Feminist Tumblr: It’s Not As If They Hate Men or Anything Like That

The fascinating thing about Feminist Tumblr is that it’s totally unfiltered. Nearly all of the participants are very young — a 25-year-old is a senior citizen on Tumblr — and also anonymous. There’s no adult supervision (your mother is not on Tumblr) and inside this feminist echo chamber, everything inside their zany brains comes pouring out. There is a constant competition on Feminist Tumblr to say the most demeaning things possible about males. Of course, no feminist ever says anything good about males, but the anti-male venom of Feminist Tumblr gives it a special edge.

“it’s so weird that women are seen as emotional and melodramatic when all the men i know are the most unbelievably melodramatic people on earth and also every time i express an emotion as a woman i feel guilty and apologize profusely but I’ve literally never once heard a man apologize for expressing an emotion even though they throw literal temper tantrums all the time”

This is the exact opposite of the usual feminist complaint about men who, allegedly, are emotionally stunted and incapable of anything like the intuitive and sympathetic feelings over which feminists claim women have a monopoly. However, you see here the damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t aspect of feminism. Everything that men do is wrong, and so men who do show emotion are condemned as “the most unbelievably melodramatic people on earth” in a post that got more than 6,000 notes in a month.

Who is the author of this screed? Hannah Beth, a 20-year-old Florida State University student who is “majoring in literature and double minoring in art history/german” and also “queer as hell.” When she’s not busy denouncing males for their emotional melodrama, Hannah Beth has some emotions of her own:

I feel like books are a giant blanket I am wrapping myself up in. every morning lately when I wake up the first thought I have is about whatever I was reading before I went to sleep. it’s good to be corny about books on the internet I think. it’s good to have something I love this much. anyway, I felt really anxious all day today and had one of those Bad Days For No Reason and I cried a little bit in my car and I was scared to sleep alone but now I am curled up at 1am with my tiny book and I feel like it is the most reassuring hug on earth, like 100 angels whispering “it’s okay and it’s always been okay and it always will be” which is true and very good to hear from the universe. I wanna write a love letter to literature tbh.

So, yeah, guys “throw literal temper tantrums,” and meanwhile Hannah Beth is crying in her car and scared to sleep alone.

Tumblr Feminists cry alone a lot, when they’re not busy plotting worldwide revolution, like 21-year-old Athena, a “Gemini bitch” from Sweden who describes herself as “stone cold lesbian, post-structuralist radical feminist, marxist communist” and also a bunny owner & advocate for proper animal care. So she loves bunnies, but hates men and capitalism, not necessarily in that order.

“I’m not interested in dedicating my feminist effort to making masculinity more comfortable for men, I could not care less; they created it, they uphold it, so they fix it. I’m not gonna wade through their toxic waste to try to awaken some core of softness and compassion in men. If men are supposedly as good at analysis and reflection as they like to claim then they can fix their own shit. Demanding that women use up our effort to do it for them in the name of feminism – a women’s movement – is just another facet of the same masculinity they supposedly disapprove of.”

We got your message, loud and clear. Got nearly 9,000 notes in three month for that. Cute selfies for a lesbian Marxist, though.

So “queer as hell” or “stone cold lesbian” — kind of a theme becomes apparent here. There may even be a pattern on Feminist Tumblr. Then there’s 24-year-old Jam, “bisexual and aromantic,” who is “half Jamaican half Finnish, first generation Canadian” and also — surprise! — has complaints about men:

“one part of the male gender role I can’t stand is thinking that being irritating and pissing women off is funny????
every man I’ve met thinks that’s hilarious and
gets mad when I’m not into it. like why did
no one teach them to shut the fuck up”

That got over 160,000 notes in five months, because Tumblr Feminists share a profound contempt for “the male gender role.”

Oh, and Jam also posts a lot of selfies. You might like her, if you’re into pierced noses and tattoos and know how to “shut the fuck up.”

Speaking of which, Kethrellan, 19, is studying Music Education and Voice at the University of Delaware and — thanks to a questionnaire she filled out — we know that she’s 5-foot-7, lost her virginity before she was 18, has never been in a serious relationship and is, of course, bisexual.

Question: Is bisexuality as common in real life as it is on Feminist Tumblr? Or is there just reflecting a trend among fashionable young people to identify as Something Other Than Normal? Then I remember — Feminism Is Queer!

The title of that 2010 textbook by a Women’s Studies professor summarizes the basic message of feminism in the 21st century.

Whatever she does, the Third Wave feminist cannot be normal, because being normal is oppressive. This came to mind particularly with Kethrellan because I was looking at her selfies — because posting selfies is why they invented the Internet, right? — and thinking “never been in a serious relationship”? Long curly hair, nice smile, wide-set eyes — not a Barbie doll-type beauty, but more like a pre-Raphaelite painting. Rosetti or Millais would have loved her, and yet Kethrellan has “never been in a serious relationship”? Maybe the Tumblr Feminists have got a point. Maybe young guys nowadays are just a bunch of clueless clowns. Maybe they lack a proper appreciation of beauty. And maybe that’s why Kethrellan wrote this on her Tumblr blog:

“overhearing straight boys talk about girls is so terrifying”

Seriously, what’s wrong with these guys? Did their mamas not raise them right? Were they dumped off in daycare when they were babies? Did they grow up without two loving parents? We they shuttled back and forth between their divorced parents or abused by stepparents? How is it that so many of these young men seem to be uncouth savages or feral beasts with no respect for women? It’s almost as if civilization is being destroyed, perhaps by a War Against Human Nature.

Somebody ought to write a book about this or something.

Jan can thank non-aromantics, who will actually settle down and send their genes into the future, for determining how men treat women. Because straight women don’t want wusses; if a man is afraid of womanfeelz, then God only knows how he’ll handle an actual crisis.

  2. Guys tease girls — wow, I’m shocked.

Have none of these girls ever seen “Gone With the Wind”? Rhett Butler knew how to flirt! That mixture of sarcasm and gallantry — chicks dig it.

Or at least, normal chicks do.

  3. And men tease men! I just did it to a friend today. It’s just something we do, and arguably kinder than the shit-testing of men and cutting down of women that women stereotypically do.

  4. It took my wife a while to get used to my teasing, but she quickly learned that teasing me back got positive results. She’s a much happier person now.

  5. I’ve come to the opinion that these people take to Tumblr because they flunked Onanism 101.

And BTW, the FSU literature major wouldn’t have lasted ten minutes in one of my graduate literature courses. For one thing, we all (including the professor) smoked like chimneys.

  6. And the more thoughtful of us try to make the teasing appropriate to the person we’re teasing … which, of course, means that we have to pay enough attention to them, sare enough about them, to know what is or is not right.
It’s kind of like buying a gift — you can buy a gift for some (generally manufactured) even, or you can buy a gift for a person.

  7. I am always conflicted by these type of stories. Sure these yahoos are self-centered buffoons terrified of even the slightest thing that might threaten the theological cocoon they have cooperatively created.

OTOH, anyone with a little knowledge and a will to do so could easily manipulate these fools for nefarious or even merely entertainment purposes.

  8. Holy crap, so true. I mean, that’s the point of God ordaining regular man/woman marriages, right? Somebody has to offset my womanfeelz with some not-womanfeelz, or it would be total chaos, right?

  9. I dig it! 😀 😀 😀

Wait…are you prepared to assert that I’m normal?

Hang on, let me grab Mr. DM to hear this. I need witnesses to this claim.

  10. What is it with these selfies? Is this the most narcissism you’ve ever seen, or what?

Rather than selfies, I’d rather have pictures I took of cool cars I saw. Or the picture of the truck with the giant spine in the back that I posted here the other day, ’cause damn.

What is it with the dozens and dozens of selfies, in every conceivable pose? How many duck faces can someone make? Is it me, or is this just weird? And I’m sorry, but Miss Jam’s lavender hair looks crocheted.

  11. My Mom taught me that when a guy teases me, it’s because he likes me. That’s like, the barometer. Along with if he calls you up just to talk to you for no apparent reason.

When both of those happen, you should go downtown and start looking at wedding dresses, I was told.

  12. overhearing straight boys talk about girls is so terrifying”

Seriously, what’s wrong with these guys?

It’s a perfect storm of technology, moral and familial collapse, and narcissistic hysteria.

Porn used to be – not that long ago – quite hard to find unless you were an adult specifically looking for dirty pictures. And society looked down on seedy guys with their wank mags and mucky videos. The sex shop was a subject of ribald adult humour. Nobody you knew would admit to owning a vibrator. Only edgy New York comediennes talked like that.

Now? Porn is everywhere and kids are watching it on their phones and tablets. Ostensibly grown men and women talk openly about “sex toys”. The culture has been coarsened, and amazingly quickly.

Modern boys are clueless in talking to women. Young men have always tended to be awkward around the opposite sex, but it’s worse now. A lot of them are from fatherless homes and grew up with no good male mentors.

There’s a tendency for young men now to go to either extreme – the pussified white knight male feminist, hoping if he nods respectfully enough, he’ll get laid. Or the dudebro, whose attitudes toward “bitches n hoes” is an unwitting parody of masculinity. Neither type knows any better, because they’re young and because they haven’t been taught to be men.

Here’s the thing though: women are the gatekeepers of sex. They choose which male behaviours to reward. And more often than not, they reward the loud, crude, seemingly confident young men who embody the “misogynist” archetype.

That’s why there seem to be more of them. It’s supply and demand in action.

  13. Kethrellan, 19, is studying Music Education and Voice at the University of Delaware and

I think she must have transferred from Amherst College and also put in some time at this institution:

Here’s a hypothesis: she’s borderline patrician and for that reason has been more insulated from practical life than someone from a less tony background. Astute patricians are very particular about grounding their children in various ways (and explaining things to them) and imparting to them tools for everyday living, because those things emerge less spontaneously when the budget constraints are not there. Her mother and father were less astute or effective, so she’s off into orbit. It also appears she has no brothers and attended a girls school. That young men are more foreign to her than they are to others is perhaps not surprising.

  14. “Porn used to be – not that long ago – quite hard to find unless you were an adult specifically looking for dirty pictures”

Those respectable suburbanites wanted their porn outlets — just not in *their* neighborhoods, where *their* kids would be propositioned by the pervs — so they put them in mine. ‘Cause, after all, the children of poor people don’t matter so much.

  15. There’s a tendency for young men now to go to either extreme – the
pussified white knight male feminist, hoping if he nods respectfully
    enough, he’ll get laid.

My guess would be that the first type is as a share of the whole in the low single digits and the second perhaps a quarter of the whole. Most young men strike me as having normal manners. There’s an excess of informality these days and a quick resort to blue language in mixed company that you never saw among my father’s contemporaries. You see that among young men and women. Also, sexual mores are astonishingly sleazoid (though this is perhaps overstated) and there is now a subset very resistant to marriage. I have one such specimen among my proximate relations. He’s 36, unmarried and childless. The women in his life come and go.

  16. If you say so. I grew up in a town with over 500,000 people in it. The troublesome neighborhoods amount to less than 20% of the total and the true slums 10%. There is not much commercial enterprise of any description in the slums – a barricaded gas station, perhaps, or a dirty shebeen, or some warehouse or small manufactory on the fringe of it. In the southeast quadrant, which was the most populous but had no slums, I recall one ‘adult book store’. It was nestled in and among storefronts with a variety of enterprises.

  17. The Other McCain: fighting feminism with the male gaze.

I truly appreciated this visually insightful post 🙂

  18. You’re probably talking about recently. I’m talking about 50 years ago, when “adult” “bookstores” first began to be opened right out where the pervs didn’t have to got out of their way to get it.

These days, besides porn being just a decision away on the internet — and, indeed, beamed into your house via TV — the “brick-and-mortar” porn outlets can be found in even the respectable sides of town.

These days, I live in a city of 50k, and there are two (that I know of). The newer one is out by the interstate — where the respectable suburbanites live. The first is in the old “Miracle Mile”, which is also a respectable part of town — and it’s there because the bitchy Democrat city law director (who then skipped town a couple of years later) didn’t really oppose it; so, therefore, the mock trial to determine whether our “community standards” allowed porn shops was rigged from the start to “find” that we were cool with it.

  19. You’re probably talking about recently.

No, I’m not. I’m talking about the situation as best I can recall, which extends to the bloc of years when I was an inner city resident, so 25 years ago, give or take. I can recall back nearly 50 but was not moving about as much outside the exurb I was living in at the time.

If I were talking recently, I’d point out the one adult book store I can recall in greater Syracuse. It’s on franchise freeway in DeWitt, NY, off one of the service roads. Karen Beseth (“Lonely Conservative”) knows the place I’m talking about. That’s a suburban strip like any other.

  20. Wow! I really feel bad for young men if this what the future for women is. The species is damned, but before we go feminists are going to pay.

  21. You might like her, if you’re into pierced noses and tattoos and know how to “shut the fuck up.”

As luck would have it, I have a pierced nose, tattoos, and am the strong, silent type. As a bonus, I am also of Finnish ancestry. She’s cute; would bang.

  22. Here’s the thing though: women are the gatekeepers of sex. They choose which male behaviours to reward. And more often than not, they reward the loud, crude, seemingly confident young men who embody the “misogynist” archetype.

There are entire web communities devoted to teaching nice guys how to turn women on with rudeness, because niceness doesn’t work.

  23. Here is what I don’t understand. These feminists(and leftists in general) wail constantly about social justice, but how come I never see any of them down in the parts of town where I live? Why are they always segregated away in big campuses or walled communities? They make all these rules and regulations in the name of the working classes and poor. For instance.. do they really believe that “yes means yes” means anything in a working class bar at 1am? Don’t they understand that for the most part, this cultural revolution they are creating only exists within the upper middle class and above?

  24. Historical note: LUGs existed long before Tumblr. You just didn’t hear about them if you weren’t around college campuses.

  25. Feminists are so cute when they expound on how they’re going to take over the world and overthrow the patriarchy and stop war while meanwhile in their daily lives they can’t keep from being upset because someone said something hurtful or sexist or some movie or book doesn’t treat women with all the respect these special snowflakes know they deserve.

How do they think they will stop V. Putin when he decides he’s going to take a trip to Germany via the Fulda Gap with a brigade or three of Russian Armata t-14 tanks?

Somehow I don’t believe that waving rainbow flags and scrawling slogans on your bare upper chest and screaming hysterical will do much good. (except to give Vlad a good laugh as he turns them all into instant Rachel Coreys)

Their parents need to be horsewhipped.

  26. I hate you cause I’m scared I have real feminine desires?

Yeah, A lot of them seem to be in the “protest too much” category. Especially at some of the marches.

Exactly who were they getting dressed up for?
