Obama Presser: ‘Twas Ever Thus

Jonah Golberg:

During his press conference [03 November], President Obama insisted that the American public doesn’t want to “re-litigate the past.” Roughly four minutes later, he insisted that he inherited the deficit, which got worse because of a recession he inherited, as well. Somehow Obama forgot to mention that he increased spending 23 percent, tripling the deficit in the process.

And, a little later:

. . .the point he wants people to take away is that all of the runaway spending on his watch—much of which was focused on “reforms” that, by design, will do nothing to deal with the recession for years, if ever—was all done for an emergency that he inherited.

The whole sad state of affairs recalls an earlier autocrat:

But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.–Exodus 8:15

Note: the Obama/Pharoah comparison is due to my own Congressman, Jim Moran, who explicitly said that Obama is Pharoah at his ObamaCare townhall last year. You won’t find that at the start of his remarks on the official audio, though; it’s been expertly edited. You’ll just have to trust me and my lying ears.
