Obama’s Foreign Policy Is About as Successful as Obama’s Domestic Policy

Which is to say, it’s a pathetic joke:

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs’ pronouncement today that Libya is a “stalemate” would, I think, have gotten a bit more attention but for the debt debate.

We recently passed the four-month anniversary of “Operation Odyssey Dawn,” the U.S.-led air assault on Moammar Qaddafi’s regime. Now, 128 days later, we’ve got a “stalemate.”

Just as they don’t teach economics at Harvard Law, I guess they don’t teach military history there, either. So we pissed away hundreds of billions in neo-Keynesian “stimulus” spending without creating a recovery, and now we’ve wasted hundreds of millions in bombs and missiles without defeating the enemy — who, it’s worth pointing out, posed no threat to the U.S. or its allies.

You know who’s smiling now? Jimmy Carter.

Because Jimmy’s well on his way to becoming the second-worst president in American history.

Those Meddling Neo-Cons Again!

Because I voted for Libertarian Bob Barr in 2008, I can’t use Instapundit’s signature “They told me if I voted for John McCain” riff, but would someone please tell me how the U.S. stance toward the Libyan rebels is less meddlesome than the Bush-Cheney regime-change policy in Iraq?

ISTANBUL — The United States formally recognized the rebel leadership in Libya as the country’s legitimate government on Friday, allowing the rebel government access to $30 billion in Libyan assets held in the United States. It is not yet clear how and when the money would be released.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said at an international gathering held to discuss the Libyan conflict that Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s government no longer had any legitimacy, and that the United States would join more than 30 countries in extending diplomatic recognition to the main opposition group, known as the Transitional National Council.
“We will help the T.N.C. sustain its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya,” Mrs. Clinton said, “and we will look to it to remain steadfast in its commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

Whatever happened to the “No Blood for Oil” crowd? Where’s Code Pink, Michael Moore and the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition?

Is it now the settled policy of the United States that we are arbiters of the “legitimacy” of governments in other nations? If so, how are such things decided?

Of the multitudinous autocratic governments in the world, which autocracies are on America’s Secret List of Soon-to-Be-Illegitimate Regimes? Because I’m noticing a distinct lack of State Department interest in whether the governments of Cuba, Venezuela or Iran are “legitimate.”

Nobody’s shedding any tears for Moammar Qaddafi, but we just can’t go around the world willy-nilly declaring foreign governments “illegitimate.” Well, actually I guess we can do that — we have done it before and are in fact doing it now — but it doesn’t seem an altogether wise policy, if there is no rhyme or reason why we intervened militarily on behalf of the Libyan rebels, but wouldn’t lift a finger to aid the anti-Ahmadinejad protesters in Iran.

And let me express a fond hope that Republican presidential candidates will speak out about the seemingly random, illogical, unprincipled, opportunistic and thoroughly hypocritical interventionism of the Obama administration. Because otherwise I might have to consider voting Libertarian again in 2008.

Democrats: The Warmonger Party

Today, 149 Democrats voted against defunding Obama’s Illegal War™ in Libya. Our nation now awaits the onset of Code Pink peace protests against such bloodthirsty imperialist warmongers as Nancy Pelosi, Raul Grijalva and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

U.S. forces will continue their effort to kill Moammar Qaddafi.

White House spokesman H.R. Haldeman strenuously denied reports that President Obama was planning to re-institute the military draft, mobilize the National Guard, mine Haiphong harbor and invade Cambodia.

Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist could not be reached for comment.

RE-ELECT OBAMA
Because Bombing Foreigners to Smithereens
Is Only Wrong When Republicans Do It!

Libya: Who, Whom?

“But the bottom line is, whose side are you on? Are you on Qaddafi’s side or are you on the side of the aspirations of the Libyan people and the international coalition that has been created to support them? For the Obama Administration, the answer to that question is very easy.”
— Hillary Clinton, June 22

Everyone is having fun recalling the Good Old Days — which ended about three years ago — when liberals loved to lecture us that “dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” Dissent against liberalism, however, apparently doesn’t count, even when liberals are doing the exact same things they once denounced Republicans for doing.

Obama’s Illegal War™ cannot be justified under any logic the Left would have accepted during the Bush years, and yet Democrats are cynical enough to realize that the Left has nowhere else to go: Whatever else happens, liberal peaceniks aren’t going to vote Republican next year, so Hillary can impute treason to them at no political cost. And political costs are the only costs that concern her. Continue reading Libya: Who, Whom? →

Not ‘Hostilities,’ Just ‘Imminent Danger’

What U.S. forces are doing in Libya is not “hostilities,” the White House said last week — because “hostilities” is the key word in the War Powers Act, which the White House insists doesn’t apply to Libya. NATO bombs are killing civilians, but it’s not “hostilities.” However, the Pentagon is giving “imminent danger” pay to troops deployed for the Not Actually a War in Libya:

On Monday, a spokesman for House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) said the Pentagon’s decision was further proof that Obama’s logic is flawed.
“If members of our armed forces involved in the military action in Libya are getting ‘imminent danger’ pay, it’s one more indication that the White House claim that we aren’t involved in ‘hostilities’ just doesn’t pass the straight-face test,” said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel.

Meanwhile, watch Jay Carney spin it in this clip from the PBS Newshour:

Operation Odyssey Dawn began March 19, so we’re now past the 90-day window required for the president to notify Congress under the War Powers Act, but liberals never live by the rules they try to enforce on others, and Obama’s Illegal War™ just proves the rule.

BREAKING: Libya Spokesman Says NATO Strike Killed 3 of Qaddafi’s Grandsons UPDATE: Attack Also Reportedly Kills Qaddafi’s Youngest Son, Saif al-Arab, 29

An urgent dispatch from Reuters but no details yet.

UPDATE: Al-Jazeera confirms and adds detail:

Saif al-Arab, the youngest son of the Libyan leader, has been killed in a NATO air strike, a Libyan government spokesman said.
The spokesman said Muammar Gaddafi was unharmed but three of his grandsons were also killed in the attack in Tripoli on Saturday. . . .
“The leader himself is in good health, he wasn’t harmed,” the spokesman said, adding that Muammar Gaddafi’s wife was also unharmed but other people in the house were injured.
“This was a direct attempt to assassinate the leader of the country”, he said. . . .
The 29-year-old Saif al-Arab Gaddafi is the most unknown of the Libyan leader’s children.

UPDATE II: Now Reuters has a write-through:

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi survived a NATO airstrike on Saturday night that killed his youngest son Saif al-Arab and three of his grandchildren, a Libyan government spokesman said.
Mussa Ibrahim said Saif al-Arab was a civilian and a student who had studied in Germany. He was 29 years old.
Libyan officials took journalists to the house, which had been hit by at least three missiles. The roof had completely caved in in some areas, leaving strings of reinforcing steel hanging down among chunks of concrete.
A table football machine stood outside in the garden of the house, which was in a wealthy residential area of Tripoli.

UPDATE III: BBC has video of the press announcement by spokesman Moussa Ibrahim, who said that Qaddafi was in the house when it was hit.

UPDATE IV: From the Associated Press:

Gadhafi and his wife were in the Tripoli house of his 29-year-old son, Seif al-Arab Gadhafi, when it was hit by at least one bomb dropped from a NATO warplane, according to Libyan spokesman Moussa Ibrahim.
Seif al-Arab Gadhafi was the sixth son of Gadhafi and brother of the better known Seif al-Islam Gadhafi. . . .
“The attack resulted in the martyrdom of brother Seif al-Arab Gadhafi, 29 years old, and three of the leader’s grandchildren,” Ibrahim said. . . .
Seif al-Arab “was playing and talking with his father and mother and his nieces and nephews and other visitors when he was attacked for no crimes committed,” Ibrahim said.

UPDATE V: Via Mediaite, a video report from CNN:

Now a Memeorandum thread

UPDATE VI: Drew M. at AOSHQ notes that this attack points toward “mission creep” in Libya:

So, I’m still unclear if the purpose of the NATO mission is to topple the regime and/or kill Gaddafi or just protect civilians. I’m not a military expert but I’m not clear on how bombing someone’s home protects civilians hundreds of miles away. Actually, I do (no Gaddafi, no danger) but I was told by the President that killing Gaddafi wasn’t part of out military strategy. It’s almost like Obama and the rest of the NATO leaders are saying one thing but acting very differently.

How does the slogan “Obama lied, three little kids died” work for you guys? Nah, me neither. After Lockerbie, you can’t expect Americans to work up any sympathy for Qaddafi’s family, even if they are innocent civilians.

Still, it’s hard for the U.S. to pretend it’s not going for “regime change” after this. And that United Nations Security Council resolution doesn’t say jack about “regime change.”

NOTE: What was originally my first update to this breaking story confused the attack that killed Saif al-Arab with a different attack aimed at Qaddafi that also hit a school for Down Syndrome children:

It was unclear what the target of the strike was, though Libyan officials said it was Muammar Gaddafi himself, who was giving a live television address at the time.
“They maybe wanted to hit the television. This is a non-military, non-governmental building,” said Mohammed al-Mehdi, head of the civil societies council, which licenses and oversees civil groups in Libya.
The missile completely destroyed an adjoining office in the compound that houses the government’s commission for children.
The force of the blast blew in windows and doors in the parent-funded school for children with Down’s Syndrome and officials said it damaged an orphanage on the floor above.

BTW, thanks to Brittany Cohan on Twitter for the alert.

NATO Hits Qaddafi Compound

NATO bombers hit Qaddafi’s headquarters compound near Tripoli. Here’s an al-Jazeera video report:

Meanwhile, on the fighting front at Ajdabiya, the big news today is that the rebels are listening to anti-Qaddafi rap music.  Which is a poor substitute for actual news, but I guess the Associated Press is more interested in happy-face feature stories than reporting how the war is going. Damn sad thing when you can get more news from al-Jazeera than from the Associated Press . . .
