Monumental Greatness

Posted on | March 12, 2010 | 25 Comments

Smitty has not yet been honored with his own equestrian statue in D.C., but it’s probably just a matter of time. If the federal government wants to “save or create” some more jobs, maybe we can get an earmark for the Smitty Monument to stimulate the equestrian statue industry, which has been devastated by the recession . . .

Of course, the feds could save money by funding an equestrian statue of Harry Reid — a 50% discount, because the sculptor would only need to depict one end of the horse.

(BONUS TRIVIA: Which general is depicted in this superb monument, and where is it located?)

A capital idea for the capital! Mr. Tenth Amendment deserves one. Where can I donate to the statue fund?

[And don’t you dare provide a link to your own tip jar.]

“one end of the horse” Heh. Good one!
I can’t tell whose statue that is, but it appears he was wounded in battle.

Great picture! That’s the statue of Lt. General Winfield Scott Hancock on Pennsylvania Avenue. I can’t remember the cross street but it’s near the Navy Archives.

I’ll take a crack at it. Is it Grant’s statue with him riding “Cincinnati”??

That’s me traveling via horseback to the store when gas was 4 bucks a gallon a short time ago. The statue is in front of EPA HQ.

The cool and confusing thing is that there’s also a statue to Winfield Scott (no Hancock) in DC, too!

FYI, proof, the mounted statues in DC don’t always follow the “one hoof, two hoof, no hoof” rules for statues. I don’t know why.
