De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum

The Democratic Party tradition of dying in office can be traced to Franklin Delano Roosevelt who, in 1940, chose to seek reelection for a third term, breaking the two-term precedent set by George Washington. Then in 1944, FDR had the excuse of World War II to seek a fourth term in the White House, even though at that point it was clear that he probably didn’t have much longer to live. True, there have been Republicans who emulated FDR’s example, but in general it’s Democrats who cling to office until they join the choir invisible. We should not therefore use the occasion of Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s death to criticize her for staying in the Senate long past the point where she was capable of discharging the duties of her office. She was a Democrat, and that’s what Democrats always do, if they can. In the one-party state that is the People’s Republic of California, there was never a chance that Feinstein could have lost to a Republican. The only question now is, which Democrat will succeed her to become the state’s next Senator-for-life.

Heh heh heh heh. Whatever Governor Hairgel does, identity politics is certain to turn the fight for Feinstein’s seat into intra-party warfare.

As I explained a few months ago, it was already rumored that Feinstein, who would have been up for reelection in 2024, would instead retire. Young “progressive” firebrand Rep. Katie Porter was the first to throw her hat in the ring, but black Democrats in California believed they were entitled to Feinstein’s seat. Now the price has come due:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s death Friday puts enormous political pressure on Gov. Gavin Newsom to pick a successor acceptable to Black Democrats, who are already furious at him for his ideas about a replacement.
After replacing Sen. Kamala Harris, the Senate’s only Black woman, with Sen. Alex Padilla in 2021, Newsom told MSNBC’s Joy Reid that if he had to appoint someone else to the Senate, it would be a Black woman.
Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, who’s running for Feinstein’s seat next year, would appear to be a logical choice. But Newsom last month said he would name a Black woman on an interim basis to complete Feinstein’s term, which ends in January 2025.
He spoke about his decision on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where moderator Chuck Todd said, “it would be essentially a caretaker—an African American woman?”
Newsom replied, “We hope we never have to make this decision, but I abide by what I’ve said very publicly on a consistent basis. Yes.”
He explained that choosing one of the Democrats running for the full term — Reps. Adam Schiff and Katie Porter are also candidiates — “would be completely unfair to the Democrats that have worked their tail off. That primary is just a matter of months away. I don’t want to tip the balance of that.”
That ignited a political firestorm, as Lee and others protested. “The idea that a Black woman should be appointed only as a caretaker to simply check a box is insulting to countless Black women across this country who have carried the Democratic Party to victory election after election,” she tweeted shortly after Newsom made his comments.

So now we get Adam Schiff and Katie Porter in a racial mud-wrestling match with Barbara Lee, in a state where 40% of the population is Hispanic. Thank you for your excellent timing, Senator Feinstein!

Still ‘No Evidence’ of Biden Corruption?

Posted on | September 26, 2023 | Comments Off on Still ‘No Evidence’ of Biden Corruption?

Gonna be kind of hard for Democrats to spin this one:

Hunter Biden received wires that originated in Beijing for more than $250,000 from Chinese business partners during the summer of 2019 — wires that listed the Delaware home of Joe Biden as the beneficiary address for the funds, Fox News Digital has learned from a congressional committee.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., has been investigating the Biden family business dealings and President Biden’s alleged involvement in those ventures.
As part of the investigation, Comer subpoenaed financial records related to a specific bank account and received records of two wires originating from Beijing and linked to BHR Partners.
BHR Partners is a joint-venture between Hunter Biden’s Rosemont Seneca and Chinese investment firm Bohai Capital. BHR Partners is a Beijing-backed private equity firm controlled by Bank of China Limited. Hunter Biden reportedly sat on the board of directors of BHR Partners.
The first wire transfer sent to Hunter Biden, dated July 26, 2019, was for $10,000 from an individual named Ms. Wang Xin. There is a Ms. Wang Xin listed on the website for BHR Partners. It is unclear if the wire came from that Wang Xin.
The second wire transfer sent to Hunter Biden, dated Aug. 2, 2019, was for $250,000 from Li Xiang Sheng — also known as Jonathan Li, the CEO of BHR Partners — and Ms. Tan Ling. The committee is trying to identify Ling’s role.
The beneficiary for the wires is listed as Robert Hunter Biden with the address “1209 Barley Mill Rd.” in Wilmington, Delaware. That address is the main residence for President Biden.

This was after Biden had declared his 2020 campaign. Even as he was telling everybody he knew nothing about his son’s foreign business deals, hundreds of thousands of dollars from China were being wired to his home address. Still no grounds for impeachment, eh?

‘Who Fought for Ukrainian Independence Against the Russians’ in WWII?

Posted on | September 25, 2023 | Comments Off on ‘Who Fought for Ukrainian Independence Against the Russians’ in WWII?

Sometimes the Godwin’s Law jokes write themselves:

Following addresses to the parliament in Ottowa on Friday from both [Canadian Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau and [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky, the Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota prompted a standing ovation as he honoured a “veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of 98.”
“His name is Yaroslav Hunka… he is a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service,” Rota continued before a second round of applause.
In the caption of a picture published by the Associated Press showing Zelensky and Trudeau standing and applauding Hunka, the news wire service identified Hunka as a former member of the “First Ukrainian Division in World War II”. The division is also known as the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician), a division comprised mostly of Ukrainian volunteers after being established by Nazi Germany in 1943. . . .
In a Ukrainian language post on the blog Combatant News attributed to Hunak, he claimed to have joined the Nazi military division in 1943. The post also featured pictures of himself during the war, including his apparent training by the SS in Munich.
Ivan Katchanovski of the University of Ottowa described the celebration of Hunka as “truly unbelievable” and an “epic scandal“, questioning: “Did anyone in parliament or Zelensky realize that he served in [the] Waffen SS division?”

This is how childishly simple-minded liberals are: Whatever they like is good, and whatever they dislike is evil. During the Cold War, conservatives were willing to tolerate various authoritarians as allies in opposition to Soviet-backed Communist revolutionaries, a doctrine explained by Jeane Kirkpatrick in an influential article, “Dictatorships and Double Standards.” Meanwhile, liberals were stamping their feet and throwing tantrums about “human rights” in Latin America, Africa and other places, where pro-Western governments were in a life-or-death struggle with Moscow-backed terrorists like the murderous Sandinistas in Nicaragua. Liberals were so fascinated with their own rhetoric about “human rights” — an intellectual abstraction — that they were unable to see that Marxist victories in such situations would mean the annihilation of thousands, and whatever “rights” they may have had.

Well, the Cold War ended, and liberals expect us all to forget how wrong they were about everything back then, and now they’ve climbed onto a new hobby horse, where Russia and Putin are the bogeymen, which becomes an excuse to ignore the much greater threat posed by Communist China. And, because they think of the proxy war against Putin as an expression of their moral superiority, liberals are utterly blind to any problems with their friends in Ukraine. So you have the liberals in the Canadian parliament applauding a literal Nazi, and if you object to this . . . Well, you’re a right-wing extremist and probably racist, too.

A very good week for the Senators as we hosted the Giants and Angels at RFK this week; we won two out of three in each series, getting Juan Marichal his 15th win and Jim Kaat his 9th. This week will be a little tougher since we face the Yankees on Tuesday and the Reds on Friday, but if we can pull a .500 week off, I’ll be happy. Pete’s Brewers have already embraced their fate and are in the process of rebuilding for next year with draft picks.
