Can We At Least Agree That Nobody — and Certainly No Republican — Cares About Hunter Biden’s ‘Struggle’?

Today I was watching CNN (so you don’t have to) while the World’s Most Famous Crackhead gave his little speech on Capitol Hill:

Hunter stated: “They have ridiculed my struggle with addiction. They’ve belittled my recovery. And they’ve tried to dehumanize me!”
“They have tried to dehumanize me to embarrass and damage my father, who has devoted his entire life to public service,” Hunter Biden said. “For six years I have been the target of the unrelenting Trump attack machine shouting ‘Where’ Hunter?’ Well here’s my answer. I am here.”
“Let me state as clearly as I can; my father was not financially involved in my business, not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home or abroad and certainly not as an artist,” he said. “I am here to testify at a public hearing today to answer any of the Committee’s legitimate questions.”
“In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances, but to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond absurd. It’s shameless. There’s no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen,” he said.

The overpaid idiot anchors for CNN — overpaid, because almost nobody watches their network — did nothing to push back against this dramatic nonsense about Hunter’s “struggle with addiction,” which is irrelevant to the congressional investigation, except that it is reasonable to ask why so many foreign clients were eager to give millions of dollars to a ne’er-do-well crackhead whose only qualification as a “consultant” was that his father happened to be Vice President of the United States at the time.

Of course, Hunter has inherited his father’s habitual dishonesty — “My Word as a Biden!” — and was obviously lying about his father being “not financially involved,” as everybody ought to know by now:

Hunter Biden made clear during a press conference Wednesday that he will only testify under his own rules and will not comply with House investigators’ lawful subpoena that compelled his testimony behind closed doors at 9:30 a.m. the same day.
Hunter Biden’s failure to appear before House investigators will likely be a factor in formalizing the House impeachment inquiry vote Wednesday evening regarding President Joe Biden’s involvement in the Biden family business.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) pointed to six cases of mounting evidence on Tuesday against Joe Biden that “cannot be ignored”:

1. Biden family members and Biden business-linked entities received more than $15 million from individuals in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, and China.
2. Joe Biden spoke with Hunter Biden’s business associates at least 22 times.
3. Joe Biden lied about his involvement in the business.
4. Joe Biden received “direct monthly payments” from Hunter Biden’s “Owasco PC” business account, which received “payments from Chinese state-linked companies and other foreign nationals and companies.”
5. Investigators flagged the Justice Department’s “deviations” in the five-year investigation into Hunter Biden.
6./ An FBI FD-1023 form alleges Joe Biden accepted a $5 million bribe while vice president. . . .

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) previously threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress if he did not comply with both a public and private interview.

Hunter Biden and his spin doctors on CNN apparently expect us to forget about this rather important piece of evidence:

So far as I’m aware, CNN has never even mentioned that, so that their audience has no clue of just how clear the evidence is about Joe Biden personally profiting from his son’s foreign bribery scheme.

Rather than to emulate the kind of disingenuous games that Hunter is playing — “Those mean Republicans are dehumanizing me!” — I will explain exactly why the GOP-controlled House committees want to have a “closed door” interview with Hunter, and it’s not because they’re trying to hide anything. What they want is to have him provide a sworn deposition, which they will then use as a basis for questioning him when he is called to testify publicly to the committee. The perjury trap, you see.

Everybody on Capitol Hill knows how this game is played: You get the witnesses on record, under oath, in a private deposition and, if you then think you can prove that they’ve lied in their deposition, you call them up in a public hearing and confront them with the evidence, citing their deposition and pointing out the discrepancy between what they previously said under oath, demanding that they tell the truth now.

This kind of thing provides headline-making drama, and quite naturally, Hunter Biden doesn’t want to be part of it, so he is . . . Well, he’s defying a subpoena in contempt of Congress, is what he’s doing. But whereas CNN would be in 24/7 BREAKING NEWS mode if anyone connected to Trump had done this, they treated it as if complying with a congressional subpoena is optional when the Republicans are in charge.

The Republicans in charge are very serious:

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) made the following statement after Hunter Biden failed to appear for his deposition:
“Hunter Biden today defied lawful subpoenas and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings. We will not provide special treatment because his last name is Biden. As our committees were today prepared to depose Hunter Biden, he chose to make a public statement on Capitol Hill instead where he said his father, Joe Biden was not financially involved in his family’s business dealings. Exactly how was Joe Biden involved? Evidence shows Joe Biden met with Hunter’s business associates and his name was at the center of the family business strategy.
“Today, the House will vote on an impeachment inquiry resolution to strengthen our legal case in the courts as we face obstruction from the White House and witnesses. Today’s obstruction by Hunter Biden reinforces the need for a formal vote. President Biden and his family must be held accountable for their corruption and obstruction. And we will provide that to the American people.”
A deposition is a standard investigative procedure used by attorneys and congressional investigators. Democrats have used depositions in their investigations, including the Adam Schiff impeachment inquiry. Even Jamie Raskin emphasized the importance of depositions.

Have we forgotten what happened when Steve Bannon didn’t want to comply with the J6 Committee’s subpoena? Anyway, I owe Ace of Spades some serious hat-tipping for this, so go read his reaction.
