    Seriously, though, if we make parenting harder (e.g. enforced breast-feeding, Mozart-playing, and, in Illinois, a law against leaving your 13-year-old child home alone), then more parents are going to kill their babies, rather than be “unfit mothers”.

    Also, on a side note, I was not breast-fed, which was pretty common in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Now, I’m just waiting for evidence that we’re all maladjusted intellectual midgets, but I suspect (for several reasons) that such evidence is not and never will be forthcoming.
