Hateful Atrocity as Transvestite Beaten by Christian Fundamentalists. Oh, Wait …

Posted on | April 22, 2011 | 66 Comments

By now you’ve probably seen the viral video in which a woman (or, according to the guy who shot the video, a transvestite) was beaten senseless by two teenage girls in a McDonald’s restaurant:

It appears that the victim used the women’s restroom, and these two teenagers decided to appoint themselves the Anti-Drag-Queen Vigilante Committee of Rosedale, Maryland. The horrible sadism of this crime — the perpetrators returning to beat the defenseless victim over and over again – is shocking to watch. Indeed, it “says quite a bit about where we are as a culture,” as Bryan Preston observes. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Sun reports:

State’s Attorney Scott D. Shellenberger said the racial dynamics of the incident — the attackers are black, and the victim is white — could result in hate-crime charges.

Can you imagine the political uproar if the attackers had been right-wing Tea Party types? Perhaps we can ask Paul Krugman to favor us with another one of his “climate of hate” sermons.

What an awful story. Has there been any update on how the victim is doing?

    Reportedly hospitalized in “satisfactory” condition.

Yeah, that was bad, and I don’t condone it, but look, what if a regular guy just availed himself of the women’s restroom facilities? These kinds of people need to realize they are playing with fire to begin with. What if your wives or daughters had to use a public bathroom, and about halfway through all of a sudden there’s some dude standing there? What if your daughter is only nine or ten? Would you have a cavalier, live and let live attitude if some drag queen started chatting her up while he was in there with her, taking a piss?

I have several points to make, so please bear with me.

First, I disagree with you including “Gays” as one of the categories. I fail to see how that has anything to do with what you wrote or what was in the video.

Second, although some men who dress as women (and vice versa), such as Eddie Izzard, still use the term “transvestite”, it has come to have so many negative connotations that, depending on where a person is on the broad spectrum of gender, many refer to themselves as transgendered (TG, which is the “T” in GLBT) or crossdressers (CD) instead.

Next, it seems like the biggest problem the attackers had was that the victim wanted to use a gender-segregated restroom they felt was not appropriate. This could very easily be solved if we, like many other countries, simply stopped putting gender signs on bathrooms and took the urinals out.

Finally, I disagree that this was in any way racially motivated, but I also disagree that there should be any such thing as a hate crime. I realize that you were not arguing for or against such a category but merely stating the possibility of such charges, but as long as people are called out in laws as protected classes (whether they be discrimination laws, bullying laws or hate laws), they inherently set themselves apart as different. Whatever the maximum punishment for a “hate crime” is should be the maximum punishment for that same crime perpetrated against anyone. Equal rights should always be equal.

Yeah, agreed his action is not something we should consider acceptable. Still, one wonders if there were a more appropriate response to this case, something short of beating him half to death.

And RSC’s point is also well taken – if the perpetrators had been someone else (perhaps someone Eric Holder does not consider “his people”) the Mainly Stupid Media would be harping on this from now until November 2012.

    What a dingbat!
Your a bigger threat to our society than those two perps!!

First, Ms. Mabey: If it’s politically correct sensitivity you’re seeking, you’ve obviously come to the wrong blog.

“Gays” is just a catch-all category, like “Celebrities” or “Foreigners,” and not a value judgment. Given that this crime seems to involve issues of gender-identity and/or sexuality — see? I can use PC language after all! — it was categorized under “gays.” That’s a rather broad category, but I try not to proliferate categories unnecessarily. And as the categories are merely a way for me (and readers) to keep track of the subject matter here, so what?

Your quibbles over the term “transvestite”: Cross-dresser, transgender, drag queen, shemale, tranny — does it really matter so much what we call people? And to whom does it matter? Am I inciting “hate” against a group of people if I fail to use the preferred term? Or rather (as I usually intend when employing un-PC language), am I merely making a small protest against the goddamned Stalinist commissars who are constantly on the lookout for thoughtcrimes?

In this particular case, we have no way of knowing the victim’s intent. Is this a person who lives full-time in a female persona? Is this someone who has intention of one day undergoing sex-reassignment surgery? Or is this just a man in a dress? Given our lack of knowledge about such matters, “transvestite” is minimally accurate — and it fits in the headline, where “cross-dresser” would be too long.

Finally, I agree with you that the concept of “hate crimes” is legally and politically problematic. Nevertheless, we live in the world we live in, not some ideal world of our imaginative desires, and if the prosecutor believes he can prove that this crime was motivated by racial bias, then the crime is more than mere assault.

Does it really matter who it was? Geez enough with the little boxes, beating the life out of anything is disgusting and wrong. Who are these people that are so angry they have to almost murder someone? I see what the establishment games that have been played starting to bubble up. What these progressive evil things have done to people will come back at them hard, all is being exposed, God help us.

  • http://thepagantemple.blogspot.com/ ThePaganTemple

Yeah the most appropriate response would be arresting him for being a man purposely using a women’s restroom. But on the other hand, the city probably wouldn’t file charges against him, and if they put him in overnight lock-up there’s even a chance some idiotic group might file a lawsuit. They would more than likely lose, but it would still be time and money. So more than likely they would just tell him to leave and not come back. And more than likely, he would do the same thing all over again, maybe even in the same place.

Another point. This was in all likelihood a transvestite prostitute, a bigger problem than you might think in some inner cities. I seriously doubt he was just an innocent customer who just happens to like to go about in women’s clothing.

All that does in no way shape or fashion excuse the beating, certainly not the severity of it. I’m just pointing out we’re probably not getting the full context on this one particular video.

  • MrPaulRevere

Bryan Preston is right, this is pretty sick any way you cut it. And I would take any statement from the videographer with a mountain of salt, he has an interest in minimizing his legal liability.

  • http://twitter.com/oldrightblogger oldrightblogger

Okay, now it’s time to get real. The tranny was WHITE the chicks were black.

Richard Spencer has just been validated.

    Can you say, Negro Fascism?

    I’m just damn sayin’

  • http://twitter.com/oldrightblogger oldrightblogger

Finally, I disagree that this was in any way racially motivated,

    The HELL it wasn’t!

If that would have been a black gay man or tranny and two white girls or guys had been beating them, it would have been all over. But because it was two jiggaboos it didn’t fit the narrative. Hence the silence in the media.

That’s right mother fuckers, I called them two black bitches damned Jiggaboos. We be’s, Porch Monkeys, boot lips — all the same. Those were not upstanding black girls. Those were Negro Thugs, like the kind that live here in Detroit. Like the kind that I won’t allow in my neighborhood.

Time to get real people, know your enemies and shoot them, if need be.

I’m local to the D.C. area.

Transvestite prostitutes, black or white, are not well received in the black community. It just so happens that this particular beating was caught on film. Such beatings, perhaps not quite a serious, occur on a regular basis in the greater D.C. area, particularly in downtown D.C. and Baltimore.

    Just sayin’.

“the crime is more than mere assault. ”

Only because the actual crime is assault and battery. Might even rise to attempted murder. But unless the attackers can prove it was in some way justified (self-defense, etc.), I couldn’t care less why they did it, and it’s about two steps to “thoughtcrime” to try to prove otherwise.

  • Anonymous

Well, then they can just deal. No one says transvestites have to be invited to dinner, but they have the same right to use the street as anyone else, and if beatings like that happen on a regular basis, then some extra law enforcement effort is called for.

I think what AOW was saying is the crime wasn’t a matter of black on white crime, it was an assault based on the person’s gender orientation. In plainer language, they probably attacked him not because he was white, but because he was a tranny using a woman’s restroom facilities.

In all likelihood, if the tranny had not gone into the restroom, those women would have not harassed him, or at least would not have beat him. By the same token, if he had been black, they probably would have beat the living shit out of him if he had been in the women’s bathroom. In fact, although I have no way of knowing it for sure, my guess is if it had been a black tranny they probably would have beat him a whole hell of a lot worse.

Maryland, my lovely state. Baltimore, the city that Nancy Pelosi’s daddy built with the mafia by his side. And don’t forget Martin O’Malley–who is being groomed for the National stage as we speak, and the more recent Sheila Dixon who was booted from the mayorship for stealing gift cards. Didn’t Maryland just pass a law banning discrimination against Transgenders in mArch–especially when it pertains to use of public bathrooms? Hope the victim, if she recovers from the vicious kick to the base of her skull -if her brain stem is still intact that is, hope she sues the city, McDonalds and those vicious animals that attacked and those who stood by.

“This could very easily be solved if we, like many other countries, simply stopped putting gender signs on bathrooms and took the urinals out.”

    Right.

    First, name those countries.

Second, how does that solve the problem? All you’ve done is open BOTH restrooms to EVERYONE.

Third, why should society keep bending to accommodate the emotional issues of, what, 0.5% of the population? Absolutely no one deserves to be attacked, but why should we eliminate unisex restrooms? And is that really the way to keep barbarians from acting out their every violent impulse?

Here’s my solution: flay these two animals in public. Make examples of them. Repeat as needed.

And like rapes in jail, because they are common we should not be repulsed or shocked.

Yes. we keep handing out these vetoes to various emotional groups, and are then surprised when the collide. So the solution is to ban segregated (by sex) toilets. But at the same time, we’ve got feminists who demand segregated (by sex) facilities like gyms. How exactly do the Mabeys of the world intend to resolve these conflicts? By more post hoc decrees, probably.

  • Raoul Ortega

hope [the victim] sues the city, McDonalds

Why sue McDonald’s or the city? What exactly did they do wrong here?

As for the bystanders, they are under no obligation to intervene. More so, sue-happy people like you have made such “good samaritans” liable for their intervention.

If he had tried to use the men’s restroom dressed like that, chances are he would have gotten beat up by men, and that would be even worse. I feel sorry for people like that, neither one thing or the other.

You know if done often enough that type of “kinetic” punishment (impalement for identity theft) while perhaps cruel, would no longer be unusual.

  • http://thepagantemple.blogspot.com/ ThePaganTemple

If I decide to attend a traditional religious service at some Christian denomination church, I’m going to dress in a traditional suit and tie, or at least some kind of nice leisure outfit. You won’t see me going dressed in cut-off tie dies, sandals, or maybe with a leather skull cap with viking horns complete with sword in scabbard and rough looking fur vest. In other words, I’m going to dress appropriate to the venue and occasion.

The same rule of thumb holds true here. There are all kinds of places geared toward that particular type of clientele. They have restroom facilities, and they serve food and drink. He can always patronize these establishments when he wants to dress up. When he wants to patronize other businesses, there’s no law I am aware of that states he has to dress like a woman one hundred percent of the time. When he knows he is liable to be in a traditional establishment, he should dress appropriately.

No one deserves to be beaten like that, and I do have some sympathy for his circumstances, but its tempered. The women should be arrested and charged with assault, and they should serve some time and pay a fine. But I’m going to hold off on agreeing they should be, like one other person suggested, “flayed alive” until I know all the facts.

The bystanders are under no LEGAL obligation to intervene, while you’re correct about good Samaritans being punished for good deeds I doubt the risk of being sued even occurred to those employees.

It could be that the black perps do in fact consider themselves “Christian fundamentalists.” At least “Christians.” Also, most blacks, Christians or not, demur what queers and variants thereof do. It strikes them as mutilation of nature/process and destruction of family/sustainment. It revolts them.

“Christian fundamentalism” today so-called descends from several early heresies of the Christian rise around the Mediterranean. Among them, prominently, was Arianism, which included a monastic wing, especially in North Africa, noted specifically for wearing iron and spiked boots and stomping orthodox Christians and immoralists. Arians are puritanical, stiff and brutal. At one time a near majority of “Christian” bishops was Arian. The Council of Nicaea was called to anathematize Arian philosophy and behavior as not Christian. The Council succeeded, but like all things lousy, Arianism — along with its companion heresies — persists in fresh names and morphologies, always calling itself Christian/Christianity. Violence is among its hallmarks, its rallying points. It is not Christian, fundamentalist or otherwise.

This video recalls to my mind attacks on their enemies by North African Arians of the Fourth Century.

Many transgendered people have atypical chromosomes that are either at odds with their genital makeup or are configurations other than XX or XY.

And, as has been stated: HUGE difference between drag queens and cross-dressers or transgendered. For one thing, drag queens are usually gay, whereas the typical cross-dressing male is straight.

Most transgendered people are not considered for gender-reassignment surgery unless they’ve cross-lived full-time for a full year. That means ALL the time–and they generally have to be on hormones during that time as well.

Samaritan obligation or no, a video of numerous employees milling around and watching one of their customers being savagely beaten does enormous damage to McDonald’s. The idiot who took the video even made a particularly stupid statement siding with the attackers. One would hope he has already been fired. I wouldn’t be surprised if McDonald’s shutters the restaurant and fires the lot of them.

Fair or not, McDonald’s *will* probably lose millions in a lawsuit and in lost business.
