Our ‘First Gay President’ Now Losing Support From Black Christian Pastors

Posted on | May 14, 2012 | 51 Comments

Ouch, that’s going to leave a mark“:

A Texas pastor who once led the Southern Baptist Convention in introducing a resolution that recognized Obama’s historic achievement has voiced his displeasure with the president’s support and approval of gays, reports the Associated Baptist Press.
Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, wrote in a blog on May 9 that Obama’s statement is worthy of incurring wrath of biblical proportions. . . . “President Obama has betrayed the Bible and the Black Church with his endorsement of same-sex marriage. The Bible is crystal clear on this subject. . . . The moral impact of this day and decision is equal to the military impact of al-Queda when they attacked the Twin Towers on 911.”

(Hat-tips: News One and Fox Nation.) This is something I think most secularists don’t understand about us “bitter Bible-clingers.” We are People Of The Word, servants redeemed by unmerited grace who therefore owe as a sacred obligation the duty to defend the Word. It is not our own mere “belief” we defend, but the Word, which is eternal, a truth that will endure no matter what any liar may say against it. There are such things as Neutral Objective Facts, and we will not surrender the truth, for that would be a betrayal of the blood that was shed in order that we might know the truth.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness . . .
On Christ the solid rock I stand.
All other ground is sinking sand.

As it is written, “the truth shall make you free.” How then can anyone suppose that a people who, in answer to prayer, have been miraculously brought out of Egypt — for such was the understanding of their ancestors’ faith — should now turn their backs on He who redeemed them, to abandon the march toward Zion, and to surrender that salvation which so many suffered to gain?

Some people say it would take a miracle to beat Obama, so if “The First Gay President” soon becomes The First Black Ex-President . . .

Well, you can believe what you want to believe, I guess.

Exit Question: Why do liberals hate black Christians?

I fear that a lot of black pastors are going to jump the shark and give up on the Bible in favor of their own racist proclivities.  They evidently prefer the wrath of God over the wrath of Teh Won.

Maybe this will be the moment that the rank and file black Christian realizes that he’s been sold a bill of goods from the pul-pit.

I tend to think many black pastors will swallow their negative opinions about Obama signing on to gay marriage and vote for him anyway, but maybe there will enough to stay home go that Obama won’t be re-elected.

“My Hope Is Built” is one of my favorite hymns along with “Standing On The Promises”. Thanks for the clip, smitty.

I doubt many are surprised, and I doubt many will actually condemn him and tell his people to vote for Mittens or stay home.

The Black church is one of the most dysfunctional parts of the so-called Black community. Eben those cliaming to be fundamentalist refuse to deal with the social pathologies that overwhelm blacks, most of which are sinful to a true Christian.

I doubt this will have a major impact on black voters, but every little bit hurts particularly in a state such as NC where #OccupyResoluteDesk only won by 14,000 votes. I don’t believe NC was a swing state before Obamsky’s coming out, but other states which he carried by a larger margin are going to be effected by things like this. Every time #ORD panders to a specific group that supported him in 08 he risks alienating at least a sliver of one of the other groups that supported him. He can’t keep shaving off slivers of supporters.

Sorry, the Black Pastors are reaping what they sowed. Obama has been in office exactly as anyone with half a brain noticed he was prior to being elected.

As for the rant about ‘securalists’, given the Constitution is about what the Fed Gov can do, and denying it everything else, and that our foundation is based on individual rights, I prefer to keep our SECULAR government out of the business of enforcing some moral foundation written by barbarians 3000 yrs ago.But that is just me.

Don’t know about other states but in NC black pastors were preaching heavily in favor of amendment 1. Blacks voted in favor by a 2 to 1 margin.  Granted voting in favor of an amendment supporting existing law is not the same as voting for or against a candidate but this will surely create some doubts about teh one.

Don’t expect the moon. Be happy if the number of black voters for Obama goes down from 95% to the traditional 90% or so Democrats  usually achieve. Maybe we’ll get real lucky and one or two more percent will stay home and not bother to vote for anybody. But its a lost cause thinking the GOP might have a remote chance of winning the black vote.

Um, I don’t think Jesus Christ, or Moses, or the Apostle Paul were “barbarians”.  In fact, the intellect of even the smartest poster to TOM pales in comparison.

Also, keep in mind that our “secular” government was devised by Christians for the benefit of believers and non-believers alike. Christianity is all about individual responsibility.  There is no “group salvation” (as Obama has stated he believes).

The founders harmonized their own beliefs in a strong moral, religiously involved electorate, with the secular government concept found in the Consitution.  This was stated time and again by the likes of Madison and Adams.

History, learn it, live it, love it.

Actually the scenario you describe would be a big win for the republican. The 5% plus 1 or 2% you describe would be at least 1% of the national vote #OccupyResoluteDesk got in 08. One percent of the black vote in NC (23% of the total in 08) would be two thirds of Obamsky’s margin of victory in 08.

Correct, they wanted/needed a moral people because government could not, should not, attempt to create it via laws that could only corrupt those that demanded and enacted such.
My point is that if you seek to be a moral person, then live as a moral person. My morality is neither your, nor governments business as long as I do not interfere in your liberties.

Well stated libertarian position, which is why I am not Libertarian.  The morality of a nation is what makes it a civil society.  I suppose that one could claim that if you debase or erode the civil society then you are “interfering” with my liberties, but most Libertarians take a more straight-forward tack such as yours and try to diminish the value of morality in a society.

The current debate about “gay marriage” is  one such example.  Someone passing a law to allow gay marriage somewhere doesn’t seem to directly affect my liberty at all. However, once the entire country succumbs to the gay lobby in this regard, it is THEIR morality that triumphed. Their morality stipulates that the Judeo/Christian concept of marriage is outdated and [insert their preferred insult here].  They get their way and the civil society crumbles.

I like the civil society.  It allows me liberty, even if it also prevents gays from getting to call themselves husband and husband.  There are lots of examples of the need for legislating morality beyond just that legislation that prevents me from harming you.  It is subtle but it is there nonetheless.

I’m talking about actually cooking real people and eating them, not  a  ritual of spiritual communion.
One of them actually ends in real people being really killed and consumed by other real people.

The other is a ritual of spiritual communion (which perhaps has its origins in the attempt to convert the former to a religion which would not make them vulnerable to Kreutzfeld Jacob; actually it fits rather well with my opinions concerning the pork prohibition).

Moral relativism is a rather scant soup to use, no matter what.

  31. Tracy Coyle

Why is this so hard? No matter what GOOD reason you give for government to use force to make people behave it will always come down tyranny. Always.
I am a classical liberal conservative, individual rights come from our inherent existence – it is not of the state, by the state or for the state to determine what is appropriate.
Government has purpose, limited purpose.  Our society is not destroyed by gay marriage but by millions of people that treat marriage as a throw-away relationship. 95% of people don’t want to get married to a same sex partner. Those 95% will do more damage to ‘traditional’ marriage than the 5% that do. We as a society have ignored our responsibilities to each other, towards supervising our government, towards our beliefs and wonder why things are falling apart. DUH!  Of course you put society above the  individual – you are a classical conservative, a social conservative. Back in the day, classical conservatives were monarchists, they believed the State/King had authority over individuals. The only difference today is ‘who’ is king.

We’ll have to see. The Black vote was 2:1 in favor of amendment 1, but that will be  a far cry from actually refusing to support the won that thinks poorly of such votes. Blacks are nothing if not tribal, and the Wonwhowon is part of their melanin enhanced tribe as even Colin Powell has shown.

Ghey marriage is the ultimate throw away. You need to review the founder’s idea as the reason for government. They did not agree with you on coercion. They did have a strong Libertarian streak, but they realize that the sovereign bears the sword for good reason, as the Apostle Paul expressed it, and the founders agreed.

It is true that you can’t force people to be moral, but such people must also be excluded from civil society, or it will break down. We are doing that experiment as you read this, and the outcome is self evident to anyone that sees what is going on, and is historically aware.

If it comes down to African-Americans strongly held moral convictions versus government cheese…government cheese will win every time.

Still, if even 1% to 2% of blacks sit out the election over this issue, that alone will have nullified whatever Obama garnered from gay activists, to say nothing of the tens of millions of white Evangelical voters that will make damn sure to make their displeasure known at the ballot box.

You really could not have scripted it better for Romney.  The idiot holdouts that had real problems with Romney’s Mormonism (not mentioning any names) now understand they have much bigger things to worry about than how Romney was baptized.

I seriously doubt it would make a significant difference. In 2008 John McCain won somewhere around 500,000 black votes. My best case scenario would double that, but its likely to be in states Romney will win anyway, though it might help in states like Virginia and Indiana. The best it might help him in real close swing states would be if that one or two percent stay home. But that’s taking a lot on faith.

  44. Pathfinder's wife
    May 15th, 2012 @ 9:18 am

This begs a response: why do governments use force to make people behave.

Well, there is always a fine line  that has to be closely watched and guarded lest the authoritative body steps over it, but to a certain extent the reason why we have laws (either religious or secular) is for the precise reason that people will oftentimes not behave without some sort of coercion.  It’s a sad fact of life; not everyone is good intentioned, and if given the opportunity will prey upon others especially if they gather about them a group of like minded people.  And while they may start out not infringing on your personal liberties, eventually they may (and by then you’re usually sol).

As for the gay marriage thing — I am lukewarm to the arguments, but I will state: the problem lies in the implications — it is very much likely that the real issue isn’t whether or not gays can marry, but rather the power a secular government can then wield over religious institutions, forcing them to do something against their religious precepts (their liberties then infringed upon); it also paves the way for the secular government to seize more power over the question who can or cannot marry and the conditions of the same, as they would have now gotten power over the very definition of the term itself.
It wouldn’t be a long distance from there to determining who gets to reproduce and under what conditions. That is my issue with this issue.

So, the best thing to do — since tyranny seems to be the thing that will happen no matter what, is to just leave the situation alone — keep government out of marriage as much as possible; gays should probably just be happy with getting civil unions and be glad they dodged a potentially lethal bullet (although now it may be too late for that).

By itself losing 1% of the black vote wouldn’t make that much difference though losing another 5000 votes on top of that in NC would give McCain NC in 08. My point is that #OccupyResoluteDesk is losing small segments of every demographic that put him over the top last election.
