Lefties Go Nuts as Anti-Defamation League Opposes Ground Zero Mosque
Posted on | July 30, 2010 | 28 Comments
Pamela Geller is surely laughing herself silly at this spectacle:
The Anti-Defamation League, which describes itself as “the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry,” released a statment this morning opposing the building of the 13-story mosque near Ground Zero.
“In our judgment, building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain – unnecessarily – and that is not right,” says the ADL.
OK, so the ADL — historically, a liberal organization — feels compelled to side with Pamela and all those right-wingers who opposed the mosque. As you might expect, the Left is not taking this news cheerfully:
ADL: Some opponents of Ground Zero mosque are bigots, but we should let them win anyway
– Greg Sergeant, Washington PostADL Condemns, Enables, Anti-Muslim Bigotry
– Adam Serwer, American Prospect
And perhaps sweetest of all:
The ADL Backs Palin Against The Cordoba Mosque
– Andrew Sullivan, Atlantic Monthly
Will update when Charles Johnson reacts. Here’s a preview:

I oppose this mosque because I believe it to be a propaganda ploy financed by those who think 9/11 was a good thing (or at a minimum think there are grievances that the 9/11 attacks attempted to address). I also opposed the so called International Freedom Center. That was a proposed secular Soros/public funded project. The Cordoba Islamic Center seems to be a new twist on that, from a private Islamic perspective.
But I also support the first amendment and property rights, so if this group bought the property fair and square, follow zoning and other laws, there is not a lot that can be done to stop them. That does not mean I have to like it, or that I am anti Islamic or racist in not liking it.
And that also means I support Pam Geller, the anti defamation league or anyone else (including 9/11 victim families) speaking out against it.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:06 pm
Free speech means free speech for everyone, right? Even Pam Geller.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:20 pm
I suggest Sergeant, Serwer, Sully, and CJ all take a trip to lower Sudan or upper Nigeria to see the effects of Sharia in practice. Of course, Iran or Yemen might well teach the same lesson – the Saudis are a bit more circumspect about enforcing it upon foreign nationals.
Perhaps the lads could visit Mecca (in Arabic drag, of course), and reveal themselves at a shrine and see what happens.
Punk-ast bee-yotches.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:36 pm
I am against anything Palin is for and for anything Palin is against. It is really that simple.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:39 pm
Resistance to Sharia is merely resistance to one element of Islam’s attempted conquest of the world. The purpose of the Islamic Center near ground zero is an effort to turn their tactical victory on Sept. 11, 2001 into a strategic victory. The Free Speech arguments and references to Skokie do not apply. The court ruled that the Nazis had a right to march thru and give speeches in the largely Jewish community of Skokie Ill.. They did not have the right to erect and leave behind a permanent swastika.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:40 pm
Today the Anti-Defamation League surprisingly and inexplicably released a statement opposing the Park51 community center: Statement On Islamic Community Center Near Ground Zero.
For a civil rights organization to take the position that feelings are more important than civil rights is, frankly, stunning.
And it’s even more stunning that the ADL acknowledges the open bigotry of many Park51 opponents, but still very publicly supports them.
Humorist Will Rogers once said about the repeal of Prohibition, “Repeal is all right, but the wrong people are for it.” The wrong people are against Park51, and if Abe Foxman and the ADL can’t keep their personal feelings out of the issue, they should have just kept quiet instead of handing the Bigot Brigade a public relations gift. What a disgrace.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:53 pm
Oh like Muslims aren’t bigoted? Maybe you could say something about their vile anti Jewish statements.
July 30th, 2010 @ 3:58 pm
Hmmm, yes…an organization whose stated goal is to ” stop the defamation of the Jewish people” opposes a Muslim mosque. yep. No conflicts there!
What’s more surprising is that Joe seems to be the only one around here to get it. Freedom of religion is what it is, like it or not.It is what separates US from THEM. Those who seek to stop this project from moving forward risk becoming what they hate/fear the most. That does not mean you can’t express your discomfort with it.
Estrogen, as usual, wins psycho rant of the day( although it’s still early).
Yes Estrogen, your hormones are kicking into gear at the thought of Sharia law.Aww, has Newt gotten to you with his ridiculous fear mongering about Sharia law in the U.S.???
Of course, a mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero is the harbinger of an eventual change in the way we practice law.And Newt Gingrich will be the next POTUS.HAHA!
Hey moron, get a grip will ya?!
July 30th, 2010 @ 4:03 pm
An organization whose stated goal is to stop the defamation of the Jewish people opposes a building by a group (religion?) that not only defames but wants to kill Jews? Everybody has a line and the Muslims have crossed it.
July 30th, 2010 @ 4:11 pm
“The court ruled that the Nazis had a right to march thru and give speeches in the largely Jewish community of Skokie Ill.. They did not have the right to erect and leave behind a permanent swastika.”
Spoke too soon about psycho rant of the day…
Adobe Walls:
Muslims=Nazi
Mosque= Swastika
Adobe Walls = frist rate retard
Adobe wants to confuse a house of worship with a graphic symbol because , well because it makes him feel better.
Ahhh… can you smell all that religious tolerance from the Right?
July 30th, 2010 @ 4:18 pm
Kansas, I’m sure the anti-defamation league would be very understanding if Muslims here in the U.S. would be offended by the building of a synagogue near their communities. They’d be the first ones to cater to the hurt feelings of others, right?
But let’s not lump the ignorance of a few who claim to represent their religion to the whole.
You can’t condone ignorance with more ignorance.
Then again, the Right has been running with that theme for 30 years now….
July 30th, 2010 @ 4:50 pm
Big frigging deal.
The ADL long ago became irrelevant accept among its small minority of old liberal Jews too tired to think for themselves anymore
July 30th, 2010 @ 5:19 pm
Jews are smart enough not to build synagogues in Muslim neighborhoods: (a) because that’s not where their likely congregants are, and (b) because they don’t want them
vandalized/burnt to the ground. Just saying.
July 30th, 2010 @ 5:26 pm
And young4eyes’s head explodes, right on schedule. Dance, monkey, dance!
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:10 pm
i like how young4eyes defends muslim anti-semetism but yet demands we tolerate islam
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:10 pm
http://www.redstate.com/veronicaestrada/2010/07/23/crescent-to-mecca-at-flight-93-crash-site-another-islamic-conquest/
“Few people know that this giant crescent actually points to Mecca, or understand the religious significance of this orientation. A crescent that points the direction to Mecca is a very familiar construct in the Islamic world. Because Muslims face Mecca for prayer , every mosque is built around a Mecca direction indicator called a mihrab. The classic mihrab is crescent shaped. Here are the two most famous mihrabs in the world:”
There is a theme…
If you think it’s about freedom of religion, please explain this monstrosity
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:19 pm
What’s more surprising is that Joe seems to be the only one around here to get it.
Not surprising at all. I am always right. You young4eyes are a broken clock who is right twice a day. I just stand by that old axiom that I may disagree with what you are saying, but I will defend your right to say it. I am also a civil libertarian.
But I know that Cordoba Islamic Center is up to no good. Hence I support Geller, the Anti Defamation League, and Palin’s criticism of it.
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:21 pm
Sunlight is the best disinfectant. And Kejda is pasty faced and dirty.
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:22 pm
[...] Different, yet related. ADL drives left nuts by opposing the Ground Zero mosque. The Other McCain. [...]
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:38 pm
Final Design
Van Grungy: Mistake or intentional? Even assuming a mistake, I am surprised the design committee picked a red crescent from all the submissions made. Why not a circle? Why the crescent given the Islamic nature of the attack? And a red one at that (I think the maples along the arc are sugar or red maples specifically).
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:48 pm
Stacy,
Thanks for the post.
The ADL’s position is rather puzzling.
Whoever the troll is above – Chuckles or a sockie – the LGF brand reminds one of week-old porkchops… left on the back porch in summer. Thanks, but I’ll pass.
July 30th, 2010 @ 6:52 pm
It’s intentional.
http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2010/07/911-hero-family-member-ground-zero-mosque-is-the-second-mosque-being-built-on-a-911-site-.html
From Atlas comments….
Who told the Park Service that a mihrab has to point exactly at Mecca to be legitimate? It was Nasser Rabbat, a professor of Islamic architecture at MIT and an expert in the history of mosque design. No one knows better than Professor Rabbat that mihrab orientation does NOT have to be exact.
There is only one reason why Rabbat would lie to the Park Service about such a basic fact. He recognizes that the giant Mecca-oriented crescent at the heart of the Flight 93 memorial IS a legitimate mihrab, and he wants this al Qaeda sympathizing plot to succeed. A look at Rabbat’s background shows that he was a classmate of Crescent of Embrace architect Paul Murdoch, both getting masters degrees in architecture from UCLA in 1984 and both doing their masters work on Middle Easter subjects. (Murdoch wrote a “masters project” titled: “A museum for Haifa, Israel.” Rabbat wrote a master thesis on house design in Cairo and Damascus.) his prior connection between Murdoch and Rabbat raises the possibility that Murdoch himself was able to orchestrate the Park Service investigation into warnings about his own design. By the same token, having the two classmates both show up in the Flight 93 memorial raises the possibility that Rabbat was Murdoch’s source of expertise on how to incorporate the full complement of typical mosque features into his Crescent design. (For the dozen typical mosque features, see Crescent of Embrace, chapter 5.)

The most amazing thing to me about the libruls is that they invariably take the wrong side on every topic. It’s like they wake each day and say what is the new, good, common-sense thing going on today and what will be my arguments for opposing it.
“No Christian churches nor Jewish temples in Saudi Arabia? No problem. I’m jake with that. 9/11? We asked for it didn’t we! They want to build a memorial? How can I fxyz that up? I know, let’s make sure it is also a memorial that honors those who attacked us on 9/11. That’s the ticket.”
August 1st, 2010 @ 4:31 am
Those of the Left who argue loudly about the inviolability of “civil rights” would do well to heed the words of one Thomas Jefferson, who wrote “To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to the written law, would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the ends to the means.” But then again, they most likely do not believe that the Islamists do in fact intend to defeat us. The mosque is a thumb in the eye, intended to blind us to their other activities aimed at our destruction.
