Gunman Kills 10 in Shooting Spree at Community College in Oregon

A gunman has reportedly killed 10 people and wounded at least 20 more on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

UPDATE 3:05 p.m. ET: According to KOMO-TV in Seattle, the shooting began at Snyder Hall on the UCC campus. The number of killed and wounded is not yet certain. It has been reported that police have either killed or arrested the gunman.

UPDATE 4:10 p.m. ET: The shooting began about 10:30 a.m. local time (1:30 p.m. ET), and NBC News reports that Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum confirms 13 fatalities in the incident. The gunman is reportedly dead. More reporting at CNN and KOIN-TV in Portland.

UPDATE 4:55 p.m. ET: The sheriff just held a press conference describing the police response to the shooting. The Oregonian reports emergency dispatch communications:

From the 911 dispatch, seven minutes after the initial call: “Code 4, suspect is down.” At eight minutes after the call, “He’s not breathing, is in Snyder Hall.” At nine minutes after the call, “Suspect is down, we’ve got multiple gunshot wounds were going to need multiple ambulances on scene.”

So the incident ended within 10 minutes of the first report to 911. The deceased shooter, reportedly a 20-year-old male, has not yet been identified and his motive is unknown.

UPDATE 6:50 p.m. ET: The latest:

UPDATE 10:45 p.m. ET: The death toll has been changed to 10.

    A news outlet had a source that says he asked people to state their religion before shooting them. An unconfirmed source is putting out there that he targeted Christians. It’s interesting they aren’t putting his name out there yet, even though he’s been identified as a “20 year old male.” If they know his age, hey know his name. For what reason does the media withhold a murderers name?

    Although even if it wasn’t a jihadi, if the targeting Christians stuff is true, this story will conveniently dim from the spotlight.

    Let’s wait until we KNOW FACTS. These “initial reports” in such incidents are always uncertain, and I don’t want to promote any falsehoods.

    Without knowing anything about the shooter or their motives, let me just say in no uncertain terms he was a piece of excrement, and whatever cause (beyond insanity) he was espousing was also crap.

    Sympathies to the families and friends of those lost and I would say Im quite impressed at the response time, 7 minutes from call to suspect down is pretty darn good.

    There is some suggestion that he did it because “it was the only way he would ever get his name in the news” or something like that. If true, I guess that’s one reason not to identify him.

    It is being reported by survivors that he asked them to stand and state their religion. If they said Christian, they were shot in the head. If the said some other religion or none, they were shot in the head. Notice they aren’t releasing the name of the shooter. Perhaps his name is Mohamed?
