Epic New Failure: DailyKos Re-Banishes Deranged Cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt

Bill Schmalfeldt: Victim of a right-wing smear job?

“Attempting to convince a madman that he is out of his mind is a hopeless task . . .”
— Robert Stacy McCain, June 16

Bill Schmalfeldt can never seem to comprehend that the main cause — if not the only cause — of his problems is Bill Schmalfeldt.

Let us agree that a troll must cross a high threshold of obnoxiousness to be deemed Too Disgusting for Daily Kos, yet Schmalfeldt cleared the mark with surprising ease, thanks to his extraordinarily perverse discourse about butt sex. (C’mon, click this link. Double-dog dare ya.)

Banned from DKos in May 2012 as “Bill Schmalfeldt,” he attempted to return to DKos as “Patriot Ombudsman,” reposting something tedious he had published elsewhere about his legal battle with John Hoge. Schmalfeldt prefaced this weird tale (referring to himself in third-person) by describing it as a “story of a reputation ruined beyond repair by right wing nut jobs for no reason other than they wanted to.” Schmalfeldt claimed to be the victim of “a coordinated smear attack by the blowflies that buzz around the dessicated corpse of Andrew Breitbart.” And he included a screen-cap of my July 12 post, “Deranged Cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt Inspires Epic ‘Downfall’ Parody Video.”

What he was attempting to do, as any psychologist would recognize, is blame-shifting: Bill is not responsible for the bad thing that happened; Bill is a helpless victim of what they did to him. (For those not familiar with mental health problems, it may help to read about “Locus of Control,” and also to understand that a disturbance in the sense of agency is typical of schizophrenia.)

Only examination by a trained clinical specialist, of course, could determine if Bill Schmalfeldt is suffering from mental illness, but you don’t need a Ph.D. to conclude that he is nuts, wacko, berserk, demented, zany, bonkers, batshit crazy and cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.

Insofar as Bill Schmalfeldt had his “reputation ruined,” it was he who ruined it, not any “right wing nut jobs.” There were no “coordinated smear attacks,” but merely a series of responses to Schmalfeldt’s own obnoxious actions. If Schmalfeldt imagined that he could insult, disparage and harass others without the targets of these attacks ever reacting to defend themselves, well, he’s crazy.

But I think we’ve already established that, eh?

The origins and history of this episode are easily determined. On June 3, 2012, four days after Brett Kimberlin had Aaron Walker briefly arrested at a hearing in Maryland, Bill Schmalfeldt popped up on Twitter trying to bait Walker into commenting on Kimberlin. This coincidence — the judge on May 29, 2012, ordered Walker not to write about Kimberlin — escaped my notice until Walker pointed it out.

Was this “coordinated”? Had someone acting at Kimberlin’s behest urged Schmalfeldt to interrogate Walker, in an attempt to get Walker to violate the judge’s order, so as to provide Kimberlin with a new pretext for legal action against Walker? I have never claimed that this was the case, although Walker himself is certainly suspicious.

Let others speculate about motives, I merely describe what happened. Over the course of several months, Bill Schmalfeldt’s online harassment escalated, and always directed at antagonists of Kimberlin.

At one point (during Thanksgiving weekend), Schmalfeldt sent me more than 200 hostile Twitter messages in the span of 48 hours. But certainly the worst was Schmalfeldt’s maniacal online attacks against Lee Stranahan, a hateful spree that included shockingly vile writings about Stranahan’s wife and children. Stranahan eventually filed charges of harassment against Schmalfeldt, but the charges were dismissed. However, because John Hoge had given Stranahan a ride from the airport (Stranahan flew from Texas to Baltimore to file charges), Schmalfeldt then turned his obsessive rage against Hoge, which led eventually to Hoge getting a peace order against Schmalfeldt.

Schmalfeldt initiated the conflict, Schmalfeldt escalated the conflict, and at any time Schmalfeldt could have ended the conflict simply by ceasing his relentless attacks against Kimberlin’s enemies. For Schmalfeldt then to use Daily Kos to claim that he was victimized “by right wing nut jobs for no reason other than they wanted to” expresses a belief so far from reality that it can only be called delusional.

And what do we call people with delusional beliefs? Crazy.

Schmalfeldt has now been banned again at Daily Kos, and some of the comments by the DKos regulars are enlightening :

Anyone wondering why this troll was banned the first time should read [Schmalfeldt’s May 2012 post about anal sex].
He posts stupid attempts at humor, often offensive, and gets pissy when he is not heralded as a comedic genius.
When Tree Climbers objected to the language of the POS excerpted above, merely asking for a trigger warning, he mocked them and tried to “out” their charity.
Cried about it in another diary as well.

He was horrible in the comments and deserves no mercy this go round.

i recall he wanted to do a story on a fellow kossack (something about exposing things at her place of work). he harassed and pressured her, and clearly ‘stalked’ her. demeaned her…because she wouldn’t give him the story that would likely elevate him to the levels of woodward/bernstein…or something.
creepy.

Oh shit! Did anyone’s creepy meter go off? Mine sure did. Writing about yourself in third person should automatically come with a warning label.

These are comments from stalwart progressives, not “right wing nut jobs,” not by anyone with any political sympathy for Aaron Walker or Lee Stranahan or any of Schmalfeldt’s other targets. The fact is that Schmalfeldt’s online behavior has been atrocious enough that he has made himself persona non grata even among his own ideological allies. No “coordinated smear” was involved. Bill Schmalfeldt is just crazy.

But I’m pretty sure I mentioned that earlier . . .

Deranged Cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt Continues His Obsessive Cyberstalking

Bill Schmalfeldt: Born to rant. (Image via Thomas Anderson at Vimeo)

“All that is necessary to discredit Bill Schmalfeldt is to quote Bill Schmalfeldt. The vile creep got banned from Daily Kos for his grossly offensive writings about anal sodomy. Schmalfeldt’s penchant for obscene defamation . . . includes describing his own ex-wife — the mother of his children, whom Schmalfeldt divorced in 1988 — as a ‘meth-abusing serial adultress.’
“You may ask, how would such a person choose to honor the memory of his recently deceased mother? By accusing his ex-wife of ‘sucking Stranny Balls’ and ‘sucking Stranny dick,’ calling her an ‘adulterous slut’ and a ‘lower form of life,’ and also describing one of Lee Stranahan’s female friends as a ‘throbbing hemorrhoid’ and a ‘cunt.’“

— Robert Stacy McCain, March 9, 2012

It would be possible — and certainly highly desirable — to forget that such a reprehensible madman as Bill Schmalfeldt exists, if he did not continue making himself a public nuisance online.

Thursday, after a day of incessant Twitter ranting — much of it directed at Aaron Walker — Schmalfeldt deliberately published Walker’s home address and phone number at the anti-Breitbart site nobody should ever link. Schmalfeldt published this information while mocking Walker’s recent Howard County, Maryland, criminal harassment complaint against Schmalfeldt.

Just in case you ever entertain the thought that Bill Schmalfeldt might be sane, remember this: When accused of criminal harassment, Schmalfeldt’s reaction is . . . more harassment.

And this happened barely a month after a Maryland judge granted John Hoge’s peace order against Schmalfeldt. It’s as if he is incapable of learning anything, or is unable to restrain his insane urges to lash out at the targets of his obsessive rage.

UPDATE: It’s amazing that people think that, because they get away with something for a while, they’ll continue getting away with it forever. Two different Twitter accounts have been engaged in tag-team harassment of Aaron Worthing and John Hoge, as if no one could possibly find evidence indicating that this behavior was orchestrated by, funded by and/or pursued on behalf of Brett Kimberlin.

Does this look like evidence to you? It sure does to me. We’ll see if Bill Schmalfeldt can explain it next time he’s in court.

UPDATE II: Probably I shouldn’t link this — I denounce myself in advance — but CAUTION: NSFW.

Deranged Cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt Inspires Epic ‘Downfall’ Parody Video

Bill Schmalfeldt: Even crazier than he looks and he looks pretty damned crazy.

If you don’t know the backstory on this epic saga, a brief summary may be necessary: Deranged cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt is a troll so obnoxious he got banned from Daily Kos for a genuinely disgusting rant about anal rape. He got banned from the Examiner for being a serial violator of . . . well, just about everything, really.

How to describe his history of online failures? The Internet is to Bill Schmalfeldt what Acme Rocket Skates are to Wile E. Coyote.

Did I mention that he once blogged as “Brain-Damaged Troll“?

No matter how many times he fails — and he always fails — Bill Schmalfeldt can’t seem to figure out that he is responsible for his own failures, and instead externalizes blame onto scapegoats. He enjoys threatening and bullying people, taking sadistic pleasure in describing the terrible things that will happen to his enemies.

For example, in 2011, Schmalfeldt decided to launch a scorched-earth war of annihilation against a Facebook group that was supporting Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker against the Democrat/union-backed recall petition campaign. Schmalfeldt was going to expose these Evil Republican Facebookers, you see, because in Schmalfeldt’s demented imagination, they were some kind of criminal conspiracy. And also, I think, some of them may have mocked him as a fat old ridiculous douchebag. (See? They’re evil!) Schmalfeldt once threatened a guy for “liking” a Facebook page that ridiculed Schmalfeldt:

“By 5 pm today, October 25, Eastern Time, you will write me at [e-mail address] and tell me everything you  know about relationship with the whole Knot group.”

The pro-Walker blog Knot My Wisconsin recounts another typical threat by Schmalfeldt — “I’ll sue you into poverty!”

So by June 2012, when Schmalfeldt started cyberstalking Aaron Walker, his characteristic methods were already well-established. Over the course of several months, Bill expanded his range of targets to include others on Brett Kimberlin’s Enemies List, and did such heinous things to Lee Stranahan that in February Stranahan flew to Maryland and filed criminal harassment charges against him.

Blogger John Hoge assisted Stranahan in that effort, and Schmalfeldt then began cyberstalking Hoge with such lunatic vehemence that Hoge filed his own complaints against Schmalfeldt. Finally, in June, a Maryland court granted Hoge a peace order against Schmalfeldt.

At times, Brett Kimberlin himself appeared in court to support Schmalfeldt, lending credence to the suspicion that Bill wasn’t doing this just because he’s a wacko nutjob — although he certainly is cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs — but that Bill was being paid to do so on behalf of Kimberlin, the notorious bomber-turned-progressive activist. This is mere suspicion, of course: You can’t prove Kimberlin pays Internet trolls to harass his enemies, but some people suspect so.

OK, so now Kimberlin’s world is falling apart, and meanwhile he’s got this maniac henchperson (paid or volunteer) making an embarrassing nuisance of himself online. Schmalfeldt is now charged with having violated the Maryland peace order.

And meanwhile, in an underground bunker in Berlin . . .

If you don’t get all the inside jokes, ask John Hoge on Twitter.

Has Bill Schmalfeldt Forgotten?

Aaron Walker points out something about Bill Schmalfeldt’s harassment that had escaped my notice: When Schmalfeldt first began cyberstalking Walker, on June 3, 2012, it was only four days after Brett Kimberlin had gotten Walker arrested at a Maryland court hearing.

The judge at that Maryland hearing had ordered Walker not to write anything about Brett Kimberlin, and yet here was Schmalfeldt on Twitter, interrogating Walker about Kimberlin — as if attempting to bait Walker into violating the (soon-to-be-overturned) court order.

Maybe that was just a coincidence, eh?

Aaron also quotes at length some of Schmalfeldt’s symptomatic ravings. Any psychologist would note Schmalfedlt’s inability to accept responsibility for his own failures, and his habit of blaming all his problems on demonized scapegoats. Persistently ignoring the wrongs he has committed, he makes accusations of wrongdoing against others as justifying further sadistic harassment of his chosen enemies.

The clear evidence of Schmalfeldt’s madness, however, does not rule out the possibility that he has also been manipulated into joining an orchestrated campaign to harass Aaron Walker and other of Brett Kimberlin’s enemies. But at this late point in his descent into abject lunacy, I’m not sure that Schmalfeldt still retains enough of his mental faculties to remember what he has done or why he did it.

Imaginary ‘Rights’ You Don’t Have, You Sad and Disgusting Troll, Bill Schmalfeldt

Bill Schmalfeldt: Somewhere, a carnival is missing its sideshow freak

“Schmalfeldt is forever burning bridges behind him as he careens from disaster to disaster caused by his antisocial personality. He never accepts responsibility for his failures, always externalizing blame onto his scapegoated enemies.”
— Robert Stacy McCain, Feb. 20

“The State of Maryland has answered you, Mr. Schmalfeldt. It has told you: No, John Hoge does not have to answer your questions or read your statements, however you choose to deliver them. Not in tweets, nor in any other way. Maryland has answered your questions, sir. It has gathered up your statements. The authority you like to claim — in imperatives to others — has now been turned on you.”
— Becca Lower, “Bill Schmalfeldt, You Must”

Life is not fair. Some people have necks and some people don’t and — rather than seeking gainful employment as a carnival sideshow attraction — The Amazing Neckless Troll Man seems to be under the impression that his problems are our fault. He is wrong, as usual.

Saturday, while I was busy working on a 2,000-word article about Edward Snowden for ViralRead, Bill Schmalfeldt showed up in the comments of two Friday posts — “Peace Order Against Bill Schmalfeldt: A Defeat for the ‘Troll Rights’ Movement” and “Hoge’s Victory Lap” — in an apparent effort to win in the court of public opinion what he could not win in the Circuit Court of Carroll County, Maryland: The right to use the Internet to harass people he hates.

If all of Schmalfeldt’s comments have not yet been deleted, they will be, and I offer apologies to all our commenters who now, because of the disappearance of Schmalfeldt’s comments, may appear to have been arguing with someone who is not actually there. And, let’s face it: Bill Schmalfeldt hasn’t been “all there” in a long, long time.

Attempting to convince a madman that he is out of his mind is a hopeless task, and it’s best not to encourage Schmalfeldt in the delusion that he has anything to say that any sane person is obligated to notice, much less bothering to refute the kook. Nevertheless, here’s part of the “argument” Schmalfeldt made in one of his comments:

It’s actually quite humorous, the responses I’ve gotten. And quite revealing about your nature and your temperament. . . . You’ve been told I’m crazed and evil, therefore I am crazed and evil and that’s the end of the discussion. I deserve to be defamed and mocked with dishonestly cropped pictures.

“Dishonestly cropped pictures.” The loss of self-awareness indicated by that complaint speaks diagnostic volumes about the nature of Schmalfeldt’s derangement. Perhaps it is unnecessary to remind readers of what Bill Schmalfeldt once did with a photo of Sarah Palin:

Schmalfeldt created that Photoshop of Palin bleeding with a stake through her forehead to illustrate a post he wrote under his “Bill Matthews” alias at the Examiner. We need not rehearse here all the hateful acts of self-destructive madness Bill Schmalfeldt has engaged in during his sad descent into gibbering lunacy. It will perhaps be sufficient for anyone new to this psychiatric case-study to know that Schmalfeldt was banned from Daily Kos because of his writings about anal sex.

Go read it for yourself. I double-dog dare you.

Having lost the privilege of posting his demented ravings at Daily Kos, and having been similarly banished from contributing to the Examiner because of his habitual dishonesty, now this monstrous pervert wants to hijack the comments at this blog to claim victimhood.

Well, no. And there’s this: “Stalkers have no right to directly address you after they have been warned to cease and desist.”

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing about trolls like Bill Schmalfeldt.

The myth of “troll rights” is a persistent and dangerous delusion. You can write what you will on your own blog, Mr. Schmalfeldt, but the fact that no decent, honest or intelligent person cares to read your blog is not my problem. Likewise, the fact that the only use you seem to find for your Twitter account is to harass people you hate — not my problem.

Schmalfeldt’s problem can be described in two words: Bill Schmalfeldt.

Good luck fixing that problem, sir. It seems to be beyond repair.

Hoge’s Victory Lap

After his stunning courtroom triumph today over the atrocious troll Bill Schmalfeldt, John Hoge recounts at length exactly what kind of atrocious troll Bill Schmalfeldt is:

On 14 February, I received 40 tweets in less than one hour from @BreitbartUnmask ranting about Lee Stranahan, Aaron Walker, and me. Just after midnight on 15 February, I posted a notice on this blog and on Twitter addressed to @OldUncleBastard, @BreitbartUnmask, and @OccupyRebellion demanding that they stop communicating directly with me.

Now this relates to two sections of Maryland law, Harassment (§3-803) and Misuse of Electronic Communication (§3-805), that Hoge had read and which apparently Schmalfeldt hadn’t.

Understand this: It is one thing to say mean things about someone, but another to say mean things to someone.

The use of e-mail or Twitter to communicate hateful messages to someone — when the recipient has demanded that you cease such communications, notifying you that further messages will result in a complaint under the above sections of the law — is quite foolhardy.

And . . . Bill Schmalfeldt is quite a fool.

Such a fool is Bill Schmalfeldt that he supposed he might bring legal action against Hoge — don’t ask me to explain that — and listened to some of his online friends (including “Breitbart Unmasked”) who encouraged him to think that he, Schmalfeldt, was actually a victim.

Sadly, no.

Friday afternoon I talked to a friend, an attorney of no small reputation, who was somewhat skeptical of the use of Maryland’s law in this manner, which he felt might establish a bad precedent — a chilling effect on free speech, as it were. And so I began to say in a very serious way, how deeply I was concerned about the possible infringement of Bill Schmalfeldt’s First Amendment rights.

Then I laughed and laughed and laughed.

After I’d finished laughing — it took a while, I gotta tell ya — I eventually went over to Hoge’s blog and hit the tip jar. Everybody should.

And then you, too, can laugh and laugh and laugh and . . .

Peace Order Against Bill Schmalfeldt: A Defeat for the ‘Troll Rights’ Movement

Bill Schmalfeldt of Elk Ridge, Maryland

John Hoge has the peace order granted today by Maryland Judge Thomas Stansfield, forbidding Bill Schmalfeldt from contacting Hoge.

People who have followed this story know that, in June 2012, Schmalfeldt began cyberstalking Aaron Walker, whose legal conflicts with Brett Kimberlin had become a subject of widespread public attention. From there, Schmalfeldt steadily expanded his target range to include all of Walker’s supporters, including Hoge. By November, when Schmalfeldt took over the pro-Kimberlin site “Breitbart Unmasked,” he made himself a general nuisance. Schmalfeldt’s vicious attacks on Lee Stranahan’s family were particularly distressing. Did I mention that in July 2012, Schmalfeldt created a “Dead Andrew” site to mock the late Andrew Breitbart and disparage Breitbart’s conservative colleagues?

Trying to get judges to understand how the Internet works has proven problematic in the long struggle against Team Kimberlin. Today was a rare victory, as Aaron Walker reports:

Tae Kim showed up as Schmalfeldt’s attorney again, and did present the argument that electronic harassment is not harassment.  The judge rejected that out of hand.
It is also worth noting that Schmalfeldt was also subpoenaed to produce documents.  He refused to comply with that, a fact that Hoge’s able counsel, Zoa Barnes, exploited repeatedly to show that Schmalfeldt didn’t respect the law.
So the case was pretty straightforward from there.  Barnes established that Schmalfeldt had been told repeatedly to stop contacting Hoge and despite being told by numerous people (including a judge), he just kept going, even up until last night.  The judge found the conduct to be harassment, comparing it to junk mail, and granted the peace order.  For the next six months, Bill Schmalfeldt will be prohibited from contacting Hoge by any means.  He can talk about him—that is his First Amendment right—but he can’t actually contact him.

Something else Aaron Walker reports: Brett Kimberlin showed up in court for Schmalfeldt’s hearing.

This is something Schmalfeldt will not explain — this is what the document subpoena was about — because the facts would not likely be flattering to Schmalfeldt’s patron. It is a reasonable surmise that Schmalfeldt’s communications would show the extent to which his harassment of Hoge, Walker and others was undertaken with the encouragement of Brett Kimberlin and Kimberlin’s associate Neal Rauhauser. Walker and others believe they have been the targets of an orchestrated campaign of harassment aimed at Kimberlin’s enemies.

One might argue that Bill Schmalfeldt is merely a nutjob, but Kimberlin’s presence at today’s court hearing certainly suggests that the focus of Schmalfeldt’s madness was not entirely random.

Check John Hoge’s blog for further news.

EVIL SHALL NOT PROSPER

Neal Rauhauser was a speaker at the 2010 Netroots Nation conference

“Kimberlin’s associate Neal Rauhauser recently admitted in a complaint to my office that he introduced [Nadia] Naffe to attorney Jay Leiderman . . .
“In the same document, Rauhauser declared that if Naffe is successful, he believes it will put an end to my career as a Deputy D.A.”

— Patrick “Patterico” Frey, Oct. 4, 2012

This is indeed very happy news, my friends:

Ken and I in particular got to face, not just criticism, but “vapid and dishonest partisan hacks” who criticized both of us for standing up for free speech — including “the greasy, demi-literate, demented Hutt who wrote an extended quasi-sexual fantasy about a mob murdering Patrick and me.”
Hi, Bill Schmalfeldt! I understand you were curious about the result of this case. I’m happy to be sharing that with you! And, your sick, twisted fantasies notwithstanding, nobody has yet beaten me or Ken with baseball bats or tire irons. No group of men has thrown us in front of a moving truck as part of a conspiracy to cause our deaths.

Now, it was actually Ken at Popehat who described Bill Schmalfeldt as a “demented Hutt,” but I read it at Patterico‘s so . . .

Why is this such happy news? Because this nuisance suit against Patterico was self-evidently part of a deliberate vendetta against one of Brett Kimberlin’s chosen targets, an attempt to silence Patterico and intimidate others, as I explained in October:

I can’t imagine any court finding Patterico guilty of anything, but this lawsuit is just another typical product of the Kimberlin-Rauhauser “accuse the accusers” strategy. Once they target someone, the accusations proliferate endlessly as part of an orchestrated effort to discredit anyone who might accuse them of wrongdoing.

Off the top of my head, I could name a half-dozen people who have been targeted in this manner by either Kimberlin or Rauhauser or the various sociopathic trolls in their online mob. This is not merely harassment and cyberstalking — although it is that — but it is in fact political terrorism, and this lawfare harassment of Patrick Frey was an effort to silence him for having said so:

Keep in mind that Rauhauser, by inciting Nadia Naffe’s lawsuit against Patterico, has obligated Patterico to avoid writing about this subject on advice of counsel . . .

Well, how’s that working out for you, Neal Rauhauser? Patterico promises to tell the truth — the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help him God — on Monday. Meanwhile, go hit Patterico’s tip jar, and encourage him to plunge the knife of truth as deep as it will go.

Evil shall not prosper, nor will the wicked triumph. Selah.
