Minnesota Assassin Captured: Exactly Why Did Vance Boelter Go Crazy?

Posted on | June 16, 2025 | Comments Off on Minnesota Assassin Captured: Exactly Why Did Vance Boelter Go Crazy?

This story broke late Sunday:

Suspected political assassin Vance Luther Boelter was captured Sunday following an intense manhunt for the gunman accused of murdering a Minnesota state lawmaker and wounding another, state officials announced.
Boelter, a 57-year-old former appointee of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, was sought by police for allegedly wounding Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, and killing former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband.
“After a two-day manhunt and two sleepless nights, law enforcement have apprehended Vance Boelter,” Walz said during a press briefing.
The armed accused killer was taken into custody without incident in a rural, wooded area in Sibley County, southwest of Minneapolis, after authorities received a tip about a possible sighting hours earlier, state officials announced Sunday night.
Officers from multiple agencies, including SWAT teams, combed the area for hours and were assisted by helicopters using infrared cameras and drones, officials said.
It was a resident’s trail camera he passed in a rural town that tripped him up, according to the Star Tribune.
“Most of the search had concluded then,” Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher said. “But the trail cam picture alerted SWAT teams to go to the area, search a perimeter and with the help of drones, identify his location.”
Boelter’s capture ended the “largest manhunt in the state’s history,” which lasted around 43 hours, involved at least 200 officers and utilized a federal, state and local partnership, Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley told reporters.

Boelter is “in the custody of U.S. Marshals as he awaits his first court appearance in federal court Monday afternoon”:

Boelter will now appear in federal court at 1:30 p.m. [Central time, 2:30 p.m. ET] after initially slated for a first hearing at the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is scheduled to share statements about the federal case at 11 a.m.

There are many mysteries surrounding Boelter’s motive, and we’ll get to that, but first notice what Hennepin County prosecutor Mary Moriarty said in a press conference this morning:

“Political violence is prevalent, and the way we talk to and about each other has raised the temperature to unfathomable levels,” Moriarty said. “We cannot continue on this way in times of tragedy.” . . .
“As our community grieves, I encourage those out there seeking to create additional chaos to stop spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories” . . .

What evidence is there that “the way we talk” about politics had any influence on Vance Boelter? And exactly what kind of “misinformation and conspiracy theories” was the prosecutor referring to?

Having spent most of the day Saturday trying to figure out what motivated Vance Boelter, I am perplexed by Moriary’s seeming certainty that political rhetoric was to blame for his crimes. As someone who is constantly monitoring political discourse, I’ve been exposed to almost every form of “misinformation and conspiracy theories” out there, and yet have never gone on a murder spree. Just now, the acting U.S. Attorney in Minnesota gave a press conference in which he said the “why” of Boelter’s crimes is “not clear.” He said that Boelter had apparently been planning these assassinations for months, and had a list of targets — all of them Democrats. So there’s that. Meanwhile . . .

Boelter’s wife, Jennifer, reportedly worked as an intern for Gov. Tim Walz back when he was still in Congress. On Saturday morning, she was detained during a traffic stop near Onamia, which also involved several of Boelter’s relatives. According to Tom Hauser of ABC 5 Eyewitness News, nearly a dozen police vehicles swarmed the car and held the scene for up to three hours. Hauser’s sources say officers discovered a weapon, ammunition, cash, and passports inside the vehicle.

That’s kind of weird, isn’t it? The weirdest thing, however, is that while Boelter was married and owned a half-million-dollar home, he was spending several nights a month staying at home shared by several roommates, including his childhood friend David Carlson:

[There were] hints of a growing trouble within, which began after a three-year stint in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where [Boelter] claimed to have multiple business interests tied to his security company, Red Lion Group.
“I thought his demeanor [changed], he wasn’t as cheerful as he used to be. Since he got back from Africa, I guess,” Boelter’s roommate and self-described best friend David Carlson told The Post, adding he got back four months ago and quit his job to go there.
“He came back and he was struggling a little bit. I thought it was normal struggles.”
Boelter calls himself the CEO of Red Lion Group on his LinkedIn page, where he lists the company’s home base as the Democratic Republic of Congo. But besides the passing reference, virtually no information is available about the company.
“His dream was to have a security company,” Carlson said, hinting that his dream was more rooted in delusion than reality.
“He never was or never had a security company. He wasn’t doing security for anybody — it wasn’t his job.”
Carlson noted that Boelter even had two official cars for the alleged company despite having “no clients [and] no employees.” . . .
Carlson said his friend had a tough time landing a job after returning from his most recent overseas trip, sharing, “I thought his thing in Africa was bringing him down.” . . .
Boelter’s apparent obsession with play-acting as a security operations expert extended to another dubious business venture called Praetorian Guard Security Services, ostensibly helmed by his wife, Jenny.
The company website lists Boelter as “Director of Security Patrols,” boasting he’s been “involved” with “security situations in Eastern Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East, including the West Bank, Southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.”

Boelter’s “obsession with play-acting as a security operations expert,” and his inexplicable fascination with Africa are obviously part of the psychological profile here. There was some kind of delusional thinking pattern involved, but what’s with him doing the part-time roommate thing with his childhood buddy? It doesn’t make sense, and law enforcement isn’t giving us much to work with, in terms of figuring out when, why and how Boelter went off the rails.

FMJRA 2.0: September in Washington

Posted on | June 15, 2025 | Comments Off on FMJRA 2.0: September in Washington

— compiled by Wombat-socho

Ah, September…the month when the rosters expand, the kids go back to school, the miserable sweaty heat lingers over the Anacostia, and the crowds at RFK dwindle as the Senators get beaten like a rented mule. We were hoping for a .500 week, but we got swept by the Hated Yankees and lost two of three to the Twins. The only game we won was Game Three against the Twins, where Carl Morton and Bob Johnson combined to blank the Twins for Carl’s 11th win and Bob’s 23rd save. So now we’re 65-76, five games in back of the second-place Twins and half a game ahead of the A’s. Next week we’ll face the Cardinals (2-1) on Tuesday and the Tribe (5-4) on Friday. Not real sanguine about making the playoffs.

‘Politically Motivated Assassination’ Targets Two Minnesota Democrats UPDATE: Suspect Identified, Had ‘Manifesto’ — ‘No Kings’ Motive? UPDATE: ‘False Flag’? It’s So Confusing!

Posted on | June 14, 2025 | 1 Comment

State Sen. John Hoffman (left); State Rep. Melissa Hortman (right)

“A manhunt is now underway for the gunman”:

A Minnesota state representative and her husband were shot and killed, and a state senator and his wife were shot and wounded in an “act of targeted political violence” at their homes early Saturday, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said.
A manhunt is now underway for the gunman who was impersonating a police officer, authorities said. The gunman attacked by knocking on the doors and asking the victims to come out, police said.
State Rep. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband were shot and killed in what appears to be a “politically-motivated assassination,” Walz said at a news conference.
“She was a formidable public servant,” the governor said of his friend. “She is irreplaceable.”
State Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife were both shot multiple times and underwent surgery, the governor said. . . .
The two shooting locations are a few miles away from each other in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, just north of Minneapolis.
Hoffman and his wife were shot around 2 a.m. in Champlin, Superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Drew Evans said.
After Hoffman was shot, officers were heading to pro-actively check on Hortman when they encountered the suspect at Hortman’s home around 3:35 a.m., Evans said.
The officers found a person who was dressed as a police officer — wearing a vest and a badge, and with a Taser and other equipment — at the door, coming out of Hortman’s house, police said.
The suspect fired at the officers; gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was able to escape and flee on foot, authorities said.
The suspect’s vehicle — which looked like a police vehicle, including police lights — was in Hortman’s driveway, authorities said.
A list of other possible targets was retrieved from the suspect’s vehicle, authorities said. Police said the list had “many lawmakers,” including the victims. . . .
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the agency is “fully engaged on the ground in Minnesota.”

UPDATE: This is not yet officially confirmed:

While we await official confirmation, I must emphasize the need to beware of rumors and speculation about motive.

UPDATE II: Again, not officially confirmed:

If true, this would be the first clear evidence we have of the gunman’s motive. We await more developments.

UPDATE III: Still more unconfirmed reports:

UPDATE IV: The New York Post reports:

A former appointee of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is being sought in connection with the assassination of a state lawmaker and the shooting of another, police sources said.
Vance Luther Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer when he shot Sen. John Hoffman and his wife in their Champlin home early Saturday, leaving them seriously injured before moving on to former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman’s house — where he is believed to have slaughtered her and her husband, sources told The Post.
Boelter, 57, was appointed by Walz in 2019 to serve a four year stint on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board, documents show.
He previously served on the Governor’s Workforce Development Council in 2016 under then -Gov. Mark Dayton.
The killer had fliers with the words “No Kings” in his car, a reference to Saturday’s planned protests against the Trump Administration, as well as a “manifesto” and a list of other politicians’ names, said police, who briefly cornered the shooter at Hortman’s home before the suspect fled.

Meanwhile, the manhunt for Boelter continues.

UPDATE V: It looks like maybe I jumped the gun a bit here, despite my desire to be cautious about such things. The shooter’s “manifesto” allegedly also listed abortion providers as targets, and some are suggesting that Boelter may be a right-wing extremist, so that the “No Kings” flyers were part of a “false flag” deception. At this point, however, we can’t be certain of his motive. It’s entirely possible he just slipped a cog and went nuts and, as you know, Crazy People Are Dangerous.

One Standard Deviation: How Israel Targeted Iran’s Top Air Force Leaders

Posted on | June 13, 2025 | 2 Comments

Say hello to Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh and, while you’re at it, go ahead and say good-bye because, as Clemenza said of Paulie, you won’t see him no more:

The commander of the IRGC [Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps] air force, Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Iran overnight, the IDF announces.
According to the military, the top brass of the IRGC Aerospace Force was killed alongside him as they met in an underground command center to prepare to attack Israel.
The command center was struck by fighter jets, the IDF says. . . .
Among the senior officials killed were the commanders of the IRGC’s drone unit and air defense unit, the military says. . . .
“Hajizadeh publicly pledged allegiance to the idea of destroying Israel on multiple occasions in recent years and played a central role in formulating the plan to destroy Israel,” the army adds.

Did you know Jews are smart? I mean, on average, despite such utter dummies as Joy Behar. “Jews — specifically, Ashkenazi Jews of European origins — test higher than any other ethnic group. . . . [T]heir mean IQ was .97 standard deviation above the rest of the [U.S.] population” (The Bell Curve, p. 275). A “standard deviation” is about 15 IQ points, the difference between “bright normal” and genius.

Israel is a nation born in war, and which has been under attack regularly since its modern founding in 1948. Since the 1980s, Israel has had an influx of Ashkenazi migrants from the former Soviet Union, including many ultra-Orthodox Jews with large families. Thus you have a nation of approximately 7 million Jews, the entire population of whom are, on average, one standard deviation smarter than their Arab neighbors, and devoted to military activity as their only hope of survival.

The Israelis fight smart, you see:

As it became clear Israel was about to attack, the commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ air force convened in a bunker to coordinate the response.
But Israel knew that emergency protocol, and the location of the bunker. They destroyed it, killing the overall commander and the heads of the drone and air defense forces. “The fact that there was nobody to give the order neutralized an immediate Iranian response,” an Israeli official said.
They were among the more than two dozen Iranian commanders targeted in a sprawling attack on Iran’s military command-and-control. The heads of the IRGC, the Iranian military and Iran’s emergency military headquarters were all eliminated in the opening salvo.
Another key target was Iran’s air defense systems and radars. Israeli intelligence mapped their locations, and most were hit by the Israeli Air Force in the opening strike. That gave the IDF virtually unchallenged freedom of operation in Iran’s skies.
Meanwhile on the ground, Israel’s Mossad spy agency was conducting a series of covert sabotage operations deep inside Iran to take out air defenses and ballistic missile launchers. . . .
n central Iran, Mossad commando units had positioned guided weapons systems in open areas near Iranian surface-to-air missile launchers.
In another area inside Iran, Mossad covertly deployed weapon systems and sophisticated technologies hidden in vehicles. When the Israeli attack began, these weapons were launched and destroyed Iranian air defense targets.

You see why I started out with a Godfather allusion. Like Michael Corleone eliminating the heads of rival Mafia gangs, Israel is settling all the family business in Iran. And they’re just so much smarter than the Iranians, it almost seems unfair. Can you imagine the kind of long-term surveillance and planning that went into this operation? Like, figuring out where the Iranian air force leaders would meet in an emergency, mapping out the location of that bunker, giving them some kind of signal of an impending attack, then watching them scurry to their bunker and — WHAM! — you took out the leadership at the outset of the campaign, so “that there was nobody to give the order” for the Iranian counter-attack. Meanwhile, you’ve got Mossad spies sneaking around all over Iran, ready to play their part in wrecking the enemy’s air defenses, so that the Israeli Air Force can fly in without danger of getting shot down.

One standard deviation — it’s a lethal advantage.
