    Just received “Iron Coffins.” I ordered it as a companion to “Das Boot.” Interesting aside, “Das Boot” was ordered used through Amazon and came from the UK.

    “Das Boot” will have a place of honor next to “The Cruel Sea.”

    Still, Iron Coffins was a great book. Interesting to compare it to the memoirs of our submariners in the Pacific, who ran amok for most of the war (after they got the torpedoes to stop malfunctioning) because the IJN never bothered to train anti-sub warfare very much and didn’t get work on it the way the US and Royal Navies did.

    Did you ever read the story of the US submarine captain that took photos to prove US torpedoes weren’t working? That was a hair raising story in and of itself.

    I’m looking forward to “Iron Coffins.” Everything I’ve read about those old diesel WWII subs tells me they were not for the faint of heart. Of course, nothing about the front lines of WWII was for shrinking violets.
