Liberals Spinning S&P Credit Downgrade: BLAME IT ON THE REPUBLICANS!

Posted on | August 7, 2011 | 39 Comments

Nothing is more amazing than the ability of liberals — both politicians and “journalists” — to synchronize their lies. In the wake of Standard & Poors downgrading of the U.S. credit rating Friday, the Democrat-Media Complex has now forged a consensus that this had nothing to do with massive two-year binge of deficit spending embarked on by President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. No, it’s because Republicans and their Tea Party supporters are against tax increases:

Hartmann’s column, especially, illustrates how these left-wing agitprop campaigns work: The “Mainstream Media” ignore a million and one things that conservatives wish they’d pay attention to, but when liberals accuse reporters of ignoring something, the reporters — who are, of course, nearly all liberal — will jump to correct the perceived omission and will, in fact, often harp on this “unreported” angle to the exclusion of everything else.

Let us stipulate that (a) U.S. fiscal health wasn’t exactly robust when Obama became president, and (b) in a time of fiscal crisis, a steadfast opposition to tax increases doesn’t soothe the worries of the bond market, yet still the fact remains that the immediate cause of the current crisis was the incredible two-year Obama/Pelosi/Reid deficit spending binge. And Obama’s response to the debt-ceiling impasse — tax the rich! millionaires and billionaires! corporate jets! Republicans are coming to steal Granny’s Social Security check! — was immature, selfish and harmful.

Democrats don’t want to fix the problem, they want to score political points against Republicans. And they expect their liberal friends in the media to help them do it — a perfectly realistic expectation, given the fact that Barack Obama could only have become president with the willing assistance of his liberal friends in the media, who more or less anoninted him as the Democratic nominee the day he beat Hillary in the Iowa caucuses.

I’d imagine even some liberal reporters are now experiencing buyer’s remorse and — despite their profound instinctive loathing of Republicans — are sick and tired of watching Obama scapegoat others for his own incompetence.

Liberals hate Republicans and most reporters don’t know jack shit about economics, but they know failure when they see it, and Obama has proven to be an outright failure as president. One of these days, and the day might come very soon, reporters will start ignoring the White House spin machine and start reporting the truth. And then liberals will bitch, bitch, bitch about the “right-wing bias” of the media.

There were rumors flying around the internet that Obama negotiated a “blame the GOP” talking point with S&P.

Yep, as sure as God made little green apples, the Liberal media will start distancing themselves from Obama, unless of course, they have their heads stuck so far up their asses, there’s no hope of pulling out.

Not far off the mark. The “$2 trillion error” screwed up their timing. First by presenting (in Timmy’s mind) the slim possibility that S&P might change it’s mind. The downgrade presented two villains the evil capitalist, derivatives endorsing rating agency and the Koch Bro financed Tea Party Freedom Fighters. Their hysteria has regained it’s equilibrium thus they will leave bashing the rating agencies to the Europeans. They can now concentrate on criminalizing conservative opinion and it proponents as they develop a final solution.

Since these Koch Bros are so damn wealthy and influential I’d damn sure like to see them put that money to work. Why not fund an all-conservative cable station. It don’t have to be all news, it can be a mix of news, sports and entertainment. As long as they didn’t do this shit Fox does with the “fair and balanced” crap they’d kick ass and make their investment back in no time.

It would be nice to be able to see conservatives give their point of view and explain it in a way that would give the average person more than a few recycled sound bites, and not have to put up with the liberal assholes giving their Soros approved point of view.

Wait a minute, Barak Obama, the first black president, has caused our credit rating to go to hell. Am I the only one that sees the irony? See these Democrats are so used to Affirmative Action and the CRA they never stopped to think there might not be a law they could use to punish S&P for racism. I guess the only thing left is to blame the GOP, of course.

I haven’t clicked on a link to a Benen piece in at least two years. Before then, I stumbled onto a few of his articles and I was awestruck by the immense, unfathomable magnitude of that p.o.s.’s hackery.

I make an effort to read some of the more SERIOUS stuff from the left, but if I were going to read nasty little kiddies like Benen, I might as well waste precious time scrolling the pre-pubescent rants on Daily Kos. As it is, I could never keep up with all the noteworthy stuff that is written by ADULTS, including by dangerous leftists.

The Left has to spin this because if people accept that we need to cut spending to avoid financial
Armageddon, there is no case for re-electing Obama.
Obama is spender, not a budget cutter. Electing a spender may have seemed like a
good idea during the recession of 2007-2009. (It turned out that
Keynesian fiscal policy was less effective than its proponents claimed, but a lot of people expected it to work well.) But it is insanity to elect a spender when the budget is out
of control and the credibility of our debt is in question. In a little
more than a year we will learn if this country is insane or not.

“Let us stipulate that (a) U.S. fiscal health wasn’t exactly robust when Obama became president,”

No, let’s not. It completely ignores the fact that the Copperheads had two years in control of the Congress (you know, where the money was spent) to run the deficit up, as this chart makes perfectly clear.

There’s a great big hole in the Obama spin that it’s the Tea Party’s fault.  First of all, there never was a Democratic plan or budget bill to deal with it since they took over Congress in 2007 or the White House in 2008.  Obama wanted a “clean bill” debt hike without any restricting cuts.  S&P was very clear nothing short of $4-5 trillion in real reduction over the ten-year budget window would have been a sufficient “down payment’ on fiscal sanity to save our rating.

But the real problem is there is nowhere to get $2.5 trillion in new revenue over that period.  Confiscate every penny of every millionaire in the country, you still can’t come up with that kind of money.  The “corporate jet tax break” Obama mentioned over and over and over would have covered seven weeks of his deficits – after we collected it for 7000 years.

The numbers do not add up.

Let us stipulate that (a) the U.S. doesn’t deserve a AAA bond rating at the present time, and (b) the S&P downgrade serves as an objective message that the U.S. has to stop borrowing so much.

Which is why the Democrats are so mad. They know its going to be next to impossible now to borrow more money to bribe spend. China has already told us to “live within our means”. Just another of a long string of embarrassments the Democrats and Obama has subjected us to. Can you imagine the reaction from the Chinese if they were criticized so openly and bluntly on the world stage. It would be tantamount to a declaration of war if someone humiliated them like that publicly. That just goes to show you exactly in how little regard they hold us.

Seriously?  W and the 2001 – 2007 GOP controlled Congress (GOP had majorities in the House and Senate) passed 2 unfunded tax cuts, 2 unfunded Wars and an unfunded Medicare prescription Drug Bill.

Here is the detailed breakdown of who has contributed what to the Debt, beyond Reagan tripling it and W doubling it…

    http://www.boston.com/news/politics/articles/2011/07/31/the_debt_crisis/

We are where we are today because partisan, immature idiots like yourself watched the GOP drive the truck over the cliff and then did everything possible after the steering wheel was handed to Obama to ensure his failure…

No more symbolic representation of the Right’s anger at “one of them” getting elected President, than Joe Wilson screaming “You Lie” to our President during his State of the Union.

Until we can put Country before partisanship and get back to the fiscal responsibility shown under Clinton, we will continue to have these fringe people on the Right driving our discourse.

  29. mark devoe

SDN, the Democrats took control of Congress Jan 3, 2007.  The Recession began in the 3rd Quarter of 2007!  W’s last budget, which included a $1.3T deficit was submitted Oct 2008, a month before Obama was even elected!  The day Obama took office, the US debt was $11T and we were over a year into the worst recession in our lifetimes!

As for what contributes to the US debt?  The 3 major drivers to our debt increase are 1) 2001 and 2003 W tax breaks 2) 2 Unfunded wars and 3) 2003 unfunded Medicare prescription drug bill!  We had a balanced budget in 1999 and 2000 prior to W.

    http://www.boston.com/news/politics/articles/2011/07/31/the_debt_crisis/

All your graph shows is the Debt increasing, while not showing what drives those increases!  I can spend $10 today on my credit card and if not paid off at the end of the month, I’ll pay some interest…But nowhere near what I’ll pay on the $10,000 I’m carrying as balance on my card!

Why not post the CBO Debt projections from 2000 – 2010?  The CBO projected a $5T SURPLUS if W and the GOP Congress stayed the on the spending and tax path laid out under Clinton.

Instead, W came into office and he and the GOP Congress went on a spending tear, while reducing revenues!  F-CK even W’s own Treasury Secretary and his own appointed Economic advisory council opposed his 2003 tax cut for the wealthy!  Because it would “Add to the debt and increase an already expanding income disparity.”

  37. Anonymous

Oh, Mr. devoe, does he lie to us? let us count the ways:

    1. “SDN, the Democrats took control of Congress Jan 3, 2007.  The Recession began in the 3rd Quarter of 2007! ”

As if it wasn’t absolutely clear to the business community which way the wind was blowing. Copperheads don’t plan for the future; they don’t have to make a profit. In addition, of course, the 3rd quarter begins in July, which on the calendar of this planet comes after January. What color is the sky on yours?

    2. As for Copperheads and Congress: Clinton’s “surpluses” were the result of Republicans taking over in 1994 and refusing to implement Clintoncare, forcing Bubba to sign welfare reform, and reining in the nastier excesses of the regulatory state.

    3. Ah yes, unfunded wars. Well, let’s start with the fact that those wars should have been fought in the 1990s; after all, President Clinton even passed a law saying that invading Iraq was a good idea. But Copperheads only destroy America, not defend her.

Then of course, there’s this inconvenient fact:

“Congressional Budget Office numbers show that the total cost of the
eight-year war was less than the stimulus bill passed by the
Democratic-led Congress in 2009. According to CBO numbers in its Budget and Economic Outlook published
this month, the cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom was $709 billion for
military and related activities, including training of Iraqi forces and
    diplomatic operations.Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/08/30/cbo-years-iraq-war-cost-stimulus-act/#ixzz1UVhxVI2g

I note that every source for your chart is either an Obama Cabinet Department or a Leftist think-tank. Not much bias, oh my no.

    3. Unfunded tax cuts? In the first place, refraining from stealing is not unfunded. And, of course, Bush’s tax cuts led, as I showed, to a decrease in the deficit until  Copperheads took over and started spending the money. You do remember enough civics to realize that Congress spends money in our government? Let’s not forget that Bush’s “tax cut spending” led to 4.5% unemployment. Copperhead stimulus poison? 9.1% “official”.

In short, you have learned well from your liar of a President. Slither back to Kos before I load more snakeshot.
