Egyptians Say Good-Bye to ‘Arab Spring,’ Say Hello to New Military Dictatorship

Posted on | July 3, 2013 | 43 Comments

It tells us a lot about the Obama administration’s foreign policy “success” that, after his encouragement of pro-democracy movements in the Arab world, the Egyptians actually rioted to demand that the military take over and relieve them of the “democratic” government they had elected. Ben Shapiro reports at Breitbart.com:

On Wednesday, Gen. Abdel Fatah Said Al-Sisi announced a military coup in Egypt. He said that the Constitution had been suspended, that early elections would take place, and that there would be a “code of ethics” for the media.

There is a big stack of aggregation at Memeorandum. It’s really sad to say that “democracy” in Egypt was a very bad idea to begin with, and to hope that the general’s talk of elections is a lie. To view democracy as a principle — as a litmus test of governmental legitimacy without regard for what any elected regime may do — is the kind of nonsense that political science professors may claim to believe, but this ignores the horrors that have been inflicted upon innocents by democratic governments. For example, Detroit . . .

UPDATE: Speaking of failed democracies:

    *Sigh*

All too horribly true. It’s just that I keep rooting for people to do the right thing for themselves, while gloomily expecting they won’t.

Just once, I’d like to be wrong in my cynicism. Is that too much to ask?

Dianna, it started with Aaron Burr. By the time we got to the Jackson presidency, the fanaticism for “democracy” was probably so far gone as to be terminal. And then we gave women the vote …

    Doomed. Hopelessly doomed.

What is interesting in the statements was the use of the word “technocrat” as a good thing. It seems that most of the outgoing government had spent most of their waking hours, prior to joining the Morsi government, praying and reading the Quran all day, and had no executive experience.

“No executive experience” .. hmm .. I’ve seen this somewhere else before today .. but where ?

I’m not sure why the Christians would be fleeing when they were one of the most outspoken groups asking to have Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood thugs deposed by the military. They were out on the streets with all of the protesters. Hell, they had the biggest incentive of all to get rid of Morsi. They were being killed by him and the MB. So I don’t know what Kirsten is on about.

That twat of an ambassador that we have over there, Patterson (who is utterly despised by the Egyptians, btw), actually requested that the Coptic Pope tell the Christians to stay out of the protests. Seriously. Our Ambassador asked that the people who were being slaughtered en masse just…shut up about it.

This is what our government is doing over there. Makes you wonder what the hell we were doing in Benghazi. Makes you wonder what the hell we’ve been doing everywhere else.

I just went back through her stream. I had re-read that tweet. Totally misunderstood that. The exodus of the Christians was BECAUSE of Morsi.

This fetish for Liberal Democracy is Leftist in origin and one hopes that, in the coming decades, it will be thrown on the dung-heap of history where it belongs.

There are certain conditions required for democracy (in any of its forms) to work. The right to private property and to contract, and to enforce one’s own rights in court are a few. An independent judiciary is another. The rule of law instead of men is paramount (and under Obama even the US is seeing how precariously that bedrock principle can be perched).

Without all these things, democracy inevitably degenerates into mob rule, despotism, or some combination of the two.

http://yidwithlid.blogspot.com/2013/07/five-things-media-wont-tell-you-about.html Lid is spot on. Egypt’s military is not really an army, than it is a big crony capitalism baksheesh network of civilian and government entities. They have their fingers into everything and the Muslim Brotherhood have managed to destroy the economy in Egypt.
