Diverging From Allahpundit On The Military Record Question

Allahpundit reviews the new Joe Miller ad:
and poses the question

How about some ads instead touting his military service and highlighting the sleazy performance of She Who Shall Not Be Named at the last debate? Or is that what he’s bringing Palin in for — to emphasize his service credentials as a proud military mom?

My sense, irrespective of specific legal requirements about referencing rank, is that:

  • John McCain sort of wore out the ‘vote for my service record’ card,
  • Incumbents, like Jim Moran (D-iVA), like to imply that uniformed service implies lack of proven track record for elected office, and
  • While tested mettle under fire makes great backdrop, the opposition can frequently drum up some putz to disparage you.

In the main, the service record is perhaps better held in reserve for the candidate, unless you’re sporting the blue medal with the stars on the ribbon.
