I’ve been bothered by something lately – you know how I hate to complain – but I keep seeing these Nationwide Insurance commercials with a 20-something female narrator with a baby-doll voice ends the ad with, “We put members first, because we don’t have shareholders.”

    What a load of hooey!

There are two types of casualty (property) insurance companies: mutual like Nationwide and State Farm, or stock like AllState and GEICO. It’s really just the way they are structurally capitalized.

Do you know what advantage your Nationwide “membership” gives you on rates? None, they are all figured on actuarial projections, claims experience, and investment return. If you are a good risk, the company has been experiencing lower than expected losses covering your type of risk, or its investments have exceeded projections, you get a lower rate. Otherwise you do not, “member” or not.

Same thing for claims – and for that matter, customer service. There is not a single advantage a policyholder could discern from buying from one type of insurer than another. None.

But the commercial implies to the gullible target audience of young people and females in particular that they are somehow of a higher moral character by not having one structure over another. No shareholders, no big bad businessmen here, sister!

    Oy!
