This week marked the demise of Yvonne Craig, known not only for her portrayal of Batgirl on the 1960s Batman series but (perhaps more widely) as the Orion Slave Girl in the original Star Trek pilot The Menagerie.

It’s also Barbara Eden’s birthday! Born in 1931, Ms. Eden was a busy actress, but she’s best remembered for her starring role as a genie found by an astronaut in I Dream of Jeannie.

    Wombat, Wombat!

    1) The original series pilot for Star Trek was called, “The Cage,” scenes from which were placed in the two-part season one episode, “The Menagerie.” The woman in question, who appeared in the guise of an Orion slave girl for a brief time, was Vina, played by Susan Oliver.

    2) Yvonne played Marta, an Orion woman, in the third season episode, “Whom Gods Destroy.”

Yvonne Craig also held bragging rights for having been in an Elvis Presley flick: “It Happened At The World’s Fair.”

I don’t know about you folks, but I’m impressed.

The NBC censors had no trouble (tribble?) at all with Ms. Eden’s cleavage, however they were aghast at the idea of showing her belly button, which was conspicuously concealed.

These days, of course, a djinn with a belly button would offend someone because djinni aren’t born and therefore never have an umbilical cord.

Not needing to procreate, I suppose they would need all that plumbing , etc. Or pants!

Barbara Eden was prohibited from baring her navel until the show was into its fourth and fifth seasons, and even then the audience only got fleeting glimpses. According to Barbara Eden, network executives and censors were unconcerned about her navel being seen until someone casually mentioned during the third season that it was occasionally visible when the waistband of her costume shifted. After that her navel was required to be covered.

This kind of nitpicking was why I didn’t go to Star Trek conventions – well, the autograph fees and charges for everything interesting didn’t help.
