Crony Journalism at Think Progress?

Posted on | June 22, 2013 | 28 Comments

Aleister at American Glob publishes “An Illustrated Guide To The Dishonesty Of Think Progress” with a link to an intriguing article at The Nation (of all places) which describes “a secret group of corporate donors” that would appear to function as a nexus between (a) businesses reliant on funding from the federal government’s “green energy” programs, and (b) the Center for the American Progress, which does not disclose the conflicts of interest behind its advocacy on behalf of “green energy.”

I used to know a guy who focused on the Center for American Progress as a key element of what he called “the institutional Left.”

Damn, I miss that guy.

If there’s crony journalism at Think Progress, it’s only because someone looked the word up for them. Up ’til now, they probably thought it was the joint between a crow’s feet and its hips!

What I don’t understand is what First Solar doesn’t do what every other rich progressive does; filter their donations through Tides Foundation. They could make a large donation to Tides and earmark the donation for Center for American Progress rather than donate directly. Tides would bundle their donation up with those of others and make a large lump sum donation or maybe break it out and make smaller donations over time, whatever is required to disguise the true source of the donation.

That is exactly what Tides Foundation was established for. The entire purpose of it was to facilitate donations to “progressive” causes by people who might not want their name appearing directly in the documents for those causes. So CAP would show a donation from Tides Foundation and Tides would show a donation from First Solar but the two amounts would be different and there is no requirement for Tides to show how the donation from First Solar was distributed.

In fact, and I have not checked to see, I would also be willing to bet CAP is a client of Fenton Communications or there is some movement of personnel over time between the two organizations. Tides is the funding mechanism for the “progressive left” and Fenton is the PR machine that is basically like the conductor in the orchestration of the public faces of the various groups.

The Nation article describes CAP as just another super-charged lobbying group. That CAP, the media, and business have an incestuous relationship is not near so surprising as young people’s belief that CAP is the center of moral authority for the prognazis.
