Please Pray for My Brother (UPDATED)

Posted on | March 14, 2016 | 26 Comments

My older brother Kirby has a GoFundMe page:

For the third time in ten years I once again find myself sidelined and not working due to a medical issue. A blockage of the left carotid artery which must be cleared through surgery is the culprit this time. This is a dangerous condition which could cause a stroke.
The surgery isn’t half as daunting as the potential for medical bills not paid by the insurance. In the past I have underestimated the cost of hospital procedures and the double whamy of not working, even if it were just for a short while. Chalk it up to my lack of experience in such things.
Please help me meet the monetary challenge that accompanies this medical emergency. Your contribution will go to pay down the ‘unexpected’ items not covered by the health insurance and cover my expenses during my recovery. And every donation will be greatly appreciated. . . .

Everything you can give — $5, $10, $20 — will help.

UPDATE: Kirby called Tuesday night to tell me he survived the surgery. The doctor removed a large clot that “would have killed me within a year,” he said, and so we can consider that answered prayer. Kirby’s GoFundMe page has collected more than $1,200 in about 36 hours, and thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. You might want to follow Kirby on Twitter and check out his blog, Kirby in Atlanta, which is NSFW but . . .

Well, that’s Kirby. Could I tell stories about the guy? Yeah, but if I did that, he could tell stories about me, which would be unacceptable. “You have the right to remain silent,” et cetera. So if there is anything Kirby wants to tell you about his long-ago adventures in his red Mustang or his green Chevy SS, that’s up to him. Probably the statute of limitations has long since expired, but it’s not my place to judge. Kirby is now a law-abiding citizen, and a professional truck driver. Where did he develop his expertise in delivering valuable cargo? Perhaps it was the formative experience of that night he spent navigating the backroads of four counties at top speed eluding a BOLO after Cobb County P.D. lit him up on Gordon Road while he was, uh, delivering valuable cargo.

Allegedly, I hasten to add. The story of how Kirby escaped in a harrowing 120-mph run — via Lower River Road into Douglas County to cross the Chattahoochee into Fulton County at the U.S. 92 bridge, then traveling south and returning home to Douglasville via Whitesburg — might be entirely fictional, as far as you know. And as for anyone who said Kirby ran because he had just picked up five pounds of Columbian sinsemilla that night, well, how dare you allege such a thing? The man is a veteran of the 101st Airborne, after all — a law-abiding citizen and grandfather now.

Jumping out of C-130s is certainly not the most dangerous thing Kirby ever survived, but those are his stories to tell, and not mine. Thank God for sparing Kirby’s life so he can keep telling stories. We can pray he will soon be back to delivering valuable cargo. It’s in his blood.

The GoFundMe goal is $5,000 and every dollar helps. Thanks.

Sending prayers for now, a donation as soon as I can. Please, don’t delay on the surgery for any reason. It’s very fortunate that the blockage was diagnosed. My husbands was not and he had the stroke which left him left side disabled. Even after the surgery there will be life time expensive medication to afford and he should be on some of them now. Take Care.

‘Twas easier to send it to your tip jar; the donation is specified as being for your brother.

Thanks everyone. I’m resting tonight after surgery today and will spend at least 10 days recovering. This blockage would likely have killed or crippled me in a year. That pill Bottle cap is about two inches in diameter.

Thanks to everyone for the support. I couldn’t feel more loved right night. I will continue to update you on my recovery and, of course, the bills will keep pouring in and it may be a while before I know the full scope. Thank you for the support and thank God for letting this old sinner see another sunset.

This is a silent killer and I never knew about it. I felt great.Well, I got a second chance and I’ve had the surgery and seemed to escape the horrific dangers of a massive stroke. Everyone reading this post should ask their doctor to listen for brewing in the carotid arteries.

Thanks. Mrs. Other McCain keeps pointing to this enormous bill from the electric company — a delayed cost of our local blizzard, since we have electric heating — and I have no idea how I’ll pay it, but we must have our priorties: Help Kirby now.
