Who Is John Galt?

Posted on | March 2, 2011 | 11 Comments

The makers of the new movie Atlas Shrugged: Part I have invited me to an exclusive screening today in Washington, D.C. Here’s the trailer:

They’ve taken a huge gamble, producing this ambitious film under a tight deadline and on a tight budget.

During the CPAC blogger bash at FreedomWorks, they previewed four scenes from the movie. Clearly, they’re hoping to generate major buzz before the film’s theatrical release on April 15.

Yeah: Tax Day. Pretty clever.

I hope it turns out well.

I am not a huge fan of Atlas Shrugged (more of style and lack of editting than anything else), although I think the Fountainhead is a great novel. I like Ayn Rand, even if she was almost certainly a strange nasty piece of work in real life. But I agree on her underlying theme of Objectivism, that the driving force of creativity is the individual. And she had a keen eye for the social forces that work to tear down those who dare to do something new (and no Charlie Sheen, while you might consider yourself Howard Rourke, you are more of a Peter Keating).

To play off Steyn’s observations about the Oscars, I hope that Atlas Shugged turns out more like The King’s Speech* than The Social Network.

    * The King’s Speech is about duty and obligation and rising to a challenge of impending evil. Atlas Shrugged is about ego, creativity, property, and withdrawing from a world that becomes intollerable. The King’s Speech is history. Atlas Shrugged is allegorical and more akin to a graphic novel or comic book (in the best sense of what that media can be).

You could make the argument that King Edward was the egotist in the King’s Speech, but Nietzschian superman he was not. Again, he was more of a Keating. Weak. Pathetic.

Given Obama wants to do these high speed rail lines all over the country, the Rearden steel and Tagart rail imagry has me worried.

    Or maybe it will work.

If Obama put Dagny Taggart and Frank Rearden in charge…nah, never happen. Can’t see either of them giving a bent penny to his campaign coffers.
