to make a $$$$ or two.

    griffen/gryphen checklist of boasting—–read no. 7.

    Sunday, September 18, 2011
Gryphen’s Sarah Palin checklist. A work in progress.
When Sarah Palin burst on the scene as John McCain’s VP candidate and started fanning the flames of racism against Barack Obama, as well as making incredibly dangerous and fraudulent claims against our future President, I made a mental list of priorities that I wanted to help accomplish. (By the way this list evolved over time and now includes subjects that I was not even aware were coming down the pike in 2008.)
    1) Stop John McCain and Sarah Palin from making it to the White House.
    2) Reveal the truth behind the fantasy that Sarah Palin is a good and effective Governor.
    3) Get her out of office!
    4) Reveal the pathetic and controversial truth about Sarah Palin’s personal mythology.
    5) Provide a platform for those who know truthful stories about Palin, yet are afraid to report them to the press.
    6) Direct focus on Palin, and her family’s, attempts to grift money from her ignorant supporters, and report on how frivolously she spends that money.
    7) Help journalists, authors, documentary makers, and anybody willing to tell the truth about Sarah Palin, make contact with sources willing to tell of their experiences with the Grizzled Mama.
    8) Reveal to the widest segment of the American public possible, one of the BIGGEST, and most egregious, hoaxes ever perpetrated on them by a politician in our country’s history. Babygate!
    9) Draw back the cloak of secrecy that shields those that supported, and used Sarah Palin for their own nefarious reasons, to reveal them to the American public.
    10) Help to make sure that another potentially dangerous politician, like Sarah Palin, George Bush, or John Edwards never gets close to the White House again. (I only include Edwards because his adultery could have made him a very easy person to blackmail into supporting policies that could have done our country great harm.)
So let’s see how I’ve done.

    1) After her defeat I received a lot of heartfelt thanks from many of the visitors here.
But in my opinion it was mostly undeserved.
I did only a small part in getting the truth out about Sarah Palin, John McCain, and the Republican party.
Others like Katie Couric, Keith Olbermann, Charlie Gibson, and even Tine Fey deserve FAR more credit than I do.  Of course ultimately the real thanks should go to Sarah Palin herself for being such an incredibly unqualified, and gaffe prone candidate.
    (Half-check mark for me.)
    2) I helped to found the Alaskans for Truth, and used my blog and networking, to get the truth out about Troopergate, the per-diems she paid herself to stay in her own house, the free travel vouchers she got on behalf of family members, the cronyism that riddled her administration, etc., etc., etc., to my fellow Alaskans.
    (Check mark!)
    3) I don’t actually know how much I helped to accomplish this, but she’s out! (Check mark!)
    4) I don’t believe there are too many people who are now unaware that the idyllic life that the Palins paint for themselves is pure mooseshit. Check mark!
    5) I helped Mercede start her blog, wrote posts containing information from anonymous sources about the Palins that they could not get published in other places, helped Shailey get her story out in the National Enquirer, on this blog, and later on her own blog, tried to help Levi get his book written two years ago when it would have made a huge impact, and have maintained a blogroll linking to blogs (“Sarah Palin’s Least Favorite Blogs”) that have done some truly ground breaking work on getting the truth out about Klondike Kardashian. (Check mark!)
    6) From SarahPAC, to “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”, to Dancing with the Stars, and even to Palin’s 2012 Political Prick Tease, I have tried to rake away the Palin bullshit to lay bare what is REALLY taking place as often as possible.
(Half check mark. I could have done better.)
    7) I have provided support to Geoffrey Dunn, Nick Broomfield, Joe McGinniss,  as well as others, and I have helped them as much as I could to make contact with people living in Wasilla, and around Alaska, that have stories to tell about the REAL Sarah Palin. I have certainly not provided ALL of their sources, and in fact all of them have made very impressive contacts of their own, but I did what I could. Some truths remain unrevealed.
    (Half check mark.)
    8) Most of this work has taken place right here on this blog, or on one of the blogs in the IM blogroll, but with Joe’s book we are finally seeing the bizarre story reaching a much larger audience, and hopefully with the release of Fred’s book , a much larger audience still.
(Pending check mark I hope to give myself soon.)
    9) The Koch brothers, Fox News, the Dominionists, and the Republican party have all had their hands up the back of Sarah Palins blouse working her like a ventriloquist dummy voicing on their behalf crazy inflammatory things like “death panels,” or “palling around with terrorists.'” Or ginning up racial hatred toward Barack Obama or the Muslim community.  This is clearly a work in progress, but I believe that we have made some significant connections between Palin and her puppeteers that have caused them some serious blowback and have forced them to abandon her in order to move on to less controversial marionettes.  However now that we know how they operate we can remain vigilant and help to identify the NEXT empty vessel that they fill up with their rhetorical poison.
    Looking at you Rick Perry!
    (Half check mark.)
    10) This has ALWAYS been my ultimate goal, even while I am recognizing the possible futility of ever making it a reality.
Sarah Palin was chosen to be McCain’s VP for the most superficial reasons imaginable.  She was attractive, she had faked having a Down Syndrome child to cement her pro-life position, she had hacked various polls to make herself seem popular in Alaska, and she was considered a Christian.
And that my friends was the whole package.
The fact that this occurred should have sent an electric shock of realization to the American population that candidates for the most important political positions in our country were being selected by shadowy figures who have determined that we are so simple minded that we could be seduced by a horribly unqualified pretty face, trained to read talking points off of cue cards.
If this had worked, and it came much closer to working than I think most of us want to admit, it would have furthered a continuing change in the political realities of our country that could have proved devastating.
This change has been orchestrated by the Republican party and started with Ronald Reagan, an actor who played the President, to George W. Bush, a simpleton who played a cowboy playing a President, to a Sarah Palin, a telegenic spokes model who played a Governor, who could have been groomed to play the President, once John McCain kicked the bucket served out his term and she ran in 2012. (Insert scream of horror here.)
Ultimately THIS is what the American voting population needs to be educated about, and Sarah Palin is the perfect example to illustrate that lesson. After reading what Frank Bailey, Geoffrey Dunn, and Joe McGinniss have written, it is clear that the information is now available for any of those who want to really understand how completely broken the political system is in this country.
Now all we have to do is help to encourage people to read the information that is now available, and the information that is still coming, about Sarah Palin, and then use that to vet the shiny new politicians that are just over the next horizon.
That sounds simple, right?  Yeah right.
Well I am not giving up.  After coming this far, there is NO WAY I am just walking away now.
    Are you with me?
If you are then I perhaps someday this item will have a check mark as well. But not yet.

Joe McGinniss is a sleazy gossip mongering opportunist.  Unfortunately Palin haters made a market for this sort of crap.  Problem is most of them are not going to drop $20+ for the book.  So while the Andrew Sullivans and Kos and Huff Puffs will spin Palin rumors from it (and make money on traffic) McGinniss and his publishing house will likely not see any profits.  I see a crash in the price of McGinniss’ book in the near future .  Because basically it is a work of fiction.  And a bad one at that.

Something in the milk ain’t clean.

If McGinniss knew his allegations lacked foundations, and the publisher’s editors and lawyers still approved publishing those allegations, then the publisher is in league with McGinniss and his sponsor.

Palin Derangement Syndrome aside, the judges on Random House’s payroll may not be able to save the publisher, author, and other employees of the publisher.  If said judges toss out the case, the judiciary as a whole will become a major campaign issue, second only to the economy.

As a public figure, it’s hard for Palin to sue nobody what is said, unless a couple of conditions are met:  malicious intent, and reckless disregard for the truth.  We’re pretty darned close to that – close enough to where even the big media lawyers start advising to “make it go away” ASAP.
