Apparently Germany does not want its pedophiles to be ashamed anymore.

I think it’s more about guiding them towards getting counselling. This is a very good idea. If peados can get help in managing their condition and not “acting out” a lot of grief would be saved.

Yes, that is how it is advertised. And if counseling actually does reduce or prevent offending, that is good. However, from what I understand, such counseling may have mixed and uncertain results. Since they have accepted the premise that pedophilia is a fixed “orientation,” there is no “cure” that removes it.

What concerns me is that this campaign and any such counseling it provides is trying to ramp up sympathy for pedophiles. The commercials depict this as some kind of physiological compulsion and pedophiles as some poor, oppressed group who are deterred from “treatment” because of society’s dim view of their attractions. The implicit message is that if pedophiles offend, then it is partly society’s fault for not reaching out to them.

The official message of this campaign seems to be “you should not be ashamed but you should not act on it.” And perhaps some “gold star” pedophiles will take that to heart. However, I fear that more are only going to hear the “you should not be ashamed” part and take it in another direction.

But at least Germany has not yet declared pedophilia to be a disability that warrants governmental benefits, like Greece did.

I think that problem already does exist and this campaign wont have an effect either way. Peados as a group of offender are diverse. I only have experience with those incarcerated. Of the ones who dont have self loathing issues are two groups. one that see sex with minors as perfectly fine and liberated and those that condemn it as prudish. The second are those that enjoy it BECAUSE it is wrong. These are the sort that make a mission of infiltrating groups like churches where they get to have access to kiddies and thumb thier noses at the parents. Both of these groups are very dangerous and they already are beyond the scope of a program like this. i.e. It wont make them any worse.

Of those that do have self loathing issues there are those that are so repressed they dont even realise they are prone to it. Others do and are deeply ashamed, have probably acted out and not got caught and desperately DONT want to reoffend. I wont hazard a guess as to percentages because they group I knew already were incarcerated. Offender treatment programs are geared to explaining why children are damaged by sexual contact. They steer away from shaming and concentrate on strategies to avoid situations where temptations arise.

I was involved in a much better program. What we did was organise a meeting between church leaders and pedos to discuss strategies for making the youth groups safer for kids in the church. You need a facilitator who is a prisoner, but not a sex offender to get the power balance right. The pedos will talk about weakness in the organisation that pedos will take advantage of. The classic is disfunctional families where the pedo will act as an “uncle”. The side effect is that awareness is raised about the issue in general and the availability of counselling is emphasised.

I would hope that this program would be designed so as there was no way any pedo would see it as normalising their behavior.

Slightly off topic. When I was growing up we used to spend hours snorkling round a jetty. This creepy POS started hanging round watching us. We chased him off with catapults and thankfully he ran off before he got a spear in his gut. We didn’t even bother to tell our parents. These days kids are so sensitised to the issue they are apt to trade on the hysteria. Lots of false allegations. A lot of well meaning adults it would never occur to them it could be an issue. Take home message; If you are dealing with kiddies make sure you are seen to be above reproach.
