The #NYFLC2015 Agenda

Posted on | March 22, 2015 | 15 Comments

OK, I previously included excerpts of this extraordinarily queer program from the National Young Feminist Leadership Conference. Now I have uploaded the full document:

#NYFLC2015 Feminist Conference Agenda

As I said previously, I must apologize for the low quality of this scan because the Feminist Majority Agenda didn’t list the panel descriptions or name the participants on their web site. This was scanned using a smartphone by a person who deserves credit, but until that person grants me permission to credit them, I’m protecting my source from the Feminist Wrath Brigades.

Now, here’s where I need help from readers: Go through the list of speakers and identify (in the comments) every speaker who identifies as “queer,” “lesbian,” “trans,” LGBT, etc. Just a list of names will do, but if somebody could count them and then calculate what percentage of the speakers were self-identified weirdos, that would be helpful, too. Links to online biographies of the speakers would be an extra bonus.

Is this like one of those “guess the number of jelly beans in the jar” games? If so, my guess is “All of them.”

Interesting that a “Silver Level Sponsor” of this conference is the Population Connection Action Fund. According to its’ website is affiliated with Population Connection which according to Wikipedia is
“a 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington D.C., United States that attempts to stop what they believe is an unsustainable rate of world population growth. The organization was founded as Zero Population Growth in 1968 by Paul R. Ehrlich, Richard Bowers, and Charles Remington, in the wake of the impact from Ehrlich’s best-selling book, The Population Bomb. They adopted their current name in 2002.”
TL;DR version: if Malthusians are funding your “revolution”, you might want to check your premises

Wow, kilo, you’re a nerd. And I respect that.

To steal a joke from P.J. O’Rourke about Ehrlich et al., it’s “Not enough of me; way too much of you.”

I just imagined our esteemed host strolling to the podium of the above conference and receiving a reaction similar to that below:

Stacy, I’m going to email you my finding in a spreadsheet. My results are below. Note that only 2-3 were, by their own admission off-the-charts weirdos. However, I was able to take a count of full-on weirdos by the types of organizations the person was involved with and/or documentaries and/or blog involvement (say, autostraddle, for instance.) Then I took at count of in-the-closet weirdos who are trying to be professional about their weirdism, but they’re not fooling me and they won’t fool you either. And finally, there’s a third category of people who are either insane Dems or going to this thing as a work avoidance technique.

Total number of speech/moderation/workshop line items = 167

Total number of unique full-on weirdos = 48
    % of unique weirdo discussions/moderations = 43%
    % of total weirdo discussions/moderations = 49%

Total number of unique in-the-closet weirdos = 51
    % of unique closeted weirdo discussions/moderations = 46%
    % of total closeted weirdo discussions/moderations = 42%

Total number of unique insane Dems/work avoidance = 13
    % of unique insane Dem/work avoidance disc/moderations = 12%

    % of total insane Dem/work avoidance disc/moderations = 8%

From this we can see that the full-on freaks participated more fully in the weirdo forums/workshops.

I tried a spreadsheet and gave up since the data was too multi-dimensional. I’m working on a database, which is going slowly since my skills are rusty, which just means that I need the practice. 😉

I thought about that, but I didn’t want to make a job of it. The worst part was keying all the data in. Then categorizing it, when the category boundaries were unclear.

“Weirdos” is too unspecific a term; might I suggest that “mentally ill” would be more accurate?

For the record, let us specify that anyone who is not heterosexual and does not mentally identify as the sex physically presented by his genitals is mentally ill.

“Don’t move, or the white cishet shitlord gets it!”? Nah, it would never work in that crowd.

NYFL? That’s a thing, like a real thing? Or just like wormholes and unicorns?
