But you know what I do remember?
YOU were there. YOU, with your enormous video cameras. YOU, with your microphones poking into the bubble of grief that grew bigger as we waited for our parents to find us. YOU, with your horrible questions about what had happened, had we known Mike, had we seen anything? No parents there yet, just children. No teachers, just children. And you.
Some of us screamed at you to leave us alone. Some of us answered your sick questions, because you were the grown-ups, and we were the kids. I don’t even know how you got there so fast, before our parents, before anyone else could swoop us back inside and ask you to leave. But there you were, with your vans and your lights, asking us how it felt to know that another child had been killed. How it felt to be scared. How it felt to wonder about the names of everyone else, to be desperately hoping for more information, while feeling terrified about what the truth would really be.
I remember you. I remember your names. I remember what channel you were from. I remember that you filled the parking lot at Mike’s funeral. You stood in a line outside of the door, devouring the footage of crying football players running away from the service, like rabid hungry wolves. You replayed the video of Mike being loaded into the ambulance, over and over and over again, even when people wrote to you and asked you to stop.

In defense of the Death Porn Media, if we don’t cram some sand in everyone, the seed pearls of the next atrocity may not be sufficient. Picking up the pieces may be hard, but fomenting the next round is harder still.

The media always gets a pass, unless they form a heavy metal band, which can bring them under attack for inciting violence. Rap music still gets the raaaaacist pass, however.

Sad to say, but I expect this of the media, even while I hate it. Someone must stand on the battlefield armed with only a camera. The opposite of that noble pose is that someone must stand on the doorstep and ask the awful, personal, and insulting questions.

Unfortunately few learn how to do it with any finesse or dignity.

But far worse to me are the ones who use these tragedies as a dungheap upon which they crawl upon, so that they may incite further limits on liberty.

A fellow Moron at the AoSHQ (“RWC”) came up with the term, blood dancing to describe these monstrous egos and their constant warfare on human life, liberty, and dignity.

Spread the term. They earned it.

I wrote this about the media yesterday:

The news media, as is usually the case, was utterly deplorable. I suppose I should thank them for that. Being able to be angry at them helped diffuse some of the anguish. Aside from the endless incorrect speculation and reporting of rumors, I heard numerous reporters from a number of different outlets commenting that they were being “kept far away” from the fire station next to the school where the parents of the victims were. If they truly had to be kept away from parents who just learned that their kindergarten child had been murdered, if their impulse was truly to put a camera and a microphone in the face of these people at that moment then they are as inhuman as the gunman lying dead in that school.

“Death porn media” is a good name for it. Some wounds never heal. Back in May of 1975, I was just a couple weeks from graduating high school. My best friend’s older sister committed suicide. She was a beautiful young woman (mother of 3 little girls) who got herself into a situation that she couldn’t handle. I’d known and liked her for years. Suddenly, her family was thrown into grief and the rest of us were in a state of shock. Somehow, some scumbag reporter got his hands on Pam’s suicide note and published it. The article was picked up by the AP and ran in newspapers across the country. Her family – already devastated – received hate mail. To that scumbag reporter, the suicide note was “news”. He didn’t give a damn about the harm he did to her memory or her family. To him, it was just a scoop. To this day, if I could find him, I’d want to thrash him to within an inch of his life. There’s no forgiving or forgetting something so brazenly hateful as what he did that day.

The media teach the shooters the ‘script’ on how to do it, and provide rewards of worldwide name recognition. If they treated these the way they treat copycat suicides, the problem would go away. Also, notice when these shootings started – AFTER the 1960s assassinations created a partnership between the media and anti-gun activists.

I left a comment at the other blog, but will summarize here: get in their faces, yell at them, make it so they can’t film their report. It’s high time that we remind them of how decent people behave.

And by the way, I ran across one website, covering a report that the Newtown killer had posted on 4chan before he committed the crime. He posted using a picture of the two Columbine killers, lying dead. I don’t remember seeing that picture posted anywhere. What a horrific image for the Kiebold and Harris families to stumble across. It wasn’t necessary to the story and should have been blanked out.

Just as I expect reporters to stand in the middle of every hurricane, I can rely on all news outlet to stalk the remnants of every tragedy. As people call for a mandatory waiting period for gun purchases, I’d like a mandatory waiting period for pundits to opine on our culture and norms in the wake of catastrophes; this Attention Death Disorder ruined my weekend (apologies to those who know victims).

Nonsense. Think of all the stories — usually those negative to a particular political party, or overly positive to the other one — that mass media has refused to cover.

Was it news when John Edwards, a candidate for the Presidency, was caught cheating on his terminally-ill wife? Absolutely. But although “the watchers” would have “lap[ped] it up”, the news media had their reasons for ignoring it. (Contrariwise, a completely fabricated rumor of infidelity by Jon McCain, at the height of his Presidential bid, got plenty of coverage.)

Choose your own more recent examples. My point is, reporters could once use the lame excuse that they reported damaging stories because The Peepul wanted to see them. But now they openly ignore stories that are legitimate news.

We once had journalists with integrity. Perhaps we still do, but they’re drowned out by their unscrupulous colleagues.
