Meltdown Monday: Does Bill Schmalfeldt Need a Brief Vacation at Spring Grove?

“The point is, the sound advice I gave Barrett Brown could apply equally to you, Mr. Schmalfeldt: ‘Spare me your lawsuit threats … you are traveling a road to destruction.’ …
“As for your own understanding (of law or anything else), sir, I am quite certain it is impaired by the fact that YOU’RE CRAZY.
“Crackers. Psycho. Loopy. Off your rocker.
“Nuttier than a Snickers bar.”

— Robert Stacy McCain, July 26

“Spring Grove Hospital Center is the oldest hospital for the mentally ill in Maryland, and the third oldest in the United States. … It was renamed the Maryland Hospital for the Insane in 1838, and moved to its present site at Catonsville in 1872. …
“With 295 inpatient beds and 62 assisted-living beds, the Center provides acute, subacute and long-term psychiatric care to adult and geriatric patients …”

— Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

It would be wrong to say that Bill Schmalfeldt “went crazy” today, because clearly he arrived at that destination long ago. Having been ordered by Carroll County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Stansfield June 14 to cease all contact with John Hoge, Schmalfeldt’s insane obsession makes it impossible for him to comply. So when for the third time Schmalfeldt “accidentally” addressed Hoge in a Twitter message (the difference between speaking about someone and speaking to someone on Twitter) what does Schmalfeldt do? He sends a crazy e-mail to the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s office:

“People contacting me now are surreptitiously adding @wjjhoge to their tweets hoping to catch me in this mistake, and they have succeeded again. . . .
“Hoge’s friends have been trying to trap me this way. . . .
“I know that I have blundered into the trap that was set for me . . .”

Exactly whom does Schmalfeldt mean to accuse of “trying to trap me”?

What is actually happening — you should read this post by Hoge — is that Bill Schmalfeldt is engaged in cyberstalking: Obsessively watching Hoge and Hoge’s friends to see what they’re talking about, and them jumping into their timelines to shout his crazy accusatory gibberish at them.

If anyone wants me to provide a court affidavit to explain how Schmalfeldt’s particular form of harassment works (in terms of tactics, strategy and purpose), I’ll be glad to do so, but I’m not going to describe it here, because I don’t endorse it, and I don’t want to accidentally offer a “How To Be a Troll” guide for copycats.

Schmalfeldt’s problem is that he has become so obsessive and/or compulsive about his cyberstalking that he lacks the rationality necessary to avoid violating the court order.

Bill can’t help himself. So when he starts ranting about “POOP FLAKES” and scrotums (trust me, you don’t want to see those Tweets), this is not merely evidence, it’s symptomatic. His Twitter timeline got so crazy, even his left-wing buddies were telling Schmalfeldt he was losing his mind and finally Hoge felt it necessary to ask police to do a welfare check to make sure Schmalfeldt had not become a danger to himself or others.

Having expended 5,000 words to explain to Bill Schmalfeldt that he’s crazy, I don’t know what more can be done. When the nice young men in white coats show up to cart him away for a psychiatric evaluation, we can expect that Schmalfeldt will blame other people for his problems.

Because that’s what crazy people always do.

UPDATE: This was predictable:

Switching your Twitter account to “protected” status is, in this kind of situation, very much like waving a white flag. Bill Schmalfeldt was the aggressor, and it’s impossible to accomplish much in terms of Twitter aggression once you switch to “protected” status.

  1. I would hope he wouldn’t ruin that account with his usual filth. But he has done it to all of his other accounts. How does he expect to get listeners for an internet music show if he keeps tweeting tweeting about gay sex and poop? The new radio account seemed to be free from that so far.

  2. This is my first time commenting in the blog and my first time commenting on a blog in YEARS. But I just have to say: “DEAR GOD ALMIGHTY.”

  3. I’ve seen a lot of vile things by the way of Internet trolls over these past 10 years. Never before have I had to say “Dear God” so much in one afternoon.

Bill Schmalfeldt’s obsession with child-like reproductive parts is alarming and downright disgusting. The man has left all reason and now argues with himself with contentions that if applied to ANY of his actions, he would discover are in fact a case against his vile actions.

Today he used sexist, bigoted, homophobic and racist epithets to attack me. No wonder he’s losing fringe followers and Liberal bloggers continue to distance themselves from his actions.

The man is a thug and a criminal and we’re not taking it anymore.

May God save his soul… because his mind left ages ago and well, he never had a body. No neck.

  4. What’s that even mean?

As a former dog breeder, and an long-time anus user, I know a thing or two about poop. And I can assure you, while it can take many forms, “flakes” is not one of them.

  5. You are falling into a logic trap by assuming he is using proper & correct English. I recommend just reading it at a basic 9th grade level without the rule book.

In this case “trying to trap me” is who ever he wishes it to be while ranting.

  6. It’s about time you showed up. This is where all the “pretty” hang. I come here for the beer and ambiance. Plus McCain lets me curse at him on occasion. He’s quite the “libertine” in that respect.

You should know to keep your shoes on in here. They only clean the floors about once a month. And they never clean under the tables. I’m not sure when the last health inspection took place, but McCain has “connections” IYKWIMAITYD.

An occasional fight will break out and sometimes McCain himself will start it. Those are awesome. However, the BEST ones are when McCain takes on everyone in the joint.

So Ali, pull up a chair. The first round is on me.

  7. Way back when, when he was naught but a teenage lad, he never once got to take a girl ‘necking’. For obvious reasons.

  8. I don’t think that’s it. I think he taken to stalking Hoge’s commenters and followers now. That may be how he ended up on that feed.

Trust me on this one. I know. He’s been looking into the people that Hoge and McCain are communicating with.

  9. Would be interesting to see the police report of the welfare check. If BS were a veteran his guns would be confiscated, and 5 days in the psych ward for observation. Don’t think he served though.

  10. The real problem for Schmalzie is that he’s apparently not a party to some of the many conversations going on in his own head. This guy is waaayyy out there.

  11. You are trying way to hard to beat King Hippo. You just have to wait till he opens his mouth, punch him once in the mouth and he’ll then reveal his weak point on his belly button. Punch that spot till defeated. Then you can go fight Great Tiger.

  12. You’re right, above the shoulders he’s all head. Brings new meaning to head and shoulders above the rest.

  13. They’re coming to take me away, ha ha
They’re coming to take me away, ho ho hee hee ha ha
    To the Funny Farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And basket weavers will sit and smile and twiddle their clean white toes
And they’re coming to take me away ha haaaaa….

  14. I have super-duper double-top-secret thing I do to keep from addressing a tweet to someone: I delete their handle from the body of my reply tweet. I can do this because I have wingnut privilege. Obviously it wouldn’t work for Pimplehead.

  15. On the one hand, Bill Schmalfeldt isn’t a very sympathetic character.

On the other hand, anyone who would seek, and any judge who would grant, a legal order forbidding the use of some particular @[handle] in tweets, is even less sympathetic than Schmalfeldt. The former should be shunned and the latter removed from the bench.

  16. Tom, you have to know what went on here: Schmalfeldt had been harassing Lee Stranahan in a particularly heinous manner. Stranahan decided to file charges in Maryland, flew to Baltimore to do so, and Hoge gave Stranahan a ride from the airport to the courthouse and back. It was this assistance to Stranahan that made Hoge the particular object of Schmalfeldt’s wrath.

The minute you understand that, of course, your next question is: Why was Schmalfeldt harassing Stranahan? This is a good question, and one that I suspect Schmalfeldt would have a difficult time answering, because it goes directly to the matter of “Team Kimberlin” and their motives for targeting a number of individuals (including Patterico) who had played roles in the 2011 exposure of WeinerGate. Aaron Walker was a former co-blogger of Patterico’s.

Neal Rauhauser himself has explained how, in mid-2011, he realized that there was an overlap between Kimberlin’s own enemies (including Patterico and the Breitbart organization) and Anthony Weiner’s enemies.

I’ve previously explained all of this, in one way or another, but it’s sufficiently complex that it’s difficult to boil down to a few hundred words, and the Kimberlin-Rauhauser Axis continually muddies the waters through “Accuse the Accusers” tactics, so that many people are confused about what happened and why.
