Boehner: Obama ‘Picking a Fight Where One Doesn’t Exist’ on Student Loans

Posted on | April 29, 2012 | 10 Comments

“No one wants student loan interest rates to go up,” House Speaker John Boehner told Candy Crowley in an interview aired today on CNN’s State of the Union. “For the president to politicize this for his own re-election is picking a fight where one doesn’t exist.”

Boehner pointed out that President Obama signed “the payroll tax cut, that included $4 billion worth of reductions in this same program,” and that the administration’s own budget proposal calls for reductions in the student-loan program. Here’s video:

I for one disagree with Speaker Boehner.  Student loans are horribly, ridiculously below market low, which in turn causes a host of other issues which create debt on all levels.
In fact, I don’t think the government should be in the business of guaranteeing student loans, period (perhaps if private loans were the law of the day then the loan rates could be cut, but it would be market forces and reasonable assurance of payoff driving them down).

…and I’m really angry that everyone (or very, very few) in politicianland and the press refuses to talk the truth rather than engage in identity politics pander!

I swear: I’m ready to write in cartoon characters on my ballot this year; this is ridiculous.

Didn’t I read somewhere that the president was planning on revenue from student loans to help fund Obamacare? So, am I to gather that he’s going to toss funding around like a hot potato to drive wedges wherever he thinks they need to be driven politically?

I read something to that effect too — it’s a ridiculous and unworkable proposition of course.  I think it was one of those push me pull you wranglings that he likes to throw out there to get people riled up (it is truly his one great gift — he can incite the mob better than most).

Once the government lends you money, it owns your ass.  Once it owns your ass, it owns your vote.

I think Boehner meant to say, “Obama’s picking a fight where a fighter doesn’t exist, since he’s starting to waffle on citing Holder again.

Taking over college loans in order to count the interest as revenue was one of the many financial prestidigitation’s used to bring Obamskycare in at under a trillion. The interest rate has to go up to make the ten year numbers “score correctly” of course none of that matters now. The take over of student loan is part of Obamsky care. If the Court strikes down the whole law and if the administration doesn’t just ignore the ruling this will be one of the many aspects of the great unraveling. Since no one yet understands what is in the law completely undoing it will take years. Little bits and pieces of it will keep “popping up” for decades as the bureaucracy keeps rolling on autopilot.

All these subsidies and guarantees have been tried in one form or another for DECADES, and they have NEVER resulted in lowering anyone’s costs of going to college.  Whenever the feds slip in a new subsidy or grant or guarantee program, colleges raise their tuition and fees to absorb the extra largesse.

ALL these programs do is make college MORE expensive and put the taxpayer on the hook for bad loans and bad education.  Society is NOT served by more tenured Gender Studies faculty.

Reason # 5684 why the federal government has NO business in education.
