PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS HQ UPDATE: O’DONNELL WINS!

Delaware

DOVER, Delaware
UPDATE 10:40 p.m. ET — In an impr0mptu press conference following her victory speech, Christine O’Donnell was asked about reports that those treacherous bastards at the NRSC won’t support her campaign, and replied far more graciously than I would have: “For the greater good, we’re putting this [e.g., Castle’s smear campaign] behind us,” she said. “Together, we can win.”

UPDATE 9:25 p.m. — It’s a real celebration here now. The music right now is deafening: U2’s “Beautiful Day.” Here’s video of earlier, when the first results were reported on TV:

UPDATE 9 p.m. Christine O’Donnell has won the Delaware GOP Senate primary, defeating Mike Castle, Allahpundit, Charles Krauthammer, and Jim Geraghty.  With 75% of precincts reporting, O’Donnell leads 53%-46%. Dan Riehl is reportedly offering pudding to Ace of Spades. The DJ here is playing Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion.”

UPDATE 8:34 p..m. –Cheers of “Go, Christine!” here at the Elks Lodge that is O’Donnell HQ, as she leads with 55% to 45% for that worthless RINO with 14% of precincts reporting.

PREVIOUSLY: I’m at Christine O’Donnell campaign victory headquarters at the Elks Lodge. No fewer than seven TV satellite trucks are in the parking lot. I’m seated at the press table between Alex Pappas of the Daily Caller and Robert Costa of the RINO-endorsing National Review.

You people talk about the NRSC like dogs all the time, falsely accuse them of trying to steal the Alaska primary (never recanted, and repeated above by one of the commenters, but a 100% LIE), and then you wonder why they don’t write your candidate a check?

If the stakes weren’t so high, the stupidity would be hilarious.

I wouldn’t be stunned if she made race of it, after all…

As Henry Kissinger said about the Iran- Iraq war– “Too bad they can’t both lose.” Nothing about this campaign removed the huge numbers of questions and criticisms I have about Ms. O’Donnell but the way that the Establishment went all out to slime her made me think that the Del. Republican Party might have been second only to FL for corruption.

The fact that folks are still blasting her post-election (i.e. Karl Rove, NRSC) either tells me that the fit is going to hit the shan post-primary and we are going to have huge buyers remorse, or that the Republican establishment is universally idiotic to the point of political suicide. I’d place equal money on each proposition, but O’Donnell is the Republican nominee and I support her for the seat.

Maybe we’ll discover after the election that the RNC, RNSC and RNCC decided to play these roles by making themselves the target and let their candidates run free and clear against the party.

Hey, it makes more sense than any of the other explanations…

    Five Reasons O’Donnell Could Win
    —Ace
    1. Coons could always self-implode. There is a small but nontrivial chance any politician will simply blow up. Odds are maybe 2% of that, but it’s somethin’.

    2. Coons isn’t ideologically suited for Delaware himself. He’s called a “bearded Marxist” — he too may be too extreme for Delaware. Thus, we’d have a Republican too far to the right battling a Democrat too far to the left. Not great chances, but not an impossible longshot, either.

    3. Coons may not be a great practical candidate, either. Mike Castle just wins elections — until now — so when he entered the race no more experienced Republican challenged him. And, I think, no serious Democrat rose to the challenge, either. Just Coons. (In fact, he was unopposed for the nomination — apparently no one else wanted it, like O’Donnell versus Biden.) So he’s not a superman, either.

    4. O’Donnell could actually grow as a candidate. She’s got a serious amount of work to do, and I don’t know if she can do it. But until now she has been entirely on the defensive against attacks from within her party (which is something that has caused a lot of anger among her supporters). Now she’s freed up from the constant defenses to do something besides all that. Will she rise? Probably. Enough? Probably not — but who knows.

    5. The Red Wave might even be bigger than we thought. Actually, I don’t know about this one, because I was already thinking of an even bigger Red Wave than most people were and even my big Red Wave, in my mind at least, wasn’t enough to do the trick. But with a little help from Coons, and a little help from herself… who knows.

If any mix of those above reasons pan out, the O’Donnell backers will look like geniuses, because there is no doubt, we will have traded a very light purple Castle for a very red O’Donnell. That will be some trick, a deep-red Senator in a blue state.

I don’t think any of that will happen. That is why I have contended so hard against this, what I think is an emotion-based move.

    But.

    It could happen.

Congrats to O’Donnell. Looks like the “OMG Castle voted to impeach Bush!!!” gambit gave her enough of a boost to get over the top. I doubt it’ll help her much in the general, though.

Also, I can understand why the party apparatus says they won’t spend any money to support her. When you run on a “f*ck the establishment” platform, you don’t get to whine and complain when the establishment says “f*ck you” right back.

It’s always bad politics to not at least congratulate the candidate who supposedly is closer to the principals you stand for, even if you don’t believe she’s electable.

Off the top of my head:
“We’re proud of the Delaware GOP for refusing to compromise, and we’ll work with them to see the most reasonable approach in what might now be a much more difficult race to the average Delaware voter.”

Or you could choose on-it’s-way-out Bush era bitching and stupidity: “Not one cent! The Tea Party wants her, the tea party’s got her! WAAAAH!”

    Tough choice.
