Quit Picking On Bono!

This insistance that Bono and U2 are somehow bad just because they are dodging Irish taxes on their music publishing is way offbase. Points to remember about about Holy Progress:

  • Hypocrisy is supposed to be an art form. Dodging taxes is a spiritual activity that should be undertaken from bloody Monday to Sunday Bloody Sunday.
  • Nihilism means that you’re not supposed to pay attention to individuals. Assimilation into the State, Umma, or both means that we now love our neighbor by State proxy; it’s no longer an individual requirement.
  • Bono was spot on in ‘The Wanderer‘ when he observed (and the Man in Black sang)

    I stopped outside a church-house
Where the citizens like to sit
They say they want the Kingdom
But they don’t wat God in it.

Blowing off taxes is totally in keeping with the commitment to depravity that must follow a rejection of individual responsibility.

I, for one, think that U2 has improved with age, starting with Achtung Baby. Bono is never better than when he’s answering the question “What if Solomon had been in a rock’n’roll band?” Give me that cynical burnout stuff, man. It helps one understand so much of the current world situation.
