WATERLOO FOR BIRTHERS: Obama Releases Long-Form Birth Certificate

Posted on | April 27, 2011 | 42 Comments

UPDATE 12:10 p.m.: VIDEO: Obama Sermonizes About This Silly Distraction From His Incompetence

* * * * *

PREVIOUSLY (9:15 a.m. ET): The White House this morning released Barack Obama’s long-form birth certificate, which is now available online as a PDF.

UPDATE: CNN reports:

The White House released President Obama’s original birth certificate Wednesday.
The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.
White House spokesman Jay Carney is expected to speak more about the birth certificate Wednesday morning.

Wow. Guess their internal polls showed that Trump was really hurting their guy.

UPDATE II: Funny guys on Twitter:

UPDATE III: Associated Press:

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama felt the debate over his birthplace had become a “sideshow” that was bad for the country and political debate. . . .
“The president feels this was bad for the country, that it’s not healthy for our political debate,” Carney said.

Translation: “It wasn’t healthy for his re-election prospects.”

UPDATE IV: Ed Morrissey at Hot Air:

Note that the long form doesn’t have any mention of religion at all, which was one theory as to why Obama was supposedly “hiding” it, nor does it list anyone else as Obama’s father, another speculative bit of nonsense peddled by the birthers. The place of birth box is checked as within city or town limits, signed as thus by the attendant to the birth.
This conspiracy theory should have died three years ago. Now, maybe we can focus on all the ways Obama is failing as President.

Having dismissed the whole controversy as silly from the outset, and having mostly ignored it ever since, I was amazed at how much traction it got when Trump started pounding it in interview after interview.

UPDATE V: Professor William Jacobson had remarked on how much damage Trump was doing.

UPDATE VI: The Lonely Conservative:

I just have to wonder why they didn’t do this two years ago?

The White House press release is here and there is, as might be expected, a massive Memeorandum thread.

Next, I’m waiting for Andrew Sullivan to say, “See there? Now where’s Trig’s birth certificate? What’s Sarah Palin hiding?” In fact, Sully may have already said that, but I haven’t bothered to look yet.

UPDATE VII: Steve Eggleston:

In case you were wondering what it takes to get a copy of the original Certificate of Live Birth out of Hawaii, the White House provided the correspondence between Obama, his private lawyer, and Hawaii Director of Health Loretta J. Fuddy.

UPDATE VIII: You saw this coming, right?

“I’m taking great credit and you have to ask the president, ‘why didn’t he do this a long time ago? Why didn’t he do it a long time ago?’ When Hillary Clinton was asking, when everybody was asking, why didn’t he do it? It’s shocking. It’s shocking,” Donald Trump said at a press conference this morning on President Obama’s birth certificate.

Donald Trump: Not Just a Kook, an Effective Kook.

UPDATE IX: David Frum refers to Birtherism as “the racialist aspect of the anti-Obama movement,” which is rather a large leap. I always compared it to the various strange conspiracy theories about Mena Airport and/or Vince Foster that flourished during Bill Clinton’s first term.

In politics, some people are always more interested in throwing out spooky charges of criminality or fraud than in arguing over policy. You saw this during the Bush administration, with the stuff about Halliburton and Iraq, the claims of rigged voting machines in Ohio, the “Plamegate” controversy and all those wild fantasies about Karl Rove getting indicted.

UPDATE X: Linked by Pirate’s Cove and the Lonely Conservative — thanks! Our favorite Twitter celebrity weighs in:

That settles the question, doesn’t it? If it’s good enough for Alyssa Milano, there can be no further doubt!

UPDATE XI: Linked by Bob Belvedere at Camp of the Saints.

McDonald’s Beating Suspect

Posted on | April 27, 2011 | 4 Comments

We have a mug shot and a name:

Baltimore County police have named the 18-year-old charged with beating a transgender woman at Rosedale McDonald’s, amid demands from some community members that the incident be investigated as a hate crime.
Teonna Monae Brown of the 2000 block of Kelbourne Road in Rosedale was charged in the attack on Chrissy Lee Polis. The incident was videotaped and went viral online late last week, with hundreds of thousands of views on various websites. The video shows Polis, 22, being kicked and punched in the head by two people until she appears to have a seizure. While one employee and a patron try to intervene, others can be seen standing and watching, and some are laughing.
Brown, who was arrested Friday, has been charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault.

Can there be any doubt that Teonna Monae Brown is a right-wing Republican extremist Christian fundamentalist theocrat homophobe?

I think not!

Because Mrs. The Other Smitty loves it when I abuse her tongue.
Ed Driscoll rolls out the hot shadow laughter for BHO-One Quixote*:

Incidentally, it’s got to be quite a comedown from having a rare combination of enough chutzpah and imaginary messianic power to say with a straight face, “This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal,” to being told less than three years later by CNN that “There is almost nothing a politician can do about it at least in the short run.”

When this presidency ends as a totally farcical take on a Greek tragedy, I want it known that I called it a while back.

Former Air America Host Arrested After Heckling Rep. Allen West at Town Hall

Posted on | April 26, 2011 | 70 Comments

The Palm Beach Post has identified former Air America radio host Nicole Sandler as the woman who was arrested and led out of a town hall meeting in handcuffs after she heckled Rep. Allen West and got into a confrontation with the Republican congressman’s wife.

Javier Manjarres at The Shark Tank has video of repeated disruptions at the town hall in Fort Lauderdale where West declared: “You’re not going to intimidate me.” The video ends with Ms. Sandler being arrested and led out of the meeting by police.

UPDATE: Among the things shouted by the hecklers: “How about our Medicare that you’re stealing?” Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit:

This is the left’s latest strategy- disrupt, heckle, insult, and silence conservatives.
Unfortunately for the left, the strategy won’t work with Allen West.

I’m trying to remember a quote from Nancy Pelosi where she compared the Tea Party protests at 2009 health-care town-hall meetings to Nazis.

UPDATE II: Welcome, Instapundit readers!

UPDATE III: Ah, I knew I’d find it. Nancy Pelosi asked about Tea Party protests, August 2009: “I think they’re Astroturf — you be the judge. They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town hall meeting on health care.”

UPDATE IV: The Sun-Sentinel reports on the arrest:

Nicole Sandler of Coral Springs interrupted when West was explaining the Republican position on Medicare.
Sandler shouted a question, which prompted responses from other audience members: “Shut up lady.”
She didn’t stop. As people recorded the scene with their camera phones, she was escorted out by a Fort Lauderdale police officer.
Sandler objected to being asked to leave, arguing with the officer as he escorted her out, including emphatically cursing at him. Ultimately he arrested her for “trespass after warning” and transferred her to another police officer who took Sandler away.
Sandler used to be a host on the now defunct Air America liberal radio network.

Allahpundit:

You’d think progressives would be out in force to try to embarrass a tea-party all-star, but no. . . . When the big dissident presence at a rally is a host from a defunct radio network, you’ve got yourself an optics problem.

Speaking of “Astroturf,” thanks to Joe Fein in the comments for pointing out that MoveOn.org has called for “Defend the Dream Recess Action” by the Left.

UPDATE V: Dan Riehl:

Given that 2008 established the Racism Rule of political criticism, if the candidate is black, it must be a racist attack, I think we can conclude Nicole there could benefit from some serious sensitivity training.

Now a Memeorandum thread.

UPDATE VI: Yeah, this one’s going viral: Macsmind, The Hayride, Trevor Loudon and All American Blogger.

UPDATE VII: The Democrat response:

Florida Democratic Party spokesman Eric Jotkoff told The Daily Caller that “Floridians are disappointed that Allen West refused to answer the hard questions from his constituents, who are clearly upset with his voting to end Medicare.”
“Once again tonight, we see that Allen West is completely out of touch with the people of South Florida, which is why they are going to send him into retirement in 2012,” Jotkoff said in an e-mail.

Did he refuse to answer any “hard questions”? I don’t think so. Accusing him of “stealing our Medicare” isn’t a question, it’s just a lie. It appears that Democrats who wanted a MoveOn.org “Recess Action” were angry they didn’t get to run the show according to their own plan.

UPDATE VIII: A little background on Nicole Sandler: Since leaving Air America, she now has her own 2-hour daily podcast, and Tuesday guest-hosted the Randi Rhodes Show (Rhodes being Sandler’s former Air America colleague). Then she sent this message via Twitter:

She’s not very popular: A former nationally syndicated radio host, yet she’s got fewer than 4,000 followers on Twitter.

You know who has more Twitter followers than Nicole Sandler? Jimmie Bise Jr. — who also has a podcast.

Is Politico Trying To Build Support For Governor Sarah Palin?

Posted on | April 26, 2011 | 10 Comments

by Smitty (h/t DaTechGuy)

Really. What dreck. Politico begins an article with two lines of slander, and then walk it back with “Those are just some of the opinions about Sarah Palin held by members of a small but extremely active network of gadflies, bloggers and authors who have devoted much of the last 2½ years to proving their case to American voters.” Well, as long as you put lies in someone else’s mouth, it’s OK.
Feel the tension mount, emphasis mine:

But some of their leading theories have been thoroughly discredited and earned them widespread criticism. (See: ‘Mama Grizzly’ Sarah Palin back on the prowl)
Yet that only seems to have hardened a commitment to accomplishing what they profess to be their ultimate goal: the absolute and complete exposure of Palin as a fraud unworthy of a role in American civic life. And now, with Palin edging back into the political spotlight in the face of flagging poll numbers, they believe that they are closer than ever to achieving it.

I have no doubt that there are “fraud(s) unworthy of a role in American civic life” afoot, but she isn’t the one I’m thinking of.
Summarizing the rest of the article:

  1. Having lost sight of truth and fact as though they were spinal vertebrae, the Lefty worms seek comfort in lies.
  2. And there shall be books and rumors of books spewing forth from that invertebrate Left.
  3. And they shall throw this book at her, and that, and another, even unto the uttermost length of the shelf shall they stretch, grasping after tomes, that the utter dreck of the writing may somehow stick to Palin.
  4. For they recall their 2008 propaganda coup, when an admittedly clever one-liner in uttered by the lips of a comedienne was mis-attributed to Palin by the multitudes.
  5. But alas, real satisfaction is rooted in truth, which the Left rejected, back in verse #1, and thus are were they doomed to a life spent emitting crap in the manure spreader fashion.

What will the effect of this polarizing nonsense be? I submit that the polarized country left by the Uniter of 2008 will be little affected. Maybe some ambivalent people in the center will be turned off by the series of anti-Palin books. However, they will sell poorly, I predict. Their chief effect will be to rile up the Palinistas and improve her support. Because, sooner or later, everything the Left undertakes achieves the opposite of its intended effect. Only when they can make their efforts fail upward is there a temporary simulation of success.

Is she running for President? Not yet, not officially, and perhaps never. I wouldn’t even worry about it until almost the last minute. Nor should we care: the plan to recover the country from the Progressive Century is more important than who implements it. If she’s on the ticket, and you’re a conservative, then you know what to do.

Death Panels May Work, If Christoph Waltz Is In Charge

He was the Nazi in Inglourious Basterds who was so evil that he didn’t need a James Earl Jones voice, and could make ordering a glass of milk into a sinister act. Sure, we’re talking some garden variety mayhem here, but he brings such a flair to the task that I truly think he could salvage ObamaCare, given the opportunity.
This American Idol clip show him in fine form casually, yet directly, addressing the problem at hand:
