Shocking Claim: #FreeKate’s Mother Is ‘Cool Mom,’ in the Very Worst Way

The following anonymous comment, on a CBS story about the Kaitlyn Hunt case, was left by someone claiming to be an acquaintance:

Sadly I blame her mother, Kelley. Someone I know personally.
Many years ago I knew something like this would happen with one of her daughters. Not to this extent, but something major.
She has always allowed her daughters to do as they please. I know for a fact that the 2nd oldest dated a 20 year old when she was only 14! The mother would allow these things. The girls [were allowed] to have boys over for parties, that would turn into a sleepover, where there would be drug and alcohol use. This was a few years ago, but the kids at that time ranged from 13-15.
They are just like their mother! Unfortunately, it is how they are being raised! This girl is now paying for the way she was raised, all because the mother did not teach right from wrong.
People can say all they want, think what they want. All of this boils down to not being raised properly. Never being told no, sex talk in front of these girls from the mother about her boyfriends. The mom has no filter!
Mom was more worried about getting out with friends and getting laid while these kids would sit home and babysit the younger ones just a few years ago.
Seriously sickens me! Who wants to hear about sex talk from your mom about her sex life. I remember MySpace days, Kelley was having her daughters take pictures of her in lingerie and Kelley would post them to MySpace!
I support Kate! I do not support her mother!

Normally, I wouldn’t quote something like this and, of course, I cannot verify any of the commenter’s specific allegations, all of which may be completely false for all I know, but . . .

But it is self-evident that nobody ever taught Kaitlyn Hunt “right from wrong,” or else she wouldn’t be in the Indian River County Jail.

Furthermore, from the first time I started writing about this story, feminist blogger (and sexual abuse survivor) S.J. Reidhead has been concerned that Kaitlyn Hunt’s behavior was that of someone who had been sexualized at an early age.

Kaitlyn was “acting out,” as the therapists say. Would this commenter’s tale tend to explain some of that “creepy” vibe that’s been emanating from the Hunt family since Day One of this story?

Again, I repeat, I have no way to know if any specific accusation in this anonymous commenter’s tale are true, but the general portrayal of Kelley Hunt Smith’s behavior as the “Cool Mom” when she was divorced, four or five years ago, would certainly be consistent with the anti-social hoodlum behavior of her daughters: “Beat her f–king ass, Emily! Beat her ass! Get that bitch!”

Where do you think girls like that come from, anyway? Violent, foul-mouthed, tattooed — who raises their daughters to be that way?

“She is known as a whore throughout the school . . .
my whole school knows she’s not a good person.”

That’s what one of her Sebastian River High School classmates said about Kaitlyn Hunt in May, complaining about the media portrayal of her as an “innocent” young girl. And then there was this message that Kaitlyn’s younger sister posted on Twitter:

Kelley to her daughter about how she “whooped her ass,” and Emily reacts: “Lmfao my moms f–king badass!!” As I said when I posted that screenshot in May: “Hunt family values, as it were.”

So, is this the kind of mother who would do the kinds of things the anonymous commenter alleges? And is the behavior of Kelley Hunt Smith’s daughters about what we might expect from someone raised that way? Reader may draw their own conclusions.

Kelley Hunt Smith named the parents of Kaitlyn’s victim nine times in her May 17 Facebook post, accusing them of “trying to ruin my daughters life . . .  trying to send an innocent young girl to prison because they are full of hate and bigotry.”

No, Kelley, they didn’t “ruin” Kaitlyn’s life — you did.

And you should be ashamed of yourself for what you have done.

  5. Momma going out on dates, talking in front of her daughters about her sex life, having them take lingerie photos of her to put on MySpace?

    Yeah, I’d say that could explain a lot.

    If it’s true, that is.

  6. @robertstacymccain:disqus: You may have saw me ask this on Twitter, but is it known where the device Kate used to sent the texts, pics, and video to the vic is? It could easily have much more damning material on it — e.g. child porn of the vic. I know at least one of them took at least one pic of them (likely with the iPod Touch) when they were together in Kate’s car. There could easily be more photographic and video evidence on Kate’s device. Can’t find any info on Kate’s personal effects when she was booked, though.

  8. That’s an odd article – it is dated today, but I suspect that it’s older and was updated with the Julia Graves statement.

  9. I don’t know. I doubt the prosecutors have done a search warrant to obtain Kate’s computers, etc.

    In the current situation, really, the prosecutors don’t want to be doing overkill. I’m sure that’s the only reason there hasn’t been a DFACS investigation of the Hunt family, given not only Kate’s behavior but also the behavior of her younger sister. (I haven’t posted everything I’ve got on that, because I don’t want to do overkill, either.)

    All the prosecution ever wanted in this case was for Kaitlyn to accept a plea bargain. That’s how nearly all such cases end, and if it hadn’t been for Drama Queen Kelley and Psycho Dad Steve trying to turn this case into a national gay-rights issue, we never would have heard of Kaitlyn.

    Somebody really should have explained the “Streisand Effect” to these people. And now look what a mess they’ve made of everything.

    It’s sad — just pathetically said.

  10. True, but I think this has now gone beyond the plea deal stage. Kate sent the victim porn of herself. I really, REALLY have to wonder if Kate took pornographic pics and/or video of the victim on her own device. If that device is gone (destroyed) and Kate never sent any such pics/vids from the device to somewhere else, I guess we will never know.

    Or am I just completely daft on this point?

  12. I think that the concept of “jail bait” must be something that teenagers still talk about. Yes, of course… sex goes on sometimes even where parents do what parents are supposed to do… and the teenagers who like to think they’re so grown up are also not known for having self-restraint or following the law.

    But when they get caught? Even if you really didn’t understand that what you did was wrong, I would think that most kids would realize that they were in deep trouble… and THAT is probably 100% the problem of parents. Parents are supposed to understand that there are consequences, even supposing someone thought the law was wrong, an adult understands that you can’t just pretend it doesn’t exist.

    I mean… did KATE decide on her own not to take the initial plea offers? I doubt that a lawyer would have advised to risk a trial.

    Plus, until this week, the major coverage has been uniformly informed by FreeKate.

    Grabbing all the electronic devices? Hundreds of hours of examination, who knows what else would get turned up…

    I understand why they don’t *want* to fool with it.

    I suspect the Hunts will manage to kick the police into actually looking into far more before it’s all said and done.

  14. Here’s the thing: Kate evidently had gotten the idea that whatever she wanted to do sexually was OK. So when she encountered the younger girl’s parents telling her this was not OK, Kate had no experiential frame of reference within which to process that feedback. And if you read her mother’s May 17 Facebook post, you see that Kelley had no frame of reference, either: All that whining about having her daughter torn from her arms by the police, etc. It was like, “You mean, there are laws that we have to take seriously?

    Everything that has happened since reflects that amoral, anti-social, entitlement-mentality view of sexual behavior. In the minds of such people, the very concept of “wrong + sex” is astonishing. Can there be any kind of sex that is wrong? The thought seems never to have crossed their minds. But then again, there are a lot of thoughts that have never crossed their minds.

  16. Yes, that’s what this seems like to me.

    But lots of people who think that “the law doesn’t apply to me” nevertheless understand that when they get caught, that it does. You get the “sorry they got caught” routine where they may not suddenly get morals, but realize that they’re subject (even unfairly) to the opinion of others.

    And sure, sometimes people don’t listen to lawyers but I just really really can’t imagine any lawyer saying, yeah, refuse the plea, they’ve got nothing on you.

    The advocates and Free Kate defenders *and* her Mom seem do seem to be astonished. Astonished is an excellent word.

    This is so well noted. And it is compounded by the lies framing LGBT individuals as some kind of “minority,” as in an oppressed group of people, second-class, and all the shamelessly usurped black civil rights language. In truth, LGBT people are much perpetrators of harm than victims of anything. And this entitlement mentality regarding harmful sexual behavior is exactly what mental health organizations have been fomenting with their false claims that homosexuality is normal and just another variation of human sexuality. It inevitably leads millions of people to think their homosexual desires are OK. Why should the fact that they do harm to others enter their minds? Their sexual gratification and its pursuit has been given the moral seal of approval by their fake authorities. Nothing should stand in their way. And if they can do harm and get away with it, they do. In the rare cases when they get caught, it is only logical to play the (fake, but ever so popular in liberal circles) homosexual victim card.

    As a detail, I don’t see anyone referring to Kate as bisexual in the media. However, it’s what her mother had said she was – or is anyone claiming Kate changed from heterosexual to homosexual? I remember reading that her mother had said Kate had only dated boys before this scandal.

  18. I’m mildly surprised no one’s hunted down those MySpace pictures yet. Then again, maybe that says more about MySpace than anything else.

  20. Letting minors drink and have sleepovers is doable if you have a strong, open, ongoing dialog with them, and make sure their heads are screwed on right. Many countries have no drinking age restriction for minors.

    But you should never mistake “being cool” or “being your kid’s friend” for parenting. THAT’S where most “cool” Moms and Dads fail. I knew plenty of “cool” parents who were also strict about the right things. You have to have limits and someone has to be in charge. If it’s not you, it will be the kid.

    The Hunts should never have rung that “#FreeKate” bell, because this kind of fame has no upside. The original deal they could have brokered would likely have been far less of a burden to bear..

  22. This story would be even more poignant if it stood out more. Unfortunately it barely rates much more than a shake of the head, maybe a shiver as you walk past.

    But the world is full of kids who just don’t get the internet.

    Parents have to teach ’em. It’s not enough to remove their electronic devices; the world is swimming in video cameras.

    I made the mistake once of commenting somewhere that if young, single women would simply refrain from having sex during the few days of each month where pregnancy can occur, then maybe we wouldn’t be killing so many babies through abortions. I went to Catholic school and they teach Natural Family Planning but the immediate response to my comment was that it was an absurd idea to actually exhibit some self-control when it comes to sex…..we can thank the feminists for that one!!

  25. I suspect we’re also dealing with a substance abuse problem, but that’s just my humble opinion. Kelley Hunt Smith has no boundaries in her life, from what I can tell. Rules don’t apply to her, societal rules. She’s truly harming her daughters. One wonders where child services is.

  28. What we see in this family is the inevitable result of the dehumanization of Man. That is, thanks to Darwin and his philosophical progeny, we no longer think of ourselves as moral agents whose humanity requires the exercise of self-control. Rather, we are merely animals for which all instincts are natural and acting upon those instincts without regard to consequences is perfectly acceptable–indeed “normal.” That is why people cannot understand that there is a “right” and “wrong” when it comes to sex. We have become what C.S. Lewis feared: Men Without Chests.

  29. I would also note, this is why the #Free Kate mob has such a difficult time understanding what’s at stake. They may pay lip service to some vague concept of moral behavior, but that morality is focused only upon themselves and how it affects their ability to act upon their base instincts. There is no concept of effects on others or society as a whole. For that reason, they are intellectually incapable of understanding even the simplest rational arguments against the anarchy exemplified by the Hunt household. They truly see Kate as the “victim,” because in their minds, they indentify with her and her absence of a moral compass. They cannot identify with the actual victim or her parents, because they have no concept of responsiblity and self-control, whether as an individual or as parents rearing a child. Thus, they resort to F-Bombs, because their reality has no such concepts. It’s like trying to explain snow to a lost tribe along the Amazon.
