Q: ‘How Many Right-Wing Extremists Currently Reside at This Address?’

Really, these Census questions have become so intrusive . . .

The lady from the Census Bureau stopped by yesterday, thanks to my personal effort to stimulate employment: Don’t fill out the mail-in form, so they have to send an enumerator to the house.

Your tax dollars at work — temporarily, at least.

Despite the concerns of Andrew Sullivan and Rick Ungar about Michelle Bachmann and Glenn Beck inspiring anti-Census violence, the enumerator was held hostage only long enough to pose for a picture.

The Census taker showed up at my house last week. A very nice elderly gentleman who took his job very seriously. Unfortunately for him, he caught me a couple beers in and I giggled through the whole thing. I started when he asked if I was “male or female” and just couldn’t get it back under control. At the end he thanked me and shook my hand saying, “well, that was different.” I think he meant it as a compliment.

That photo has replaced Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” in my mind. Instead of a pitch fork, it’s a census form…
