But not so horrified that they’ll stop doing it. Perhaps a more accurate word than “horrified” would be “apathetic”, or maybe even “pleased”. And we’re no better.
During the Cold War, it was fairly common for the Soviets to place sleeper agents within the US. This usually required years, if not decades, of patience to plant and nurture the agent and allow them to blend innocuously with their neighbors, before there would be a payoff. Today they can wander over the border, openly declare their communist/jihadist beliefs and proactively agitate without any need to hide.
And it’s working so well that we’re following their example.
Now they don’t have to ”place” the agents. We let hundreds of thousands of them in. The enemy then recruits what it can. Even if they’re only successful !% of the time, that’s thousands of operatives and helpers.
I’m just A Martel, but who knows? That family took seriously the verse about “be fruitful and multiply.”

People who can’t hack it in the free world get sent home.
Newbies who pass the smell test get a one year grace period to learn the rules (ie., your life is your responsibility, nothing is free including freedom, other peoples’ money/stuff/lives are not “yours,” you can think or say pretty much whatever you want and so can everyone else, etc. etc.)
Employed/off the dole/self-supporting, with no criminal activity, within a year or back you go.

Those are great ideas, and every decent person would back them. But the filthy rich and their lickspittle lapdog politicians disagree, because their raison d’etre is causing us extensive misery. (And I could justify that Biblically, too, interestingly.)
The establishment politicians and their cronies only want these people for votes and cheap labor, and to take the heat off the politicians and rich cronies in the nations of origin. They don’t care about those 10s of thousands of children that suddenly, magically just showed up here last year. That was all planned by the governments in question, including ours, who cared not at all that those children had to travel through treacherous conditions to get here, and then got farmed out to “relatives” once they arrived. The pols just want those anchor babies. And we’re the bad, greedy, selfish people for wanting to stem the tide.
If only conservatives could get that message out.
And, yes, I realize a lot of them weren’t actually children, per se. But a lot of them were. Collateral damage. Whatever. I’m sure the INTENTIONS were all GOOD.
A significant number of them are gang members who perpetrate the violence those ”children” were supposed to be fleeing.
