On ‘Feminist Men’ and Unicorns

Posted on | September 28, 2014 | 40 Comments

Chelsea Bock (@ChelseaCristene) is a young feminist writer and community college English instructor who came to my attention because of a blog post she wrote about E.J. Levy, but that’s another story for another day, or maybe later today. Anyway, curiosity led me to check Bock’s Twitter feed, where she was RT’ing stuff from the Good Men Project and #HeForShe and Autostraddle (!), and I was like, “Oh, I know this type. Trying to save males from their own sexism.”

In essence: You guys don’t know how to be men. Let me tell you how.

Sweetheart, you’re a unicorn hunter.

You’re chasing something that your theory tells you must exist somewhere — the Feminist Man — even though every previous claim to have found one turned out to be like the Piltdown Hoax. Bill Clinton was supposed to be the Feminist Man; it turned out his commitment to equality could be summarized in two words: “Blow me.” More recently, the unicorn hunters claimed that Professor Hugo Schwyzer was the Feminist Man, until it was revealed that he was in fact a dangerous psychotic with a habit of banging his community college students. Perhaps you see the pattern here.

If you’re a womanizing sociopathic narcissist on the hunt for some easy action, being a Feminist Man is definitely your gig.

One gets the idea, generally, that these unicorn hunters are perfectionists doomed forever to be disappointed with actual men, none of whom is ever going to fit the unrealistic requirements of being the Feminist Man. Do they want Ashley Wilkes or do they want Rhett Butler? Or is the problem that the Rhett Butler types are rare and usually not interested in the type of woman who says she wants a Feminist Man? When you get to the bottom line, really, you recognize that this is a personal problem for a certain group of disgruntled women, and not a problem that easily lends itself to one of those personal-to-political issue platforms.

Adulthood involves accepting that the world is what it is, and not wishing you could live in an imagined utopia. Make a choice: Do you want to grow up, or do you want to be a ToysRUs kid?

It seems that Chelsea Bock doesn’t like making choices. It’s possible to read between the lines of her writing and social media output. Did I mention that she RT’d an Autostraddle article? Yes, but what I didn’t say was that the article was about Bisexuality Awareness Week. And the subhead on her article about E.J. Levy? “There is no right or wrong way to be queer.” Also there’s this on her blog, Gender on the Rocks:

I do speak from a different point of view because I believe that we are all innately bisexual — just by varying degrees. And after this, I will definitely be writing more on queer theory in the future.

So you can be excused for thinking that maybe — just maybe — Chelsea is keeping her options open. Or maybe that she doesn’t have any really exciting options on her personal horizon. (We can imagine her Craigslist ad: Female, 26, seeks human of any gender willing to make exclusive romantic commitment to someone who is profoundly ambivalent about her erotic preferences.)

Sometimes if you can’t choose between men and women, what you’re really choosing is . . . cats. Lots of cats.

Feminists are not at war with men. They’re at war with human nature. Their demand for “gender equality” is like Hitler’s demand for the Sudetenland, where a compromise — “Peace for our time!” — is merely an invitation to further aggression. If there is such a thing as a Feminist Man, he probably looks a lot like Neville Chamberlain.

The American Spectator Folds Like A Cheap Tent, And Other Signs Of The End Times

Posted on | September 27, 2014 | 20 Comments

— compiled by Wombat-socho

One of the more disagreeable things I saw on Facebook this week (and, having a number of acquaintances who report crap from ThinkProgress and similar founts of stupidity, that’s saying something) was this post by Ken White at Popehat pointing out that the American Spectator had surrendered, horse and foot, to the Dread Pro Se Litigant And Alleged Pedophile Brett Kimberlin. My reaction, like Ken’s, boiled down to “WTF? You had the balls to play gadfly against the Clinton Administration, but caved to a petty jerk like this?” Well, that’s one less stream of alerts and fundraising e-mails to clutter my in-box. Semi-related: editors at Wikipedia are trying to flush The Federalist down the memory hole on account of their butthurt over Sean Davis’ exposure of their hero Neil DeGrasse Tyson as this decade’s Dan Rather.

On Wednesday, Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno announced that a division headquarters would be heading for Iraq to coordinate the efforts of the advisors, intel weenies, increased Embassy security forces and other ground troops sent to assist in the fight against the Islamic State. I could have sworn we were told there would be no boots on the ground. In related news, the family of the first female fighter pilot in the UAE disowned her Thursday after she took part in air strikes against IS forces in Syria. Oh, and that Khorasan group Obama was bragging about bombing earlier in the week? Didn’t actually exist. On the ground, Syrian Kurds in Kobane want weapons, not “humanitarian aid.”

Here at home, former Congressman Jim Traficant died of injuries from a tractor accident. You can tell he was a conservative Democrat by the kind of obituaries he’s getting from the Drive-By Media. In riot-torn Ferguson, the Justice Department has ordered police to take off bracelets indicating support for accused fellow officer Darren Wilson. The NYT is visibly hoping third-party candidates derail the GOP’s drive to retake the Senate this fall. In the recent outbreak of workplace violence in Oklahoma, it seems the suspect was canned for arguing in favor of stoning women, and that he was connected to both terrorist imam Anwar al-Awlaki and the Boston bomber’s mosque. But rest easy, there’s no connection to Islam here, right?

Speaking of boots on the ground, T.R. Fehrenbach’s This Kind of War‘s Kindle edition is on sale for $1.99. The early chapters dealing with America’s rapid demobilization after World War 2 and unreadiness for the Korean War seem especially pertinent these days, as Fate seems intent on dragging President Obama and the rest of us back to Iraq, kicking and screaming.

MUSLIM CONVERT BEHEADS WOMAN IN OKLAHOMA TERROR ATROCITY

The Islamic jihad in America continues:

MOORE, Okla. – Officials with the Moore Police Department say the FBI is now involved in the investigation related to a brutal attack of workers at a food distribution plant.
Sgt. Jeremy Lewis says the alleged suspect, 30-year-old Alton Nolen had just been fired when he drove to the front of the business, hit a vehicle and walked inside.
He walked into the front office area where he met 54-year-old Colleen Hufford and began attacking her with a knife. . . .
Lewis confirms that Hufford was stabbed several times and that Nolen “severed her head.”
At that point, Lewis claims Nolen met 43-year-old Traci Johnson and began attacking her with the same knife.
Officials say at that point, Mark Vaughan, an Oklahoma County reserve deputy and a former CEO of the business, shot him as he was actively stabbing Johnson. . . .
The FBI is now looking into Nolen’s background after his former co-workers said he tried to convert them to Islam after recently converting himself.
Lewis says the FBI is working in conjunction with the Moore Police Department, especially when it comes to the religious aspect of the case.
At this time, it is not known if the suspect’s beliefs played a role in the attack.

You think so, maybe? Donald Douglas has more at American Power.

Readers are familiar with the Brett Kimberlin situation. I have said little about the case since announcing our victory over the notorious bomber in the Maryland case Kimberlin v. Walker, et al.

John Hoge and Aaron Walker have continued updating on proceedings in the federal suit, Kimberlin v. National Bloggers Club, et al.

What I’d like to ask is that readers consider making a special donation — $10, $25, whatever — to BomberSuesBloggers.com.

We have in mind a project, which would involve travel expenses, the details of which I am not at liberty to discuss publicly, for reasons that should be obvious. But if the folks who have previously been so generous in their support would be so kind as to kick in a few more dollars, that might help speed us on our way, so to speak.

Arrest in Hannah Graham Case

Posted on | September 25, 2014 | 42 Comments

The disappearance of University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham has not been solved — she has not been found and it is not known whether she is dead or alive — but a suspect in her Sept. 13 disappearance, who fled to Texas, is now in police custody:

The man suspected of kidnapping a University of Virginia student reported missing on Sept. 13 was taken into police custody Wednesday night.
Jesse Matthew was arrested in Galveston, Texas, Wednesday on charges of abducting 18-year-old Hannah Graham, NBC Washington reports.
Police obtained a felony arrest warrant for Matthew, a 32-year-old patient technician at the University of Virginia, earlier this week.
Officials believe Matthew was the last person seen with the teen before she vanished. Graham went to dinner with friends the night of Sept. 12 before attending two parties held at off-campus student housing units.
She left the second party alone, and surveillance videos appear to show her walking with Matthew, his arm wrapped her waist, walking at Charlottesville’s downtown mall at around 1 a.m. Sept. 13.
Police say Matthew bought Graham alcohol at a restaurant and they left the establishment together.
Graham has not been seen since.

There are many troubling aspects to this story, and things that don’t seem to make sense. These “parties held at off-campus student housing units” — was alcohol served at these parties? Was Hannah Graham drunk when she “left the second party alone” after midnight? Do police in Charlottesville plan to prosecute those who illegally provide alcohol to 18-year-olds? Because it seems to me that there is a rather lackadaisical attitude toward the enforcement of laws against underage drinking in Charlottesville, and that this may have been a contributing factor in Hannah Graham’s disappearance.

You see this scenario all the time in “date rape” cases on college campuses: Teenage girl and teenage boy get drunk; sex happens; girl subsequently says the sex wasn’t consensual; feminists then begin shouting about the heteronormative patriarchy. Yet common sense suggests the obvious question, how are these teenagers getting drunk at college, if the legal drinking age is 21?

My supposition is that underage drinking is so common for college kids that school officials and police in college towns take it for granted, so girls keep getting raped and feminists keep shouting about patriarchy, when booze is really the basic problem.

Hannah’s parents, John and Sue Graham, moved from England to Washington, D.C., when Hannah was 5. At a press conference earlier this week in Charlottesville, Hannah’s father said:

“As this nightmare for Hannah, for us, for Hannah’s big brother James, her grandparents and extended family continues we would like to make this statement.
“Hannah is our little girl, our only daughter, James’s little sister. She is also the oldest granddaughter of her grandparents. She is enormously precious to us.
“Now somebody knows what happened to Hannah. We don’t know who that is. Others who may be watching, they may know something about what happened to Hannah.
“Did anybody see Hannah? Did you see Hannah? Who saw Hannah? Somebody did. Please if you have anything no matter how insignificant you think it may be please call the tip line.
“Anything that just might help us to bring Hannah home.”

Every parent’s worst nightmare, and I’ve got the feeling that feminists shouting about patriarchy won’t solve the problem.
