‘You Could See Him As A Thinner Chris Christie’

PowerLine embeds a Pawlenty stump speech, and floats the idea of a 2012 run:

Tim Pawlenty is a likable fellow. When he came to Virginia to support Bob McDonnell in 2009, I enjoyed his stump speedspeech at very close range. He seems to be about as moderate a candidate as you’ll find without major RINO drawbacks.

A major question for a Pawlenty candidacy will be foreign policy.  The current administration is on a trajectory to leave a crap sandwich of biblical proportions for its successor.

Domestically, Let Freedom Ring has a fairly extensive Pawlenty play-by-play. If anything, my concern would be that Pawlenty may be too nice. We need leadership with an attitude towards Progressive policies along the lines of, to paraphrase Gen. James Mattis:

Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody Socialist program you meet.

Seriously. Political tenable plans will be about transitioning away from the culture of dependency the Progressives have been sowing. To what degree does Pawlenty recognize the evil? To what degree is he committed to emancipating Americans from Progressive evil, and to what degree is he, like so many RINOs, prepared to compromise his way into letting the evil snooze until it can re-spawn?
This is the same set of questions on which every GOP candidate should stand and deliver.

We need someone who’s not afraid to use the “S” word. We also need a concerted effort to make terms like “Social Democrats” become the common name for the Democratic party. The latest polls showed over fifty percent of Americans think that Socialist is at least somewhat accurate as a descriptor for Obama. This time last year Socialist was considered the new “N” word.

T-Paw is my governor in Minnesota, and he has the distinction of driving the local Dims insane. He is a well spoken, Republican who has moved a bit further to the right as the years have gone by. That being said, he did run McCain’s campaign in Minn. He – like Norm Coleman – has good positions, but I feel they are both a bit too pragmatic, and will compromise too much.

    The unallotment maneuver was inspired…

I bet Pawlenty would have a few tricks up his sleeve as president.

Only trouble with him is I just don’t see the ruthless style in him…

Still, solid guy. Didn’t care for his Sam’s Club Republican push, but whatever.

He’s had the chance that Palin, Romney, Huckabee have to market himself but his name hasn’t gotten anywhere. Wonder why he’s the story today.

On the other hand, his lack of name recognition could be a plus as he’s propelled as the fresh face to snag the primaries. He could be on perfect timing..

Of the current and former Governors once thought to be the GOP’s bench, Daniels is unexciting, Sanford self-destructed, Palin is the target of the media, Romney bears the albatross of his health care plan in MA, and Huckabee can’t sell his history of hiking taxes and pardoning felons to anyone beyond his evangelical base. That leaves Christie, looking strong but with limited experience and more tough decisions ahead, and Pawlenty, who has labored in Minnesota, a state which most often fluctuates between blue and just plain weird (Ventura, Franken).

I think RINO is a pretty harsh description of Pawlenty. He’s probably had at least as much success in restraining irresponsible spending in his Democratic legislature as Sanford has with a Republican legislature in conservative SC.

Not that I’m ready to back him yet, but if we disqualify any Republican from a blue state who has fought the good fight but compromised a few times, we are limiting our choices to a very small pool of purists.

I like Barbour, but can’t yet see him catching on nationally against Obama. I like Christie too, but he is not ready for national prime time. But that is what primaries are for, to let us get used to a candidate and see if the match is a good one. Like any dating service, it is flawed (McCain, Romeny and Huckabee come to mine).

Sleepy Time Tim doesn’t stand a chance.

He needs to explain his Human-caused Global Warming stance, why he let the senatorial election get so screwed up in his state, and why he was such a milque-toast “supporter” of McCain last time.

He needs to do it in a manner that is not better than Sominex at putting you to sleep.
