Herman Cain Rhymes With Hurricane: Fund-Raising Surges in Third Quarter

Posted on | October 1, 2011 | 35 Comments

The buzz coming from the Herman Cain campaign is that they will be the only presidential campaign — including Obama and GOP front-runner Mitt Romney — whose third-quarter fund-raising numbers are better than their second-quarter numbers. (A quarter-to-quarter comparison is not possible for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who did not launch his campaign until midway through the third quarter.)

Cain raised slightly more than $2 million in the second quarter, according to official FEC reports, and the Atlanta businessman’s campaign had been heading toward a disappointing third-quarter result until experiencing a powerful surge in late September. Cain’s strong performance in debates Sept. 12 in Tampa and Sept. 22 in Orlando, followed by his shocking upset win in the Sept. 24 Florida GOP straw poll, ignited a massive influx of online contributions.

Most of Cain’s third-quarter total will be from small donors (less than $200), and more than $1 million of the quarterly total will have been raised in the last 10 days of September. Traffic to Cain’s Web page at times has been so heavy that several supporters have left comments on the candidate’s Facebook page in recent days complaining that they can’t get through to make online donations. While the campaign was coping with the phenomenal surge, a fund-raising e-mail sent Friday to Cain’s supporters boasted of the candidate’s success in attracting small donors.

“Other candidates are raising thousands of dollars from a few people. Herman Cain is raising a few dollars from thousands of people,” consultant Brad Marston wrote in the e-mail (full text below) sent shortly before last night’s midnight deadline for the second-quarter FEC report.

Cain’s appearance late Friday on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno will likely help carry over his third-quarter momentum into October. The next major event for in the see-saw GOP campaign is an Oct. 18 debate in Las Vegas, sponsored by the Western Republican Leadership Conference and televised on CNN.

TEXT OF CAIN FUND-RAISING E-MAIL

Subject: Herman Cain – What a week we’re having!
September 30, 2011
Dear [NAME] —
What a week we are having! After Mr. Cain’s great performance at the Fox News Debate, his impressive win at the Florida P5 Straw Poll and news reports showing he is clearly in the top tier of candidates, he is having his best fundraising week ever!
But we’re not done yet! The 3rd Quarter fundraising deadline is only hours away!
President Obama, Mitt Romney and other candidates are playing the expectations game, saying they will raise less money than last quarter. Herman Cain doesn’t play games. He works for and expects success!
This is the final Five Dollar Friday for the quarter. Please join me in donating at least $5 to Herman Cain today!
Other candidates are raising thousands of dollars from a few people. Herman Cain is raising a few dollars from thousands of people who like you, support his Common Sense Solutions! In fact, we are within 1500 donations of having MORE donors than last quarter and quite possibly EXCEEDING our past fundraising totals!
If you have donated recently or simply can’t afford another donation in these challenging economic times, please consider forwarding this email to your friends and family.
Thank you.

I like Herman Cain as a candidate and would gladly vote for him. I’m glad that people are giving, but he could not possibly compete with Obama in fundraising, so he’ll have to win support in other ways than traditional marketing.

FS: When you say Cain “could not possibly compete,” it’s like saying he “could not possibly” defeat Rick Perry in Florida, or he “could not possibly” survive cancer.

It’s kinda funny how Herman keeps doing things he “could not possibly” do.

I always thought Cain had the ability to come ahead of  Perry; Perry is tongue tied and bad in debates. It’s just that Obama has a huge fund raising advantage and as the 2008 election showed to anyone who paid attention, he can raise money illegally but turning off the security features on his webiste. I just think it’s better to realistic about things. I will support Cain and I will work for him but even getting him TO the nomination will be a huge uphill battle because the RINOs and establishment don’t like him.

Third quarter doesn’t really give Cain a whole quarter because his turning points came so late, so he might have a very good fourth quarter, too.

No one ever raises as much as the incumbent – even when they used the federal money, the incumbent always had tons more “party ‘n’ PAC” money to play with.  Even though Obama is losing support all the time, there are those who will see contributing to him or raising money for him as a good gamble.  Incumbents do usually win a second term, and it is obvious he pays off those who donate to him – the unions, Solyndra, etc.

hummm this artical is not correct. I just read on another artical that Ron Paul will be most likley the only one who raised more in the 3rd quarter than the second. Why would this be being lied about?

It will be quite the uphill battle because the Left will pull-out all the stops.  I take satisfaction in the knowledge that a Sarah Palin or a Herman Cain have the ability to make the money raised less important.

    Good job dude.

You realize a good number of Ron Paul supporters had Cain as their 2nd choice because he isn’t a politician? You and Cain himself alienating them is not the best idea in the world.

Cain has been bottom tier for months while Ron was 3rd, Cain wins one straw poll (while Ron has won loads, more recently NH and California), and all of a sudden he is a serious candidate and top tier? No. Even after Cain’s recent Straw Poll win, Ron is still polling ahead of Cain in Florida.

And did you forget that you’re not going win your candidate any votes by being snotty and condescending, either?

Win one straw poll, get a big head!

  28. AngelaTC

Sure, but looking at the polls, it seems that Cain is taking votes away from Perry but not Romney.  Which  makes him this season’s Huckabee, meaning he’s apparently the candidate most likely to end up with a talk show on Fox.

Amazing what a little cheating at the FL straw poll can accomplish, eh?  It helps when you’re part of the New World Order clan like Cain is. No sweat.

  30. Daniel Gill
    October 5th, 2011 @ 2:30 pm

Brad – You do realize that Cain has been near the bottom of every poll until just recently, right? You also realize Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry where once “the chosen ones” of the Republican field of candidates by the MSM, right? Cain’s campaign will falter as those before him.

His 9-9-9 plan doesn’t seem to take into account that a Constitutional Amendment would be necessary to prevent Congress from increasing those 9’s to 15’s. His flip-flopping over the President ordering the murder of US citizens makes him seem just like Romney (FYI – That is not a good thing).

Some of Cain’s ideas sound good, but he lacks a thorough understanding of the Constitution (as does much of Congress) to be able to successfully uphold any oath to defend it.

even with just the 9-9-9 do the math and it comes out to about a .5% increase in tax to the federal gov’t because the last 9% is on top of the base and the first 18% … like most politicians he sounds great until you look at more than just the slogans

Herman Cain is just going to be the next GOP candidate to shoot up, then quickly flame out. Remember when Michelle Bachmann was top tier, polling around 20%? Now she’s more around 4%.  Remember when Perry was a sure thing at well over 30% in many polls? He’s now getting half that much support and is falling fast as people actually start to listen to what he say and learn what he believes.  Herman Cain is the next one.  People will soon figure out that he doesn’t really know what he’s doing and beyond saying “9-9-9” and delivering well-timed one-liners.

And out of all this, I’ll be surprised if he end up with close to half the fundraising of Ron Paul this quarter. This article is kind of funny because it was released after Ron Paul’s campaign said that he’d raised at least $5 million in Q3, over half a million more than Q2.  So already, there was another campaign that improved their fundraising.  Now Ron Paul’s haul is almost certain to dwarf Cain’s numbers.

People call Ron Paul supporters unrealistic, but he has a real path to the nomination, whereas Cain doesn’t. Show me a GOP nominee in the last 25 years who finished outside the top 3 in Iowa AND New Hampshire. Ron Paul is generally considered to be 2nd in Iowa right now, with his chances rising as Perry’s fall, and a strong second to Romney in New Hampshire. Cain? He’ll be lucky to make the top 4 in either state. Sorry, but you just can’t recover from that, especially when he isn’t raising big money. Even if you are raising big money, you have to perform well in one of the first two states (ask Rudy).  Cain is just another flash in the pan.

That’s not true at all…Ron Paul had 100,000 some odd donors raise, 8 million dollars for him this past quarter.  http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/05/paul-raises-8-million-from-more-than-100000-donors/Certainly, some actually do give a feck.  Also, let’s not go discounting our military personnel as not being sane, after all, they have given more to his campaign than all other candidates combined!  http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/9044-ron-paul-campaign-receive-most-military-donations  I will stick to sanity, truth, and the constitution.  Dr. Ron Paul for president.
